Value of Coaching

Education Malek Ben- Musa

Cohort 6

The Value of Coaching Education cannot be quantified in simple terms.

Many variables allow a coach to influence the life of a child, teenager, or

an adult.

Education of Coaches allows for improvement in

the following:

• Knowledge of the game

• Technical, tactical, physical, psychological of players and teams

• Education of parents, staff, managers and others involved

• Experience in and around the game of soccer

• Personally, socially, and culturally

• Guidance on and off the field

• Individual and team

• Sharing Life Lessons

• Accountability, responsibility, community

• Mentoring players, coaches and others in the game

• Counseling, teaching how to teach, guiding their career paths

Below is a gift that hangs on my wall, given by one of

my teams about what a coach can be to a team…

Knowledge of the game of soccer

The 4 pillars of Youth Coaching by Ken Sweda , April 20, 2012 (cit. 1)

Technical

The ability and skill of an individual player to manage the ball and develop a relationship with the ball.

Tactical

Considered a “double edged sword” if introduced too early will hinder a player’s development

Focus on technical development, allowing the game to teach itself is a prudent and effective way for it to be taught.

Physical

The development of the physical attributes of a player including speed, strength, agility, and overall athletic ability. Unfortunately, the youth of today maybe losing on their “ physical literacy” because of lack of free play and or cross sport training due to specialization of sports.

Psychological

The psychological attributes and traits of children is the most problematic, misused, and underused pillar in youth coaching. This aspect would allow coaches who improve their coaching education greater success in developing players.

(Cit.2)

Soccer Coaching education has been available for over 40 years.

Every US soccer organization from the smallest to the largest offers education

starting at the U6 age.

75% of volunteers have no formal soccer education

Coaching education classes vary from 1 day to over a week for diplomas and degrees

Coaching Education can raise retention rates not only with players, but also

coaches, staff, managers, administrators and other volunteers

Education also gets everyone on the same page and informed thus keeping

arguments between parents, coaches, administrators, to a minimum.

Experiences

• Personal Experiences

• Coaching education can come from various experiences

including personal moments

• Social Experiences

• Memories, bonds, friendships can all help a coach give

them teaching points that are effective

• Cultural Experiences

• It’s the “Beautiful game” and travel to different

cultures and places can be life changing and inspiring

for coaches. These experiences can be shared with

players, teams, other coaches and their families

The game of soccer and the coaches have the ability

to foster and build a higher level of awareness,

diplomacy and cultural relevance

Guidance

It is possible that a coach may only need to guide a team and

over-coaching may just get in the way of positive results.

Positive results may mean winning, but it may also mean

improving individually and or as a team.

Stats can help show this overall improvement

These can be as easy as shots on goal, how many times the ball was

stolen from the other team or how long we had possession.

Stats are just another tool to be used by a coach

Among my favorite coaching maxims, “I have given you a lot of

tools to use and you can either build yourself a shack or a

mansion of soccer….your choice.”

Guiding instead of coaching can allow players to figure it out for

themselves.

Soccer teaches itself

Life Lessons

Life lessons is “something from which useful knowledge or principles can be

learned” (cit. 4)

Coaches use these “Life Lessons” to put things into perspective or to show a

teaching point that can resonate with a player or team

Anna-Lesa Calvert speaks in this video and how much a coach can effect a

player or team (cit. 5)

Mentoring

Mentoring can occur with someone older or younger and it a relationship that develops with

someone of expertise and person who is willing to learn

Mentoring is a great tool for a coach to develop others

Mentors are parents, coaches, teachers, colleagues, and others as well

Mentors can share wisdom, knowledge, experiences, and skills

Mentors also are concerned about your well being and career path

(Cit. 9&10)

Ron Kessler –Life coach

Mentors play a great role in coaching education and could mean the

difference in retaining a coach, player, parent volunteer and administrators.

The Value of Coaching Education

The Value of coaching education is not quantified in simple terms.

In other words it can not be as simple as wins and losses

The education of a coach can come in various ways

Knowledge

Experience

Guidance

Life Lessons

Mentoring

These points can all add up to an education that no real value can be placed.

It is up to the individual coach/teacher to use his/her knowledge and

experiences to pass on to the next generation. Their efforts will guide and

mentor others and impart life lessons that can be used throughout their lives.

I dedicate this presentation

to Collin Lovett, who passed

away in January 2014. It

was an honor to coach him

and be part of his life. A

great team player in every

way. He is greatly missed.

May he rest in peace.
