“Ik kreeg de kans om me volledig uit te leven bij een startup rond zonne-energie in Senegal. Handelsingenieur wordt algemeen gezien als een brede studie, maar geen enkel boek kan je voorbereiden op de vrijheden en verantwoordelijkheden van zo’n taak! Van het schrijven van een businessplan voor investeerders tot het afleggen van interviews voor een lokale manager; van bureaus afschuimen in de douane van Dakar tot couscous eten met onze allereerste klant in de Senegalese broes: there’s nothing quite like it! Bovendien heb ik als Finance major best wat kennis in de praktijk kunnen uittesten: kostprijsberekening, budgettering, cash flow planning, … met daarna een crowdfundingactie om het geld binnen te halen. Het is enorm leuk om eens te zien wat je met al die kennis kan bereiken in onze grote wereld!”

“I got the chance to completely indulge myself in a solar energy start-up in Senegal. Business engineering is commonly perceived as a broad study, but nothing can prepare you for such an experience. Writing a business plan for investors, taking interviews for a local manager, talking our way through customs and eating couscous with our very first client: there’s nothing quite like it! On top of that, as a finance major, I got the opportunity to put my knowledge into practice: cost calculation, budgetting, cash flow planning and even a crowd-funding action to raise funds. It’s extremely interesting to see where your knowledge can bring you in this increasingly globalized world.”

“Mijn AFS-ervaring in Latijns-Amerika enkele jaren geleden was fantastisch, maar het deed me ook met eigen ogen zien dat er op sociaal gebied nog heel wat verandering nodig is in het Zuiden. De kans om sociale impact te hebben in het Zuiden,met de kennis die ik in mijn bachelor Handelsingenieur verworven heb wou ik dan ook met beide handen grijpen. Het AFD-project brengt mijn passie voor Latijns-Amerika samen met de behoefte om iets te veranderen in de zuidelijke helft van onze wereldbol en met mijn ambitie om beter voorbereid te zijn op een intrede op de arbeidsmarkt.”

“My AFS-experience in Latin America a few years ago, was fantastic. It showed me that there was still a lot of work necessary in the field of social development. Through my knowledge as a Business Engineer, I was sure I could have a lot of social impact.

My passion for Latin America, my ambition to be prepared for the labour market and the need to make a change in the Southern part of the world were brought together by my AFD-project.”

“De veelzijdigheid van het project en de eigenheid van een onbekend rechtssysteem in het Zuiden maken dat je in de praktijk zeer creatief leert omgaan met het recht. De kritische ingesteldheid en realiteitszin die je meekrijgt als rechtenstudent zijn zeer waardevolle troeven in elk AFD-project om de gesmede plannen in juridisch correcte en werkbare banen te leiden. Concreet stond ik als rechtenstudent in voor het opzetten van een duurzame en logische vennootschapsstructuur, het opstellen van allerhande overeenkomsten en het juridisch inschatten van de haalbaarheid van vooropgestelde doelen. De multidisciplinariteit van het team werkt zeer verrijkend. Het constant uitwisselen van kennis door studenten met een totaal verschillende achtergrond zorgt voor een onverwacht vlotte symbiose. Het gaf enorm veel voldoening om te zien wat je als groepje studenten teweeg kan brengen. Met eigen ogen de impact van je inspanningen zien en beseffen dat je iets duurzaam achterlaat na je vertrek was het culminatiepunt van een ongelooflijk boeiend jaar!”

“The diversity of the project and the individuality of an unknown legal system in the South encourage you to work creatively with the law. The critical attitude and sense of reality cultivated by a law education are important advantages for any AFD-project to guide the preparations towards a legally correct and successful end. To specify, I was responsible for establishing a durable and logical company structure, drafting several agreements and assessing the legal feasibility of the preconceived goals.

The multidisciplinary composition of the team is very enriching. The constant exchange of knowledge by students from a completely different background created an unexpectedly fluent symbiosis. It was very satisfying to behold what a group of students can accomplish. To see with your own eyes the impact of your efforts and to realise its durability was the culmination of an immensely fascinating year!”

