Joint welcome from the Province of British Columbia and the First Nations Leadership Council
It is our great pleasure to welcome all delegates to the 5th annual B.C. Cabinet & First Nations Leaders’ Gathering held on the territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish First Nations.
This year’s gathering is organized in partnership between the First Nations Leadership Council and the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation.
The gathering offers numerous opportunities for First Nations leaders to meet with B.C. Cabinet Ministers on issues of importance to your communities, and to build relationships with leaders from other communities.
Reconciliation is a cross-government priority. This gathering offers us all face-to-face opportunities to continue on the path towards building a fair, just and equitable partnership where we are working together to advance respectful government-to-government relationships that support reconciliation and self-determination.

Working in partnership is a hallmark of reconciliation. The Province of British Columbia and First Nations Leadership Council have been working collaboratively to commission an artistic design that represents the important themes of renewal, reconciliation and cultural connections; communication and collaborative exchange of ideas; and partnership, shared endeavours and building relationships.
We are honoured to thank accomplished artist Andy Everson from the K’òmoks First Nation for his beautiful design that embodies all of these important themes.
Andy explains that the four feathers represent the diversity of the Indigenous peoples of British Columbia and the drum symbolizes the heartbeat of Indigenous ceremonies. The feathers are arranged in four directions to represent the people of the North Coast (North), Interior (East), Salish (South) and those who have become disconnected from their home or have relocated to western Canada (West).
Andy draws upon his roots amongst the Kwakawaka’wakw, Salish and Tlingit peoples to create artwork that reflects the convergence of ancient traditions with modern society.
The new design was commissioned to replace a previous provincial government design, which used Indigenous iconography but was not created by an Indigenous artist. The move to the new four-feathers design is intended to right that wrong.
A number of respected Indigenous artists were invited to submit designs. The final design was selected by a panel with representation from the Ministry of Indigenous Relations and Reconciliation, First Nations Leadership Council, First Peoples’ Cultural Council and Royal BC Museum’s First Nations’ Repatriation department.
This outstanding design will be used at the annual BC Cabinet & First Nations Leaders’ Gathering, and it will be an important and featured component on government-to-government agreements, as well as other provincial communications materials related to reconciliation.
