Opening Address
•For with the opening of this Council a new day is dawning on the Church, bathing her in radiant splendor. It is yet the dawn, but the sun in its rising has already set our hearts aglow. All around is the fragrance of holiness and joy. Yet there are stars to be seen in this temple, enhancing its magnificence with their brightness
Paul VI: Reopening Vatican II
* Development of the clear idea of the Church
* Renewal* Unity of all Christians* Dialogue between the
Church and the world
RENEWAL means resolving these tensions:
•STATUS QUO VS. RENEWAL: The goal of renewal is increased fidelity to Christ and the Faith. Sometimes we ought to leave the “old” to grow in faith, but we must not become disconnected with our Christian heritage.
•POINT OF DEPARTURE VS. POINT OF ARRIVAL: Vatican II is both departing from what does not contribute to our increased fidelity, but it is also “arriving” at new ways of “being Jesus” and “being Church” today.
•PROCESS VS. END “PRODUCT”. Both the journey and the end product or the destination matter. Faith is both a process or journey, and an experience reaching home - of Being with God here on earth as it will be in heaven. Therefore, both the journey or the process and end matter.
Renewal? Vatican II: “Clearly
wanted to speak of the Church within the discourse on God, to subordinate the discourse on the Church to the discourse on God.
Benedict XVI: Vatican II (Ratzinger): “Not only an
ecclesiological council, but that first and foremost , it spoke of God—and this not only within Christianity but to the world—of the God who is the God of all, who saves all and is accessible to all.”
Deeper Meaning of Council’s Structure (4 Constitutions):
Sacrosanctum Concilium: Adoration comes first – God comes first
Lumen Gentium: Church is guided by prayer, ecclesiology is connected with liturgy
Dei Verbum: Word of God convokes the Church and renews her in every age
Gaudium et Spes: The glorification of God is realized in active life, the light received from God is carried into the world.
Renewal in the Churchmeans seeing the Church now
asSACRAMENT, and not a fossilPEOPLE OF GOD, and not a buildingSERVANT, and not a dominatorCOMMUNION, and not divisivePILGRIM, and not disconnectedECUMENICAL COMMUNITY, and not “lone rangers.”
Therefore, these are our areas of concern
•Spiritual Renewal: prayer, the Eucharist….
•Pastoral Updating: Education on the Care of Persons
•Building Up of the Church: Social Mission
Concluding RemarksFaith grows when it is lived as an experience of Love received, and when it is communicated as an experience of grace and
joy. It makes us fruitful, because it expands our hearts in hope. Indeed, it opens the
hearts and minds of those who listen, to respond to the
Lord’s invitation to adhere to his word and BECOME HIS
DISCIPLES.
Porta Fidei: Benedict XVI (Year of Faith 2012)
FINAL Concluding Remarks…
Pope Francis Way:
“LET GOD’S SAVING LOVE in Christ Jesus conquer all through
us!”
