Automation Accessories

Autosampler features a 100 x 2 mL vial capacity carousel and is ideal for labs which require high throughput and conformational analyses. The possibility of bent needles is greatly reduced as the autosampler aligns the syringe over the injector nut before each injection.

KH-39001-20 Varian 8400 GC autosampler

Both the autoinjector and the autosampler offer two injection modes which provide an exceptional level of sample throughput. Dual injection mode injects two different samples into two different injectors at the same time. Duplicate injection mode injects the same sample into two different injectors sequentially; an improvement over splitting the sample between two columns with a single injection. Neither of these modes requires manual intervention. Standards or matrix spikes can be automatically added.

A waste drain and three separate wash vials eliminate sample carryover. Program any, all, or a combination of pre- and post-solvent flushes during method set-up. Both units prevent volatile solvent evaporation; sample trays and syringe needles are positioned away from heated surfaces.

l For increased speed and efficiency in analyzing GC samples

Autoinjector offers labs increased flexibility as the operator can select three different sample sizes: 2 mL, 5 mL, and 10 mL. All three size vials are held on a fixed carousel. To help prevent evaporation of volatile solvents, the autoinjector does not position samples directly over the injector port.

Detector / System SelectionA Gas Chromatograph with Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) is used for gas analysis or for simple mixtures. TCD responds well to oxygen, nitrogen, water, and other nonhydrocarbons with detection limits in the 100 ppm range. Filament protection eliminates TCD burnout.

B Gas Chromatograph with Flame Ionization Detector (FID) detects hydrocarbon down to 1.0 nanogram and responds linearly over a majority of its range. Hydrocarbons ionize in the hydrogen gas flame and are attracted to a metal collector electrode. Ceramic ignitor glows permanently to prevent flameouts and re-ignites when flame is flooded with water.

C Combination TCD and FID Detector is connected in series, allowing you to perform two analyses of the same sample at once.

PeakSimple analysis software (included)

Combine modes for more versatilityCreate multi-function modes by combining any of the four following nozzle movement modes.

Simple Mode controls dispensing or collection of a uniform quantity in each test tube for the entire sequence of tubes.

Window Mode lets you set up to 10 sample collection time windows and vary the interval between sample collections.

Peak Mode allows you to collect up to 10 individual absorbance peaks in separate tubes. At start, sample is discharged to wait drain if level is below the programmed peak value. Sample collection in the tubes begins when the detected absorbance level exceeds the programmed level. Between peaks, the sample is collected in a separate line of tubes. Use three-way valve 01473-93 for operation in peak mode; order separately below.

Bottle Mode lets you collect individually selectable quantities in larger-volume bottles.

Automate your fractioning procedures with our programmable fraction collector. Features three fractionation modes (time, drop count, and external count), and four-nozzle movement modes. A shifting-type nozzle that lets you deliver liquids into specified tube position. Hamilton polymeric PRP™ columns are resin-based, offering excellent resolution due to their high selectivity, efficiency, and capacity. The chemically inert macroporous poly (styrene-divinylbenzene) stationary phase is stable from pH 1 to 13. Compatible with any concentration of organic solvent; can be used up to 60°C and 5000 psi. Hamilton guarantees that the spherical media will not shrink or swell.

PRP-1 Reverse Phase Columns contain poly (styrene-divinyl-benzene). Large surface area (415 m2/g) allows high capacity and rapid flow rates for fast analysis. Ideal for separating strong acids and bases. Efficiency of 30,000 to 50,000 plates/meter.

PRP-3 Reverse Phase Columns are made of a wide pore (300 Å) poly (styrene-divinylbenzene) copolymer. Use to isolate or purify proteins and peptides. For extended life, regenerate your column up to five times—protein recoveries are better than 90%. Choose a 50-mm column for the gradient elution of high-molecular-weight proteins. The 150-mm column is best suited for the gradient separation of lower molecular weight proteins (less than 5000 MW).

PRP-X100 Strong Anion Exchange Columns contain poly (styrene-divinylbenzene)-trimethyl ammonium. These columns offer superior, rapid resolution. Exchange capacity is 0.2 mEq/g.

PRP-X200 Strong Cation Exchange Columns contain poly (styrene-divinylbenzene) sulfonate. These columns also offer superior, rapid resolution; exchange capacity is 0.035 mEq/g.

PRP-X300 Ion Exclusion Columns contain a partially sulfonated poly (styrene-divinylbenzene) media. Exhibit a high degree of both reverse phase and ion exclusion characteristics; separations are based on charge as well as relative hydrophobicity. Ideal for analysis of carboxylic acids and alcohols—no elevated temperature required. Exchange capacity is 0.17 mEq/g.

SPE CartridgesRemove sample impurities the fast, economical wayUse these versatile SPE (solid-phase extraction) cartridges to get rid of liquid sample impurities with minimal effort. Eliminate the excess time, hassle, glassware, solvent usage, and cleaning associated with conventional liquid-liquid extraction. SPE cartridges are also widely used to easily concentrate analytes, e.g. trace organic pollutants in environmental samples.

Flanged polypropylene cartridges contain highest quality silica media. Low levels of fines and acid washing reduce or eliminate the need to pre-condition Cole-Parmer SPE beds. Select the media and loading suitable for your application.

Solid-phase extraction or ”SPE” is a form of “digital chromatography”, an all-or-nothing approach to purifying a sample. Unlike regular liquid chromatography, where the elution of peaks or components occurs gradually, molecules adhere to SPE completely and then are totally released from the SPE media in a separate step.

Total adsorption of an analyte to a sorbent enables impurities to be rinsed away from the supported material using an appropriate solvent. For this step, the solvent has substantially less affinity for the analyte than does the SPE support material.

A final elution is then used to release the now-purified analyte away from the support. In this step, the solvent used has a strong affinity for the analyte. The process is shown visually at right.

Whatman® Flexible Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) PlatesMake the TLC plate you need—with a pair of scissors! These plates are ideal for applications that require rapid sample isolation or elution before other tests can be performed. Flexible plates exhibit the same characteristics as glass backed, silica gel plates while offering the convenience of custom sizing and flexibility.

MediaSilica Gel 60 Å Flexible Plates exhibit similar selectivity to the glass backed plates and are widely applicable for moderately to strongly polar analytes. Available on aluminum or polyester backing material.

Ion Exchange Plate (DEAE-diethylaminoethyl tertiary amine) is used for anionic species and is available on polyester-backed material.

Backing MaterialAluminum-Backed Plates are particularly useful for applications requiring charring.

Polyester-Backed Plates can be heated up to 110°C and are compatible with mobile phases containing strong acids or bases.

Cut flexible TLC plates to any size.

Thin Papers are ideal when the solute is not heavily loaded. They give you the best combination of speed and resolution for general purpose separations.

Thick Papers work best for heavily loaded solutes. Preparative separations benefit from the increased sample volumes that thicker papers carry. Ideal for-electrophoresis techniques.

Grade 1 CHR Papers are one of the thinnest papers available. They provide moderate flow rate, smooth surface, and good resolution.

Grade 3 CHR Papers are fairly thick and are ideal for general applications with medium to heavy solute loadings.

Grade 3 MM CHR Papers are thick with a smooth, medium-wet surface. These papers are used extensively as blotting paper for both electrophoresis and general chromatography.
