    It is good to have an end to a journey; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.Ernest Hemingway

    Vatsalya completes 12 years in 2012. It has been a great journey, full of exciting challenges and exhilarating

    achievements. As we travelled the road, we were joined by people who became our close allies and partners and

    we also lost a few close ones along the way. A time full of ups and downs, a lot of delightful moments and

    some heartbreaks; we felt blessed and distressed, we endured hardships and celebrated good days but we

    enjoyed being together every step of the way of the journey. In the end, it has made us feel proud and happy

    for being who we are as individuals and as an organization. We stand for truth and honesty, justice and

    equality and we work towards creating a peaceful and prosperous society...:)

    Vatsalya is involved with a range of varied activities through which it invests in empowering children, youth,

    women and men of marginalised communities. We carry out our responsibilities with the support of partnersand friends who provide their invaluable assistance in helping these communities move towards a better future.

    In the following pages, we will present you with a brief outline of the state of affairs in Vatsalya in the year

    2011-12. We begin with the statements of vision and mission of Vatsalya as an organization:

    Vatsalya UdayanOur residential child care program for orphaned and abandoned children completed 10 years this year. At

    Vatsalya Udayan, while our efforts are to provide children with a safe, healthy and enabling atmosphere, we

    also focus on their all-round personality development. At the time we find and pick up children from the

    streets, they have a very hostile and negative attitude towards society. They also tend to believe that they are

    victims of an evil destiny and have no future in the adult world that has been abusive towards them. We

    invest in changing this mindset, as having a positive attitude is an essential prerequisite to moving towards a

    successful and happy future. We use various methods to help them transform themselves into positive-

    thinking, forward-looking, happy young individuals. Our intensive focus is on Yoga, Art Therapy, Animal

    Assisted Psycho-therapy, Sports, exposure to Literature and Science, the development of different livelihood

    and life skills. In Yoga, we focus on self-restraint, life-regulating moral rules and observances, fixing the mind

    on the Supreme and absorption of self. In Art Therapy, we use Music, Dance, Creative Art-work and Story-

    telling. In Animal-Assisted Psycho-therapy, we have used horses, dogs, cows and rabbits. Massage Therapy is

    a combination of Acupressure and Reiki. Counselling is primarily based on listening and is absolutely devoid of

    preaching and arguing. Sports are played and promoted generously while the development of skills helps

    children discover their true talents. The international volunteer program is one of the most important aspects

    of our residential care program wherein volunteers from all over the world come and contribute in many

    extraordinary ways to the transformation that happens in the lives of children we serve. They bring not only a

    great positive energy but also add a multicultural richness to raising our children. At Vatsalya Udayan, our

    basic focus is on making children happy, as once they are in that state, what is desirable becomes inevitable.

    Through interventions based on emotional, spiritual, intellectual, and professional development, Vatsalya staff

    work to create a safe, nurturing environment for children in need who would not otherwise have access to

    opportunities that would better their lives.

    Statistics: Vatsalya Udayan is our first and major intervention that is running in its 11th year now. Ourresidential campus has seen a large number of children who were lost, runaway or abandoned by their families

    and a good number of them now have been reunited with their families and are reintegrated back in to society

    and are living a normal healthy life. Through Vatsalya Udayan, we have rehabilitated, repatriated and

    supported in different ways565 children so far. This year, we had 21 new children sent to us by various

    child welfare agencies, 17 out of whom were reclaimed by their families. Many of these children werecaptured under the anti begging law of the state and their parents reclaimed them back with a promise to not

    send them for begging again. Remaining4 are AIDS orphans and would continue to live under the care and

    protection of Vatsalya till they are 18. Currently 48 children are living at Vatsalya Udayan. In the

    Life is celebrated with joy and fervour at Vatsalya! Children are taught to respect tradition and yet be modern in their thinking.

    Vatsalya Udayan is a place that protects the vulnerable and nurtures talent, aspirations and values. The children who leave at 18 are in

    a osition to not onl take care o themselves but also SUPPORT some o those in need!

