COST
From 2007, 538 Actions in 10 Domains for a budget of 123 Mio Euros, FP7 via the European Science Foundation
Funding for networking and dissemination activities, thus the participating scientists must have secured research funding from other national or European sources
Key instrument for scientific networking, collaboration, exchange, training and dissemination activities
Actions are means to pool and share national research investments. COST estimates that each Action pools about 3.3 Mio Euros per year or about 100.000 Euros per participating researcher per year (OECD/Eurostat, Frascati Manual, 2002).

Summary
Material science is of crucial importance to tackle the Grand Challenges of our society. Value Added Materials belong to the Key Enabling Technologies and can deliver valuable solutions to improve quality of life of the European citizens, stimulate growth, wealth and job creation.
This portfolio analysis:
Gives an overview of the FP7 project portfolio of the Unit RTD/Materials and of projects on material science of the European Research Council (ERC) and the COST Actions.
Shows that material science plays an important role along the innovation value-chain and that research on materials is also largely cross-cutting as it encompasses multiple disciplines and various fields of application.
Contributes to the strategic discussion about future European research.
