But in this industry there are lots of examples of both great games that didn’t sell, and less-than-great games that did. We want creative excellence, and commercial success. That’s why we’re here. Ask anyone who works at Activision, or with Activision, their favorite thing about it, and they’ll tell you it’s the people. We have a rigorous hiring process and a rigorous talent planning process. And that means if you’re reading this, you’re probably a pretty special talent. Our success doesn’t come from assembly lines producing widgets. Our success comes from people producing greatness. Employees should never be surprised by something they hear in a performance review. Similarly, managers should never be surprised by something they hear in an exit interview. If we’re all doing our jobs right, then the daily process of our work should bring about ample opportunities for constructive feedback in both directions. This goes beyond individual relationships to the company’s communications with employees as a whole. We strive for transparency whenever possible, and explanation always. You deserve nothing less. We believe that great creativity comes from great creative micro-cultures joined together by common values, not identical executions. That’s why we pioneered the independent studio model, which is a foundation of who we are. Our studios retain their own brand names, their own cultures and their own approach. And yet they are all aligned behind Activision’s ethos of making great games that sell. The same holds true of our departments and offices worldwide. At our scale we need systems and processes. But we also need to make sure those processes don’t stifle the very creativity that is the company’s lifeblood. This is a constantly changing industry. But we never want to get caught up in the “next big thing” before figuring out what our unique contribution and competitive advantage to that thing can be. Acting like an owner-operator means spending the company’s money like it was your own. It does not mean hoarding every penny like it was your last. No company ever saved its way to greatness. And no company ever frivolously spent its way to greatness either.