    Vatsalya Shiksha NiketanRecognising the need and value of a proper need-based education for the children it serves, Vatsalya started its

    own school in 2011. It is meant to cover the children who live on its premises as well as for those living in

    surrounding villages. The school was built with financial support from friends all over the world who donated

    for constructing a proper school building, the drinking water facility and transport for the school. Vatsalya

    Shiksha Niketan is recognised by the state education department and had 88 children in the first year. In the

    year 2012-13 we endeavour to double this figure and also invest in improving the quality of education given tochildren. We do not believe in simply making them literate or able to read, write and count, we aim to identify

    their inherent potential and develop them in such a way that they become self sustained empowered

    individuals. Vatsalya Shiksha Niketan has two other major objectives:

    Value buildingWe work hard towards making children aware, and making them understand and internalise values that truly

    enrich life: perseverance, compassion, service, honesty and respect for all living beings. Vatsalya invests in

    nurturing young minds that are full of creative thoughts and their little hearts full of love and innocence. We

    simply tap their potentials and let them blossom into happy positive dignified individuals. When they grow up,

    they will only spread these virtues and multiply them quite spontaneously.

    Skill buildingWe encourage children to focus on academics and related activities till they are 14 years old. We try different

    methods of teaching and learning so that even those with not much academic potentials can attain a certain

    level of mastery over the 3Rs. Whenthey reach 14, a team of resource persons who have worked closely with

    them prepares a livelihood education plan for the child and the next 4 years are focused on developing those

    skills. Our challenge and goal is that by the time the children are 18, they should have basic education

    (preferably a 10thgrade certificate), a full time job with an extra back up livelihood skill and the ability to live

    on their own with dignity and independence. We have achieved significant success in this effort and almost all

    our children who graduated from Vatsalya are working successfully in IT, the hotel, textile, handicraft and jewellery industries. A few of them are preparing for the Rajasthan Administrative Services, the police and

    armed force personnel and banking services.

    Statistics: The school has88 children in the 2012-13 session and we endeavour to have150 children in the2013-14 session. We try to maintain a ratio of one teacher per 20 students. Since vocational training of 14+

    children is an integral part of our education, we also need to have a trainer per 20 children which is a major

    challenge for us as it significantly increases the per child cost. We are debating as to what should be the vision

    and mission of Vatsalya Shikha Niketan, where do we wish to be in next 5-10 years? We would be very happy

    The foundation stone for Vatsalya Shiksha Niketan was laid by our youngest studentZia in April 2011 and we had the pleasure ofhaving over 25 volunteers fromAustralia, France, Scotland, Spain and USAfor its opening ceremony. The children are given verypersonal attention and we use audio- visual aids to make it an impactful and interesting learning experience for the children. Saturdays

    are fixed for teaching throughskype and Arjun and Aditi from California, USA have been holding regular teaching sessions with ourchildren in this past year. The recent addition of a beautiful School Bus donated bySaga Charitable Trust, UK is a great gift for children

    MAST UpaarjanUnder the title of Upaarjan, Vatsalya started theAmerican India Foundation (AIF) fundedMarket-Aligned Skills Training (MAST) program in Rajasthan. Upaarjan is our livelihood program aimed atempowering the young adults belonging to poor and marginalized communities. The MAST program works

    mainly with high school dropouts aged 18-40 years and equips them with skills and confidence to access entry-

    level jobs in high-growth service industries, while matching the needs of the local economy. To meet market

    needs as well as potentials of prospective trainee candidates, Vatsalya has a fully-operational bakery, fourwell-equipped tailoring units with handicraft sections specialising in Katha work, a jewellery unit specialising

    in Patwa jewellery, a fully operated Take Away food centre , five computer training centres, a carpentry

    unit, a dairy-farming unit and a vehicle repair unit. Our agriculture wing is being strengthened gradually and

    is equipped with modern and traditional farming equipment. Although MAST in general is aimed to cover the

    urban population of young adults, Vatsalya has extended itself to rural areas as well.

    Upaarjan has also especially reached out to the women in rural areas and women of the Muslim community

    who for cultural reasons cannot take employment outside or far from their homes. Under the Upaarjan

    interventions, Vatsalya has not only placed a large number of trained young people, including boys and girls in

    various full time jobs with industry, but has also found home-based employment for women by establishing a

    production house of its own. Over 70 women are working from home as part of the program and earning an

    average income of Rs. 2500 per month by making home products and jewellery.

    All the trainees who complete3 monthsMAST training get a job offering in their hands by the time they

    finish the training. Over 65% join the industry workforce within Jaipur, about 25% start their own work (self

    employed) and remaining join higher training and/or education. MAST trainees have been placed with

    organizations such as ABN-AMRO Bank, Bosch, ICICI group, the Income Tax Office, Torrent Power,

    Subhiksha, Gallops Shopping Mall, Godrej Smart Care, McDonalds, Le Meridien, Caf Coffee day, etc.

