GGetting Rid of an AnnoyingPain in the Neck

By Cassie Woods

Statistics show that 85 percentof people in the United Stateswill suffer from back or neckpain at some point in their lives.

treatments available at SpinalDecompression of Oklahoma.

Jan works right next door atClaremore Health Associates,Inc., yet she had never seen theIDD machines. She knew verylittle about the treatments untilone of the doctors at the practiceshe works in made the suggestion.

“I didn’t realize I sufferedfrom osteoarthritis until Dr.Fortner diagnosed me with itduring my exam, and I learnedthat Spinal Decompression ofOklahoma could be an optionfor me,” said Jan.

IDD therapy is non-surgicaland non-invasive. The procedureuses computer technology to target specific spinal segments.Pressure is relieved on the spineas the therapy recreates space foroxygen, water and nutrients totravel unimpeded throughout thespine. The final effect is rehydrated spinal discs throughtreatments that are safer, lessexpensive and less painful thansurgery or injections.

Jan’s IDD therapy consistedof 20 treatments beginning inAugust, the entire process lasting

Jan Crismond was one of thosepeople. That was before she discovered the IntervertebralDisc Decompression (IDD)

about six weeks. During the firsttwo weeks of her treatment, shereceived treatments five days aweek. Jan reports that she felt agreat improvement in her rangeof motion and comfort withinthe second week of treatment. From there, she alternatedbetween two and three treatments a week until all 20treatments had been performed.

“Ebony administered treatments,” said Jan. “She wasan absolute jewel – so gentle andcaring. Each week she graduallyincreased the tension as my treatments progressed. She wasalways quick to ask if it was toomuch or too little. Because shereally took the time to listen toand work with me, I never hadany pain during treatments.”

The therapy (which typicallylasts 20 sessions) is intended tobe a one-time process unlessthere is a re-injury or an advancement of a progressive illness. But in most cases, once isenough to have a life-changingdifference.

“It’s really the little thingsthat I noticed to be the biggestdifferences,” said Jan. “Beingable to turn my head to lookover my shoulder while driving, improved range of motion in myneck, and even being able tosleep better. I used to have sinusproblems that affected my sleep, and my treatment even helped toimprove that.”

Jan also stated that she usedto feel a tingling, numb feelingdown her arm every night andday that distracted her from herwork or daily routine. She

reports that even though nothingin her environment has changed, since receiving the treatments, she has not had that sensationagain.

Spinal Decompression ofOklahoma can treat both the cervical (neck) and the lumbar(lower back) areas. In addition to neck pain similar

to what Jan was experiencing,IDD treatments have been foundto be effective in patients with herniated or bulging discs, degenerative disc disease, posterior facet syndrome, sciaticaand low back pain.

The treatments require adoctor’s prescription and are covered by most insurances. Apatient can be referred fromtheir primary care doctor or maybe fully evaluated by one of thethree doctors at SpinalDecompression of Oklahoma todetermine their candidacy.

You can obtain furtherinformation, take a virtual tourof the office, read patient testimonials, and fill out the pre-qualifying form to determineyour candidacy for treatments byvisiting the website atwww.sdoback.com. You may alsocall Ebony at (918) 341-1250 tofill out the pre-qualifying form.

Oftentimes people associatevision problems with aging, making the assumption that children are born with perfectvision. Numerous studies, however, contradict this notion. The American OptometricAssociation (AOA) estimatesthat “nearly 25 percent ofschool-age children have visionproblems.” Yet, 86 percent offirst-grade students have neverreceived any type of eye exam. Itshould come as no surprise, then, that 60 percent of “problem learners” have visionproblems that go undetected.

“Eye exams for childrenentering school are critical forearly intervention,” says Dr.Hinkle of Primary Eye CareAssociates of Owasso. “This isneeded to treat diseases and disorders that can lead to poorschool performance and can ultimately affect a child’s qualityof life.”

According to Dr. Hinkleand his colleague Dr. Cash, thereare certain telltale signs a childmay be experiencing vision difficulty. Are his eyes or eyelidsnoticeably red? Does the child

“yes,” then the child most certainly needs an eye exam.