“Als toekomstig arts is het belangrijk dat je naast medische kennis en vaardigheden heel wat andere zaken onder de knie krijgt. Samenwerking, goede communicatie, professionaliteit en organisatie, de welbekende CanMeds rollen, zijn heel erg belangrijk.

Als project student bij AFD kreeg ik een zalige kans om deze vaardigheden volledig te ontplooien. De ervaringen met en in het Zuiden zijn ook een ideale voorbereiding op een latere stage in het buitenland. Mijn bijdrage als student geneeskunde was allesbehalve beperkt tot de medische kennis nodig voor ons project met herbruikbaar maandverband. Samen stelden we een business plan op en gingen we op zoek naar sponsors. Mijn presentatie skills verbeterden ook aanzienlijk. Al doende leert men en binnen AFD is dat heel aangenaam!”

“As a future doctor it is important to master other skills besides medical knowledge and competences. Cooperation, communication, professionalism and organisation, the well-known CanMeds roles, are very important.

As a project student of AFD I got the amazing opportunity to develop these skills entirely. The experience with and in the South was an ideal preparation for a future internship in a foreign country. My contribution as a medical student was not at all limited to the medical knowledge needed for our project with reusable sanitary towels. Together we composed a business plan and looked for sponsors. My presentation skills improved significantly as well. One learns by doing and AFD makes this very pleasant!”

“Als industrieel ingenieur Milieukunde, was ik altijd al geboeid door hernieuwbare energie. Nu krijg ik echter de kans om de kennis van mijn interessegebied toe te passen ten voordele van de lokale bevolking in Senegal.

Zo ben ik bijvoorbeeld verantwoordelijk voor het selecteren van kwaliteitsvolle zonnesystemen op maat van de lokale bevolking. Ik heb al enorm veel bijgeleerd gedurende dit jaar en mijn enthousiasme voor het project en AFD blijft met de dag toenemen.”

“As an industrial engineer in ecology, I was always passionate about renewable energy. Now I finally got the chance to apply the knowledge of my interests in the benefit of Senegal’s local community.

To give an example, I am responsible for selecting solar systems of high quality, adapted to the needs of the local community. I already learned a lot this year and my enthusiasm for the AFD project still grows every day.”

Noesjka Defillet - Psychology "Een aanvraag indienen voor een project bij Academics for Development was één van de beste beslissingen die ik ooit heb gemaakt. Mijn vier teamgenoten en ik werkten een jaar lang intensief samen met als doel een job office op te richten in Zuid-Afrika. Met mijn psychologische achtergrond had ik een boeiende invalshoek op het probleem te bieden en mijn kennis omtrent organisatiestructuren, coping mechanismen en werkloosheid kwam dan ook goed van pas. Ik vond het eveneens zeer boeiend om samen te werken met studenten van andere faculteiten. Door deze multidisciplinaire samenwerking leer je op een andere manier naar problemen kijken waardoor je ook erg veel bijleert van elkaar. Dat je als groep volledig ownership hebt over het project en het nadien ter plaatse gaat uitvoeren schept ongelofelijk veel voldoening. Het was een onbeschrijflijke ervaring die ik iedereen kan aanraden!"

“Applying for a project with Academics For Development was one of the best decisions I ever made. My four teammates and I intensively worked together for a year with the objective of starting a job office in South Africa. My psychological background helped me bring a unique perspective to the problem. Also my knowledge regarding organisational structures, coping mechanisms and unemployment helped me a lot. Working together with students from other faculties was very interesting. This kind of multidisciplinary cooperation teaches you to look at a problem from another point of view. Having complete control over the project and being able to execute it on the spot is very satisfying. It is an experience I can fully recommend to everyone!”

