Seat Seals MBWB/1 Ball Valves feature a trunnion- mounted, fixed ball design, employing floating seats which achieve independent sealing. The ball rotates about its vertical axis between the stem and bottom trunnion. The initial seal, at extremely low differential pressure, is obtained by the spring-loaded floating seats, which are free to move slightly along the longitudinal axis of the valve. Line pressure behind the upstream seat ring supplements the seat spring load to force the upstream seat tightly against the ball. The valve body cativy, with the valve in closed position, is sealed from line flow and pressure by the upstream and downstream seats. The type of sealing assure block and bleed service. The spring-loaded seat seals are reinforced synthetic material contained on three sides by a metal seat ring. Stem Seals Apipe plug is provided in the area between the stem O’rings to check integrity of stem seals. Should the O’rings seals fail, the stem seal integrity can be renewed by the injection of plastic packing. Features Through Conduit. Bubble-tight seal at any pressure. Three sections bolted body, permits disassembly on job sight. Bonnet design for easy adaptation of extensions, gear or power operator. Seat SealsMBWB/1 Ball Valves feature a trunnion-mounted, fixed ball design, employingfloating seats which achieve independentsealing. Structure & Function: Sealing Principle

Stem & Trunnion Construction

The stem and trunnion are separate from the ball. The top entry stem-to-ball connection is archieved by close tolerance hex in the ball socket drive. The stemshoulder bears against a DU ® thrust washer. A hex socket in the ball transmitstorque from stem to ball. The stem rotates in a pair of DU ® bearings with a wideseparation is rigidly bolted to the body, with a long DU ® bearing in the ball. Thissystem effectively eliminates cocking tendencies.

Upstream Seat (Figure 2)

Line pressure Pu, is pushing on the exposed area A2 on the back side of the seatand is creating a force which is pushing the seat towards the ball. Because the areaA2 on the back side of seat, (which is exposed to line pressure) is greater than thearea A1 on the front part of the seat (which is also exposed to the same line pres-sure), there is a greater force F = PuX (where X = A2 - A1) pushing the seat towardsthe ball than the force trying to push the seat off the ball.

Upstream Seat (Figure 3)

This same principle applies to the downstream seat when the body pressure (Pb)is higher than the downstream line pressure (Pb). Again, since of the seat than thearea A3 on the front side of the seat, and these areas are both exposed to the samebody cavity pressure, Pb there will always be more force pushing the seat towardsthe ball than that pushing it off. The net force holding the seat against the ball is F = Pb X (where X = A4 - A3).

Emergency Seat (Figure 4)

Under throttling conditions or in the presence of excessive line contaminants thepossibility of leakage, due to erosion, is greater than when a valve is used for normal on-off service. All valve are designed not to require sealants; however,if the metal-to-metal primary seal and the secondary O’ring seal are damaged, an emergency shut-off-may be obtained with a sealant injected into a speciallydesigned groove in the seat ring assembly.Emergency seal is a standard feature for MBWB/2 valves; it is a standard featurealso for high pressure (class 900 and 1500) and buried service.

Piston Effect Principle (Figure 1)

MBWB/1 and MBWB/2 seats are designed to achieve“piston effect” principle assures dead-tight sealingsimultaneously on both sides of the ball.The seat design of MBWB/1 and MBWB/2 ball valvesassure dead-tight independent downstream sealing.Should upsstream seal fail, tight shut-off is still assuredby independent downstream sealing.Seat Seals Detail: MBWB/2 valves floating seat design assures dead-tight independent upstream and

downstream sealing. Sealing is performed by both a primary metal-to-metal seal and a secondary,

protected O’ring seal. The initial seal, at extremely low pressure differential, or vacuum conditions, is

obtained by the floating seats being forced against the ball by spring force. Increased line pressure

forces the ball tightly against the downstream seat to effect the downstream seal. The upstream seal

is assured when the upstream seal is forced against the ball. Line pressure based on the unbalanced

pressure principle forces the downstream tightly against the ball. This results in upstream and downstream

bubble-tight seal which function independlenty under all pressure conditions.
