The Canadian Rockies are a short, scenic car ride away from Calgary or Edmonton (see page 6 for information).

Banff and Lake Louise overflow with abundant wildlife, pristine forests, jagged mountainranges, alpine meadows, turquoise and emerald lakes, and mammoth glaciers. For the outdoorenthusiast, this area offers unparalleled beauty and year-round activities. In the summermonths there are hundreds of miles of hiking trails, fast-moving trout streams, and relaxing hotsprings. During the winter you’ll still be able to enjoy the hot springs, especially rejuvenatingafter a day on the area’s many downhill ski slopes or cross-country trails. And all year-roundthere is a gem in this natural beauty crown — The Fairmont Château Lake Louise, lookingmore like a regal palace than a hotel, set against the inspirational backdrop of snow-cappedmountains and the amazing, blue-green Lake Louise.

Canmore, a mountain village at the gateway to Banff National Park, is less than an hour fromCalgary. Shadowed by the Three Sisters Mountain Range (Faith, Hope, and Charity), you canhike, rock climb, or simply sightsee. Nearby is the Centennial Museum, which recalls Canmore’smining beginnings and farther out is the Nordic Centre, host of the 1988 Winter Olympic cross-country events and now a year-round recreational area.

South of Banff is Kananaskis Country, Alberta’s greatest outdoor playground with glacier-fedlakes, majestic mountains, and evergreen valleys. For the outdoor enthusiast, much is offered —trout fishing, river rafting, mountain biking, trail riding, backwoods hiking, and even aRobert Trent Jones-designed golf course!

Jasper National Park is a treasure chest of natural and scenic wonders, being home toCanada’s mighty Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca Glacier, and Alberta’s highest mountain,Mt. Robson. During the summer months there is camping, hiking, and fishing; and in thewinter there are ski resorts, cross-country trails to follow, and a pristine wilderness to admire.
