VALUE FOR THE WEEK: “RESPECT”

WINTER PRAYER There is a winter in all of our lives,

a chill and darkness that makes us yearn for days that have gone or put our hope in days yet to be.

Father, you created seasons for a purpose. Spring is full of expectation, buds breaking,

frosts abating and an awakening of creation before the first days of summer.

Now the sun gives warmth and comfort to our lives, reviving aching joints, bringing colour,

new life and crops to fruiting. Autumn gives nature space to lean back,

relax and enjoy the fruits of its labour, mellow colours in sky and landscape

as the earth prepares to rest. Then winter, cold and bare as nature takes stock

rests, unwinds, sleeps until the time is right. An endless cycle and yet a perfect model.

We need a winter in our lives, a time of rest, a time to stand still,

a time to reacquaint ourselves with the faith in which we live.

It is only then that we can draw strength from the one in whom we are rooted,

take time to grow and rise through the darkness into the warm glow of your springtime

to blossom and flourish, bring colour and vitality into this world, your garden.

Thank you Father for the seasons of our lives. Amen

th June at the Tamworth Town Hall from 10.00am for our

rd June. Our students are very excited and have been

busy preparing and practising for their performance. All children are requested to wear their full winter uniform (including tie).

Eisteddfod Choir – Monday 20th June – Year 2 & Primary Choir students The Primary Choir and our Year 2 students are also busily preparing for their choir performance at the Tamworth Eisteddfod on Monday 20

th June in the Tamworth Town Hall. All students are required to wear their full winter uniform (including

a tie). Permission notes went home today with the respective choir students. IMPORTANT INFO: Parents and caregivers, please note that filming or taking photos of students on mass in the Town Hall is strictly prohibited as it breaks child protection laws as not all children have media permission. Anyone found taking photos or videoing will be asked to leave the Hall.

Catholic Schools Celebrate Preparations are well underway for Catholic Schools Celebrate 2016. Catholic Schools Celebrate - CAPTIVATE will be held on the evening of Thursday 15th September at the Tamworth Regional Entertainment Conference Centre, commencing at 7.00pm.

Five schools will be participating in this year’s production. A number of enthusiastic and committed staff members from these participating schools have begun to meet after school on a regular basis to ‘nut out’ ideas and to begin the huge task of organisation.

This year students in Years 5 and 6 will participate and be involved. CSC is a wonderful opportunity for our students to work together with staff and students from other schools and often many new friendships are forged from this event. It is also a way for students to work through and achieve many of the outcomes outlined in the Creative Arts Curriculum. It allows many students the chance to showcase their cultural talents in a non-competitive yet professional setting where the main purpose is to showcase talent, creativity and to provide entertainment of a high standard.

SPONSORSHIP

We thank the ADIG and Catholic Schools Office for their kind support of our production. We would like to invite any Tamworth Businesses or families who would also like to sponsor the wonderful event to please contact Mrs Lisa McSweeney (lmcsweeney@stnicholastamworth. catholic.edu.au) or Mrs Julie McGuirk (jmcguirk@stnicholastamworth. catholic.edu.au). Every little bit helps!!

RE NEWS

First Communion

Congratulations to the children who received the Sacrament of the Eucharist, the

2nd Sacrament of Initiation, on Sunday, the Feast of Corpus Christi. It was

wonderful see all of the students so reverent, dressed beautifully in white to

receive this most precious Sacrament. Congratulations to the Year 3 teachers, for

your hard work to ensure the students were so well prepared. Thank you to

Father Paul for celebrating the Mass.

The Feast of The Visitation

Tomorrow, Tuesday 31st May, is the Feast of The Visitation.

This Feast celebrates Mary visiting her cousin Elizabeth. After

the angel Gabriel had announced to Mary that she was to

become the mother of Our Lord, Mary went from Galilee to

Judea to visit her kinswoman Elizabeth, soon to be the mother

of John the Baptist. This visit is recorded in the Gospel of

Luke. Elizabeth greeted Mary with the words, "Blessed are you

among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb." Mary

burst forth with the song of praise which we call the

Magnificat, beginning, "My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord".

Family Mass

This Sunday 5th June is the Years 1 & 4 Family Mass. We invite all families to attend, to gather

as a School and Parish Community to celebrate the Mass. Please bring a plate and stay for

morning tea and a chat. We hope to see you there!

Advance Notice

Tuesday 14th June – Kindergarten Grade Liturgy, 11.40am Infants Hall – parents and friends

welcome.

WISE WORDS FOR FAMILIES – “Do you let your kids amaze you?”

“I'm amazed at what children CAN do when given the opportunity and encouragement. I love

the pride, confidence and sense of purpose/ pleasure in contributing, each new skill achieved

brings. The smiles are awesome too.”

A mother left this comment on our Facebook page recently in response to our post: “What would be the impact

if you did less, not more for your children?”

Lovely answer!

It got me thinking that the joy that this mother took from watching her children develop independence was no

accident. Her parenting style played a large role in her children’s independence. All power to her and her

parenting style!

I’ve long believed that adults are the gatekeepers for children’s independence.

We open the gate to independence when we give children opportunities to develop self-help skills (carry their

own schoolbags, get themselves up in the morning, tidy their own rooms); provide them with real

responsibility (feeding pets, setting the meal table and preparing meals) and give them autonomy to make

some of their own decisions (choosing clothes within limits, following own interests, making choices about

pocket-money spending).

We close the independence gate when we do too much for children (tidy their toys away, pack their

schoolbags, make simple snacks); rescue them from learning opportunities (take forgotten lunches to school,

sort out their friendship problems, pay their library fines) and neglect to build scaffolds to independence (such

as help them make their bed, walk half way to school, teach them to ride public transport).

It’s a quirk of parenting that many children think they are older than they are, and parents think their children

are younger than they are. We underestimate children’s abilities to the detriment of their development.

Are you an opener or closer of the gate to children’s independence?

Think of independence as a continuum with opening the gate and closing the gate at either end. If your

parenting is more at the closing end, then look for ways to move down the continuum towards independence

building. My advice is to make small adaptations to your parenting. For instance, start with a child making their

own snacks before moving to helping you to prepare a meal. But first you need to develop a mindset for

independence building. That means, be on the lookout for opportunities for children to do things for

themselves.

As many readers will know, I firmly believe that the job of parents is to make ourselves redundant from the

earliest possible age of a child’s life. That means, that our interactions with kids have an endgame in mind – we

want our kids to be able to stand on their own two feet physically (Don’t we get a kick out of them walking for

the first time!), emotionally (with support, of course) and to navigate their world without being reliant on

others.

There is no better feeling as a parent than watching your child beam with joy and pride when they’ve mastered

a new skill, overcome a challenge or conquered a fear. It’s those times that make parenting so worthwhile.

Those awesome smiles won’t happen by accident. They require a parenting style that gives kids a chance to be

independent; that encourages them to be brave and offers them the safety net of emotional support when life

throws them curve balls. Why not try it? Give your kids a chance to amaze you.
