Back when Frank Goodman founded Valley he probably didn’t envisage how much it would become entwined with the history of sea kayaking as a sport. In 1972 when the Anas Acuta, was launched, Valley became one of the very first

companies producing a specialist sea kayak. Although kayaking on the sea can be traced back several thousand years through various cultures it was these fibreglass sea kayaks that led to the activity gaining popularity as a pastime.

As demands changed, so the materials used have been forced to progress, from those first glass-fiber kayaks. Improvements in the reinforcements and resins have led to much tougher, lighter products. Glass-fibers are now only one of several reinforcements used: E Glass cloth, polyester Diolen, Kevlar and Carbon fibers all improve the performance of the laminate when used correctly. The biggest improvements however have been in the resin matrices, polyester resins are

now significantly tougher and vinylesters and epoxies now offer even greater performance.

Valley has also been instrumental in many features that are now taken for granted in modern sea kayaks. Respect for the sea brought the need to develop safer kayaks. Valley were the first to develop a watertight hatch system specifically for

kayaks and introduced recessed deck fittings to ensure safety lines remained in place. It is testimony to the value of these innovations that many competitors still purchase these products directly from Valley for use on their own designs.

It is hard to write about Valley’s history, without seeming to boast, such is the influence on modern sea kayak development. Although it can be seen as “just” history, it should be considered that Valley is where it is today because of the journey it has taken. This is certainly true and this year, like those before sees yet more new developments at Valley.

About Valley Sea kayaks

Polyethylene

Valley have always been at the forefront of modern sea kayak construction. The realization of the Skerray RM was the breakthrough into roto-moulding sea kayaks, heralding a new era. The progression has continued with the development of welded bulkhead construction, triple layer moulding to increase the stiffness and feel of the kayak and the use of moulded

inserts to accept the recessed deck fittings as used in the composite kayaks. All of these features (standard in a Valley kayak) are now benchmarks by which others are judged.

Composite

Standard glass / Diolen construction.

Valleys standard composite construction utilizes only the best grades of resin and reinforcement materials, with each kayak manufactured by employees with many years experience. Of the glass reinforcement materials, both mat and cloth are used, mat because of its superior inter-layer adhesion when using polyester resin and cloth to increase the strength to weight ratio. Each hull features two full cloth layers (one glass & one diolen) inter-spaced with the lightest commercially available mat and specific reinforcement in high stress areas. Decks feature a very similar construction, although slightly

lighter in weight. High quality marine grade polyester resin is used throughout. As in all Valley composite kayaks, our high quality standard construction features moulded inserts for all deck fittings (to reduce the number of holes drilled

through the shell) and a tape reinforced outside seam.

Vacuum Infused Carbon Kevlar construction

We are constantly assessing the quality of constructions available in composite kayaks. Our Vacuum Infused construction uses carbon kevlar layers plus specific reinforcements in key areas of both the deck and hull to offer a premium

construction, but at a very competitive price. Vacuum-Resin-Infusion is an aerospace-developed process and is only used by a handful of companies. It greatly improves the quality and strength of the laminate and leads to a significant

reduction in weight. Valley (to our knowledge) remains the only British sea kayak company using this technology in their hulls. Achieving an optimum ratio of reinforcement to resin is the key to strength and durability and using this process,

Valley can now consistently get ratios of below 0.7:1 and believe this, combined with higher-end reinforcements, creates the best sea kayaks they have ever made. Typical weight saving over the standard diolen construction is approximately

15%.

Valley has a long history of producing expedition capable sea kayaks. In fact, arguably, they started this trend by designing the Nordkapp back in 1974. Whilst the Nordkapp has evolved and retains a valuable place in the Valley range, it

was decided in 2011 that a new flagship was required for the Valley range.

The Etain is a conscious departure from previous Valley designs. Valley kayaks were traditionally more “fish-form” i.e. widest point slightly forward of centre. The Etain is more neutral, in fact very slightly Swede form i.e. widest point rear of

centre. Swede form kayaks have a different feel, slightly more glide and a perception of speed that is more noticeable because you are now paddling in a narrower part of the boat. The paddling stroke is also less encumbered and

there is a general feeling of having less boat between you and the water. Better…NO, different… YES!

Other features are a hull that has a shallow to moderate ‘V’ in cross-section for good initial stability and rocker, that would best be describe as moderate i.e. slightly less than some older Valley boats to provide secure tracking but still enough to

provide a lively ride.

The Etain also features a removable deck-pod storage-unit in front of the cockpit. Whilst holding the same as a regular 4th hatch/compartment, the advantage is, it can be taken up the beach (or into the car/house) with you. The deck-pod is ideal for things like valuables, snacks, car keys, and small items of safety-kit that you might always want close to hand*. Other features of the Etain include a locking point situated behind the cockpit and special attention given to cockpit ergonomics.

The Etain is designed to appeal to paddlers looking for an expedition style boat with a contemporary feel. Arguably the Etain should appeal to those who are already familiar with the performance of a Valley kayak but also to those who have

previously not been a fan of Valley’s traditional style!

