Quality by ResearchVALO: Always in the Lead Since the very beginning in the early 60s of the last century, VALO has been driv-en by research. Focussing first on tech-nical solutions for biosecurity, customer and quality related projects later be-came more important. Today, it is well known that VALO SPF Eggs are not only safe, but give the best value for money on the world market.
Safety FirstResearch on biosecurity at VALO is based on safety of processes and sen-sitive testing methods. Most important, however, is the implementation of ro-bust production processes since test- ing results can only indicate deficits in these processes. Milestones in research at VALO have been: FAPP Ventilation, CAV-Eradication, Heat Treatment of
Feed, Formaldehyde Free DisinfectionProcesses for Eggs and Equipment.
Advantage by Genetic ProgressVALO is the only SPF Egg producer world- wide with direct access to a sophisticat-ed breeding program for commercially successful laying hens. By importing highly selected stock from the com-mercial segment, VALO is able to run a permanent upgrading program for the SPF flocks. After 3 generations of testing, these new elite birds are the base for future production flocks. Current gene-tic research is focusing on important traits for the vaccine industry like p27 eradication and yield improvement.

Quality Control and DisinfectionQuality Control by the CustomerWhen the eggs arrive, they should be visually checked for damages and cleanliness. Although all eggs are controlled intensively at VALO before shipping, there might have been some rough handling during transport. This may not only cause shell breakage, but can also be the reason for soiling due to leaking eggs. All eggs with defective and dirty shells must be removed be-fore using the other eggs to prevent contamination of the final product.
DisinfectionIntact and clean eggs should be dis-infected before used. All VALO eggs are disinfected twice before shipping. However, during transport and handlingthe eggs could have been recontami-nated.
VALO has developed several proven processes for the disinfection of eggs. For all these processes like dipping, spraying or fumigation the appropriate disinfectant must be selected. The most effective substances are peracetic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Alternatively, products based on quarternary ammo-nia may be used.
All effective disinfectants contain haz-ardous substances. Please make sure that the necessary protective measure-ments are taken when handling disin-fectants.

Global Network for Worlwide SupplyMastering the ChallengesWe are all operating in a globalised en-vironment. Transfer of information is just a matter of seconds via the global net-work system. However, not only informa-tion is finding its way quickly around the world, but diseases are also spreadingmore rapidly due to the increasing inter-national travel activities and exchange of goods. This creates new challenges for the supply of SPF Eggs, too. All VALO flocks are indeed well protected from infections, but transport and import restrictions may affect the availability of VALO SPF Eggs for certain customers in times of outbreaks of notifiable diseases in commercial flocks.

mented a global network of productionunits. This strategic positioning under-lines the efforts of VALO to be a reli-able partner for the Vaccine Industry and Research Institutions, not only in good times, but also under difficult conditions.
SPF Eggs: Not an Ordinary ProductThe SPF Egg is a unique product in terms of cleanliness and safety. However, this is not always reflected by the treatment by the authorities. VALO is working ac-tively to open the trade for SPF Eggs in the event of trade and transport re-strictions for other hatching eggs. In co-operation with VALO customers first promising results have already been achieved. In combination with the pro-duction network this is a milestone for the worldwide supply of high quality SPF Eggs, not only for VALO customers, but also for the entire poultry industry.

Germany Located in an isolated rural area near the North Sea, VALO started the pro-duction of SPF Eggs in 1968. Today, the German production facility consists of 3 farm complexes near Cuxhaven, 2 pro-duction and 1 rearing unit near Lam-stedt and 2 production units near Dams-dorf in Brandenburg. All SPF Eggs which are produced in Germany, are graded and packed in a central station near Cuxhaven. Feed is supplied from a ded-icated feed mill with state of the art heat treatment for decontamination. Near Damsdorf, VALO uses the former SPF Research station from the Humboldt University for its own research and selec-tion program.
United States of AmericaHy Vac, the Des Moines based SPF Egg producer, was founded in 1986. First fo-cussing on the domestic market for SPF
Eggs, Hy Vac is now fully integrated into the VALO marketing network. Production farms are located near Redfield and Adel in Iowa where the eggs are also graded and packed for shipping. Since Hy Vac is using the same genetic lines as VALO and standards for production are coordinated from Germany, VALO and Hy Vac SPF Eggs are of identical quality.
SpainIn 2005, VALO España was established as a joint venture between a Spanish partner and VALO. The 2 production sites and 1 rearing unit are located in Alba de Tormes near Salamanca. Most of the SPF Eggs produced are sold as preincubated eggs to the Vaccine In-dustry in Spain.