One might ask, “But aren’tthere routine vision screenings atevery school?” According tostudies cited by the AOA, thesescreenings are designed to detectpotential issues, but are not comprehensive enough and arenot diagnostic. “Vision screening

rub his eyes a lot or complain offrequent headaches? Does heturn or tilt the head as if tryingto focus with just one eye? Doeshe avoid tasks that would requirea lot of visual focus, such as coloring and reading, or hand-eye coordinated activities, such as doing puzzles? If theanswer to these questions is

programs that are well-designedand properly administered in thepublic or private schools shouldbe utilized to assist in the identification of children in needof care who have not had accessto comprehensive examinationservices,” states the AOA.Vision screenings are only usedto test visual acuity, while a comprehensive eye exam givenby optometrists involves assess-ment and possible treatment ofthis and other problems involv-ing binocular vision, refractivestatus, oculomotility, and generalocular health. The AOA also recommends assessments beginat age three, rather than waitinguntil the child enters school.

Shelley Moody, office manager of Owasso’s PrimaryEye Care Associates, provides aperfect example of the impor-tance of early eye examination inchildren. “My sister couldn’t seewell from the time she was born, and in school she was moved tothe front of the class – where shestill couldn’t see,” she recounts.“When she finally got her firstpair of glasses, she told ourmother she was amazed that

those things on the trees wereleaves and not green cottonballs!”

Shelly goes on to explainthat it is so important that parents and optometrists worktogether on behalf of the childbecause, like her sister, a childdoes not actually realize for herself that she is not seeingproperly. “Children who startout with poor vision don’t haveanything to compare things to,”she explains. “They only knowwhat they are born with.”

To schedule an eye exam foryour child or yourself, contactone of the fine optometrists withany area Primary Eye CareAssociates, located in Tulsa,Broken Arrow, Collinsville,Owasso and Sand Springs.

Primary Eye Care Associates urges parents to have their children’s eyes examined by an optometrist, rather than relying onschool vision screenings.

HHelping Students Affected byMS Pursue Their Dreams

By Brandi Moore

The National Multiple SclerosisSociety: Oklahoma hasannounced this year’s recipientsof its annual scholarship program: Taylor Aldridge, SeanBarger, Christopher Basden,Whitney Force, Colby Gibson,Alli Martin, Shelby Noland,Jessica Potter, Macayla Potter andShelby Reeves.

The annual scholarship program helps students affectedby multiple sclerosis pursue a col-lege or technical school educa-tion. It is open to high schoolseniors who live with MS or havea parent who does, or anybodyliving with MS who has not yetbeen to a post-secondary school.

In addition to the emotionaltoll, MS can have a substantialfinancial impact on a family. Thedirect and indirect costs of MS,including lost wages – even forthose with health insurance – areestimated at more than $70,000annually per household. Thismakes funding a college education that much harder. “If I could, I would want mydad’s MS to be given to me for 10 years so he could feel goodagain and be given a time of rest, but I know this is not possible,”said Sean Barger, Broken Arrow

also asked to provide a personalstatement describing the impactMS has had on their life.Scholarships range from $1,000to $3,000 and typically cover oneyear, although a limited numberof awards may exceed thisamount.

“For the Barger family andthe hundreds of thousands diagnosed with MS across thecountry, there are very fewknown sources of scholarshipassistance specially targeted forthese families,” said Dupee. “MSshouldn’t stand in the way of aneducation, and we are hopefulthis program will give familiessome relief.”

Information about scholarships for 2013-14 will beavailable on the National MSSociety website on October 1,2012. For more information, call1-800-344-4867 or visitwww.nationalMSsociety.org/scholarship.

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow ofinformation within the brain, andbetween the brain and body.Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with

scholarship winner. “My parentshave always encouraged me tocomplete my education so I canfulfill my goals and dreams notonly for myself but for the familyI hope to have one day.”