* Any items that are susceptible to water-damage should always be additionally protected by the use of dry-bags or other suitable packaging, we’d recommend doing this, no matter how dry your compartment usually seems!

• Continuing with Valley expedition pedigree • Fantastic open water handling• Designed for all day paddling comfort• The perfect balance of speed, tracking and

manoeuvrability in class

Over recent years the Avocet has become quite the celebrity, with star performances, in the tidal-race scenes of Justine’s “This is The Sea” series of inspirational films. Ironically the same characteristics that shine though in

these films make the Avocet ideally suited to less experienced paddlers and for use in less demanding conditions.

The sixteen-foot hull is one of the fastest in its class but as the saying goes, “speed is nothing without control”. In the Avocet’s case, control coming via a design that responds predictably to edging and gives a

stability profile that allows even newer paddlers to exploit this.

Although not conceived as a long-range expedition kayak, the Avocet is not limited to mere day-boat duties, it being more than capable of multi-day adventures, the hull speed again being of benefit, allowing an Avocet

paddler to keep pace in any group, good seat ergonomics provide all day comfort and the predictable handling easily absorbs variations in load.

The Avocet is truly a kayak to enjoy at any level of ability and one that your skills will never outgrow. The Avocet is probably the best handling sixteen-foot sea kayak currently on the market, so bring on the

weekend!

• The benchmark 16ft (sub 5 meter) Sea Kayak• Handling characteristics that suit advance and

Gemini st (Sports Tourer)

Gemini ST (Sports Tourer) 14’-10” x 21.75” 37.5lbs* At 37.5lbs (17kg) the first thing you’ll notice about the ST is how light and easy it is to handle. Whether carrying the kayak on your shoulder or loading it on your car, it takes the chore out of getting to the water. On the water it handles like a longer kayak; moderately rockered, good stability, long waterline and a fine bow ensure the ST tracks well and gives it a touring speed better than many longer kayaks.* Weight quoted is for a standard kayak with no optional extras, weight excludes hatch covers and given the nature of hand made products is only accurate to + or – 1kg (2.2lbs)

The Twins, Which One is Yours!

Conventional wisdom previously dictated that proper sea kayaks needed to be a minimum of 16ft long. Short boats used to be considered too slow or too difficult to paddle in challenging conditions. For Valley the decision to develop a proper sub-16ft kayak was further complicated by the spectrum of reasons a paddler might seek-out a shorter model.

On the one hand you have those seeking something that handles like a longer boat; i.e. that prioritises trackingand speed but who might be hoping that a shorter kayak will be significantly lighter and easier to manage off the water.

At the other extreme you have those willing to sacrifice some speed and tracking if it makes the kayak more fun in surf-zones, tideraces and rock-hopping; basically when ‘playing the sea’, a descriptive phrase that probably says it all!

Unfortunately, focus on one and you invariably compromise the other, there is no perfect all-rounder! Valley’s response: ‘Project Gemini’, the twins!

Imagine starting with a strong foundation by creating a base core DNA, a mid-point design that could then be tuned in one direction to create the perfect touring model and in the other to create a play version. Couple this unique design approach with cutting-edge infused composite constructions and you suddenly have the most exciting development to hit sea-kayaking in recent years.

Of course you can still play in the touring version and tour in the play one because they share the same core DNA. So yes, there is plenty of overlap, but the further you get to the ends of that use-spectrum, the more you’ll benefit from the ‘specialist’ and the more you’ll enjoy your paddling in the ‘right’ kayak.

Gemini Sp (Sports Play)

• Class-leading ocean-play sea kayak• Unparalleled rough water handling• Class-leading vacuum infused construction• Despite specialist nature, the SP maintains speed and tracking

Gemini SP (Sports Play) 14’-10” x 22” 40lbs*The SP’s increased rocker, greater bow volume, harder chines, and flatter mid-hull cross-section, all contribute to its performance in the rough. It’sextremely nimble, surfs exceedingly well, and avoids pearling. Produced in a stronger Lay-up, the SP provides everything you’d expect from a true ocean going play-boat.* Weight quoted is for a standard kayak with no optional extras, weight excludes hatch covers and given the nature of hand made products is only accurate to + or – 1kg (2.2lbs)

The most popular option for most paddlers, we use a 2” (50mm) wide tape and resin reinforcement down the centre of the hull. The strip can be colour matched to the hull or trim colour of your kayak, or left clear with

a Kevlar tape to show off the woven fibre.

There are normally three reasons for choosing a customised bulkhead position: fitting a footpump requires a custom bulkhead (included in the price) so as to make the pump effective, maximisation of internal space

in the front hatch, or the use of a full foam bulkhead as a footrest instead of the traditional adjustable footrests. When ordering it is important you specify your reason for choosing this option, and whether you also wish

to retain the standard footrests. In order to accurately fit a custom bulkhead we will also require your inside leg measurement in your

regular paddling foot wear (crotch to floor, which is slightly longer than your normal trouser measurement). The bulkhead will then be fitted with

approximately 1” (25mm) of safety margin.