Marie Pieters – Psychology “Bij mijn vorige ervaringen met vrijwilligerswerk bleef ik steeds op mijn honger zitten. Je ging naar een ver land, probeerde daar in meestal moeilijke omstandigheden iets nuttigs te verrichten en kwam terug zonder te weten of je iets duurzaam had achtergelaten. AFD werkt dit gevoel helemaal weg. Wij werken een heel jaar met hart en ziel naar een duurzaam project toe waarbij de kers op de taart de uitvoering ter plaatse is. Dit schept veel meer voldoening! Vanuit mijn psychologische achtergrond kan ik een ander perspectief bieden op ons werk en de samenwerking met de jongeren uit een vreemde cultuur. Mijn kennis van organisatiestructuren en teamprocessen komt bij de uiteenlopende taken goed van pas. Ik word ook uitgedaagd door mijn teamgenoten om mijn grenzen te verleggen op gebieden waar ik vanuit mijn studie niet veel achtergrondkennis over heb. Door de multidisciplinaire samenwerking leer ik heel veel bij waardoor mijn intellectuele horizon zich verruimt.”

“My previous experiences working as a volunteer were unsatisfying to me. Going to a foreign country, trying to do something useful in difficult circumstances, without knowing whether you had done something useful… However, AFD changed my mind completely. We were able to work passionately on a project and execute it in the field. This gave me a lot of satisfaction. With my psychological background and knowledge of organisational structures and teamwork, I could offer a different approach to the work and the cooperation with the local people. I was challenged by my teammates to expand my horizon by learning about new subjects. Due to the multidisciplinary cooperation, I learned a lot more than I expected.”

Seppe ELOOT – Bioscience Engineering

Als bio-ingenieur kwam ik regelmatig in contact met ontwikkelings-gerelateerde zaken in het Zuiden. Gek genoeg beperkt ontwikkelingssamenwerking zich vaak tot financiële bijdragen en ondersteuning. Academics for Development ziet het grotere plaatje en streeft naar een symbiotische relatie tussen de student enerzijds en de projectpartner anderzijds. De studenten krijgen de kans om hun theoretische kennis in de praktijk om te zetten terwijl de projectpartners geassisteerd worden in die zaken die voor hun het meest problematisch zijn. Lokale vraag, duurzaam ondernemen en social impact; deze kernwaarden van AFD vormen de basis van de snelle groei die AFD in zijn korte bestaan heeft ervaren. Deze waarden gecombineerd met de ongelofelijke competentie, toewijding en bedrevenheid van mijn collega's maken me trots om deel uit te maken van het AFD-verhaal.

“As a bio-engineering student, I often came into contact with development related causes in the South. Strangely, more often than not, these projects or enterprises only engaged in financial aid and support. Academics for Development sees the bigger picture and strives for a symbiotic relation between the student and the project partners. The students get the chance to put their theoretical knowledge into practice whereas the project partners are assisted in those matters being most problematic to them. Local demand, sustainable entrepreneurship and social impact: these core values of AFD form the foundation of the rapid growth AFD has experienced. Those values combined with the incredible competence, dedication and ardency of my colleagues make me proud to be a part of the AFD-story!”

"Bij de voorstelling van de projecten die AFD aanbiedt, was het voor mij niet echt duidelijk wat een politiek wetenschapper zoals ik precies zou kunnen bijdragen aan dergelijke projecten. Ik twijfelde dan ook om mij in te schrijven, tot het AFD-team mij toch wist te overtuigen dat ik absoluut mijn steentje zou kunnen bijdragen.

Ze hadden gelijk. Met mijn kennis over internationale organisaties en vaardigheden zoals kritisch reflecteren en efficiënt informatie opzoeken kon ik zeker iets betekenen in ons onderzoek naar flexibele mechanismen in de Filipijnen en Peru. Niet alleen kon ik zelf kennis overbrengen, maar heb ik in het hele jaar vooral ook enorm veel bijgeleerd, meerdere keren mijn grenzen verlegd en enorm veel voldoening en appreciatie gekregen voor ons werk."

“At the presentation of the AFD projects, it wasn’t very clear to me what a political scientist like me could add to such a project. I had serious doubts about applying until the AFD team convinced me that I could definitely add value.

And they were right. My knowledge about international organizations and different skills like critical thinking and efficiently searching for information were very useful in our research for flexible mechanisms in the Philippines and Peru. Not only did I transfer knowledge but I also learned a lot during the year. I stretched my limits and got a lot of satisfaction and appreciation for our work.”