“We are pleased to say thatthe National MS Society:Oklahoma provided 10 highschool seniors with college schol-arships for the 2012 school year,”said Sharleen Dupee, director ofprograms and services for theNational MS Society: Oklahoma.“This scholarship program existsto help highly qualified studentswho have been diagnosed withMS or who have a parent withMS achieve their dreams of goingto college.”

The Society established itsscholarship program nine yearsago, and it immediately became asource of great encouragementfor families concerned that MSmight put college out of reach. This year, 409 new awards and236 renewals totaling $1,136,175were presented nationwide.Applications are evaluated onfinancial need, academic record, leadership and volunteer activi-ties, a statement of educationaland career goals, and letters ofrecommendation. Applicants are

the disease. Symptoms rangefrom numbness and tingling toblindness and paralysis. Theprogress, severity and specificsymptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research andtreatment are moving us closer toa world free of MS. Most peoplewith MS are diagnosed betweenthe ages of 20 and 50, with atleast two to three times morewomen than men being diagnosed with the disease. MSaffects more than 400,000 peoplein the United States and over 2.1million worldwide. The NationalMS Society addresses the challenges of each person affected

by MS by funding cutting-edgeresearch, driving change throughadvocacy, facilitating professionaleducation, collaborating with MSorganizations around the world, and providing programs and services designed to help peoplewith MS and their families moveforward with their lives.

Ten students in the state were awarded scholarships by the National MSSociety: Oklahoma to support their educational goals.

HHip, Hip, Hurray!By Joshua Danker-Dake

Janean McCorkle of BrokenArrow was born in 1956 withcongenital hip dislocation: herhip socket hadn’t formed correctly, so her hip bone wouldslide back and forth. Unable tocrawl as an infant, Janean spenttwo years in a splint.

In 2002, Janean’s knee gaveout and she fell down a flight ofstairs. Over the next seven years, she developed increasing pain inher right thigh and a severe limp. One of her friends had undergone knee replacement surgery with Dr. Ronald LaButtiyears before, and Janean went tohim on the basis of that glowingrecommendation.

“Dr. LaButti ordered hip X-rays, which showed that I wasbone-on-bone in my right hip,”says Janean. “He had me get asteroid injection in my right hipto see if I was a good candidatefor hip replacement. That oneshot took all my pain awayinstantly.”

After the shot, Janean experienced substantially lesspain, she says, and she under-went hip replacement surgery onher hip in April, 2010. “My hip

and his compassion for hispatients and their families. I’verecommended him to many people.”

Janean calls herself Dr.LaButti’s poster child for totalhip replacement. “I wish mymother-in-law could have gone toDr. LaButti – she had both hipsdone, and after the second, shesaid, ‘Never again.’ She livedwith post-operative pain until theday she died,” says Janean. “ButDr. LaButti is amazing – no onehas to endure hip or knee painwhen he’s right here in Tulsa.Dr. LaButti and his staff mademe feel like myself again, andI’m eternally grateful to all ofthem.”

For more information onDr. LaButti or knee or hipreplacement surgery, visitwww.hipandkneedoc.com.

was a mess when Dr. LaButti didthe operation. Bone grafting hadto be done. After the surgery, Ihad six weeks of recuperationand then four weeks of physicaltherapy. Dr. LaButti had donesuch a good job that my physicaltherapist was amazed at how wellI was doing. I had his notes sentto my therapist, and she said thatin all her years, she had neverseen such meticulous notes.”

Later, arthritis causedJanean’s left hip to deteriorate, causing her thigh pain. She wentback to Dr. LaButti, and in Juneof 2012, she had her left hipreplaced. “The left wasn’t as badas my right, and I bounced rightback after the surgery, with notherapy needed,” she says. “Iwent back to work in just threeweeks, and after both surgeries, Ineeded very little pain medication.”

Janean is effusive in herpraise for Dr. LaButti. “He gaveme my life back,” she says. “Ididn’t think it was possible tofeel this good again. I know whypeople come from out of state tosee him – his talent, his knowledge of new technology,