Valley offers two options for a pump – a Compac 50 foredeck mounted pump, or the most popular now being the Henderson foot pump fitted

to a customised bulkhead. This option does have the benefit of allowing hands-free operation, although you have to be seated in the kayak in

order to pump. Deck pumps can, conversely be used before a re-entry, and allow a little more freedom of movement internally. Both have their

own advantages with choice usually being influenced by personal experience.

Most Valley sea kayaks can be fitted with a deck-mounted compass. On most models it is usually fitted just forward of the front hatch, although

on some Classic models it will be just forward of the chart elastics. Standard fitment is a Silva 70P. Even in the GPS era, a compass can be

fun to navigate by, or invaluable backup in the event of any technological problems.

Valley has been involved in surf kayaking since the infancy of the sport, with kayaks like the Moccasin, one of the first true high performance surf kayaks. This boat was a watershed-design and when launched in the early 70’s it quickly

spawned a string of me-too products from Valley’s competitors. Surf-Kayaking as a sport quickly took off with regular, fiercely contested competitions. Meanwhile the manufactures engaged in an arms race striving to produce, faster, shorter,

more manoeuvrable kayaks. Valley Surf Kayak always played a lead role in this development. After several fantastic years of frenzied development and fierce competition the sport was split with the introduction of the waveski, ultimately many paddlers of the day made the switch causing surf-kayaking as a sport to suffer as number dwindled. Initially, like

many manufactures, Valley were also involved in the waveski market but at heart, they were kayakers so gradually pulled back from that market. Fast forward to about 6 years ago and spurred on by a resurgent surf kayaking scene, Valley Surf Kayaks decided to re-enter the fray. Within 12 months Valley’s new high performance kayak. The Rush had taken Gold

at the surf-kayak world-championships. Since then Valley Surf Kayak’s have won events across the globe. You could say they’ve merely picking up where they left off!

With the taste of success, Valley launched their first International class surf kayak. The Nemesis. All their knowledge has been piled into this kayak creating the most up to date and hardcore IC surf kayak on the market. Complying fully to the

new ICF rules that now allow more radical hull-forms it features a unique V into double concave hull and razor sharp rails, the Nemesis is a real charger and is the only ICF boat that can behave like a HP boat when on the wave!

After several successful years with the original Rush, Valley has decided to move the goalpost still-further and unveil the future of the HP Class. This MK 2 version takes what was already a leading design and makes it truly cutting edge. Features softer rails towards the bow making it easier to land those aerial moves and having more V toward the tail its

rail-to-rail response has been improved. These and other subtle changes ensure the Rush maintains its position as the top choice of high-performance design!

Valley’s market leading asset has always been its design team, having a over 80 years of paddle-sport experience between them still today this isn’t enough, Valley knows that the real asset is you guys, the paddlers!

About Valley Surf Kayaks

Page 22: Valley Sea Kayak WorkBook 2013

• Longer V on the Hull• Softer front rails for forgiving landings• Excellent volume distribution• Sharper rear rails for execlent hold• Slightly more rocker for excellent manoeuvrability

The Rush MK2 was the next progression of the Rush family. By capturing the speed of the original Rush and the maneuverability on the Rush 7-2, the Rush MK2 is the ultimate HP surf kayak. The Rush MK2 also features softer front

rails for more forgiving landings from aerials. Another developed for the Rush MK2 was a longer V on the hull to maximize tracking down the line.

Continuing with the success of the original Rush, the MK2 has not disappointed, gaining medals at the major competitions since its launch. The Rush MK2 is surely the boat to achieve great things in.

The Rush+ was developed from the original Rush, for the bigger paddlers. If speed, hold and drive is what your after in a surf kayak then the Rush + is the boat for you. Designed for the bigger paddler in mind, the Rush+ has ample leg room.

The world of international class (IC) surf kayaks has taken a massive leap forward in recent years. The most radical development of these surf kayaks has been Valley’s IC boat the Nemesis. With the IC surf kayaks not being able to run fins, this has made the ride of most being more of a slip slider than line holder. The Nemesis is one of the most radical IC surf kayaks available with the unique dual concaved hull and razor sharp edges within the tail. These features mean that the Nemesis is an absolute charger down the line with high levels of

grip and hold never seen before in IC surf kayaks. Great success has been achieved in international competitions with the Nemesis, with medals at every international competition since its launch.

• Daul concaved hull• Sharp rear rails for execlent hold• Soft front rails for forgiving landings • Deck ridge for more impact restiances • Amazing levels of grip and drive out of bottom turns

construction, because of this it is every bit as durable as the slightly heavier Std-Kevlar and Pro-Kevlar versions.

Std-Kevlar

A fantastically robust all round construction, featuring a Vacuum-bagged Kevlar/Carbon hull, with a foam-core for competitionlevelsofrigidityandaglassanddiolendeck,reinforcedincriticalareaswithuni-directionalCarbonfibre.

Pro-Kevlar

A great high performance construction, featuring a lighter Vacuum-bagged foam-cored Kevlar/Carbon hull and a lighter multi-layer Kevlar/Carbon deck.