    Statistics: Vatsalya has trained a total number of 4026 young adults from October 2009 to November2012 and out of them, 3512 have been placed in full time jobs. In the current year, the female participants

    exceed the male trainees-402 females/200 males. This is a very significant sign of development both insocial and economic context - a large percentage of these women belong to the Muslim community and come

    from rural areas. Traditionally, these women have remained indoors and have not been allowed or encouraged

    to explore their potentials outside of the four walls of their homes. They have not only chosen to do so now but

    are also determined to make a difference in larger economic scenario by starting a production house of their

    own. 67 women are already working as a regular workforce of this production house and the number is going

    to increase THREE times in 2013!

    Upaarjan is touching the lives of marginalised youth and women in a very significant manner. From a completely dull and aimless life

    style, thousands of young people now have entered a phase of exiting opportunities and are working with high aspirations towards high

    goals. Shaheena Baig; a young Muslim girl has emerged as a role model for many others; she is not only placed in a very good position

    herself but is now helping others find a suitable employment for themselves!

    SamvednaSamvedna is our health and education program for the Street Children of Jaipur. This is a mobile van,equipped with staff and other resources, that holds camps regularly in the slums of Jaipur. Almost 90% of the

    Street Children that are seen selling newspapers, incense sticks, etc., on the streets of Jaipur, come from these

    slums. Most often the basic health and education facilities are inaccessible to the children living in slums in

    India. The problem lies with the scarcity of resources as well as with the attitude of the parents and guardians

    of these children. Their parents are often either ignorant or indifferent towards the value of a good education

    and good health for their children. Having spent their own life in drudgery and poverty, they cannot imagine a

    different and better life for their children. Vatsalya attempts to reach out to these communities and change

    their mindset. It holds regular Health and Education Camps in different slum localities in Jaipur wherein

    hundreds of children are contacted and encouraged to pursue a disciplined life that includes going to school,

    maintaining a healthy daily routine and looking forward to a future full of opportunities. Vatsalya does it by

    organizing health camps, networking with institutions that provide education, vocational trainings, health

    and medical services, etc. Vatsalyas effort is not to duplicate the resources and services that already exist but

    to bridge the gap between the services and beneficiaries. Thus while our efforts are to direct and encourage

    them to use the existing resources, we need to invest in the process. Generally a Health and Education Camp

    for children includes the following activities:

    Checking the health and hygiene levels of children

    Giving them a bath, cutting nails, treating hair for lice

    Medical and Health Check up including providing basic medicines and referrals

    Non-formal education session including a quiz, recitation, math, etc

    Art and Craft activities including drawing, painting, paper craft, etc

    Sports and recreation such as a Tug of War, Rope Skipping, Singing and Dance

    Inspirational activities such as sharing life stories of high achievers, great leaders of the world, showing films

    about them, talking about personal dreams and aspirations, and the ways and means to achieve high goals in

    life

    Theme-based talks by experts on topics such as Gender Issues, Womens Rights, Children Rights, Health Rights

    and Right to Education and so on.

    At the end of the camp, the Winner and good performers are given prizes. Besides the children, parents and

    youth are also contacted with the objective of generating awareness and encouraging them to get involved with

    building of their own future and that of their children.

    Statistics: We cover approximately250 children every month through these camps. Thus in 12 years, we have

    covered about21600 street children living in slums of Jaipur.

    A health and education camp is a very exciting and meaningful activity. It appears small in its magnitude and coverage but it is aimed at

    changing the mindset of those living in slums which is the long term goal of this activity. The intervention does introduce them to a world

    of possibilities of living with dignity, health and hygiene and making informed choices to work towards a better future for themselves and

    their children.

    HIV and AIDS interventions for truck drivers and CSWsAs soon as it was identified that India with 2.5 million people suffering from HIV infection in 2007 is the second

    highest afflicted country in the world, the new strategy to curb the infection came into being with NGO and government

    collaborated model to prevent the spread of HIV. At the end of three years, with very determined efforts, by 2010 the

    infection was not only contained but also reduced to 2.2 million. This was made possible through the rigorous workcarried out by NGOs and government jointly and Vatsalya was part of it by serving the bridge population of long

    distance truckers and source population of female sex workers on the highways of Jaipur, Shahpura and Ajmer. In last

    one year our outreach team educated 65,000 of the target population with20,000 of them reporting in our clinics

    for their free treatment in addition2,000have undergone HIV testing in Integrated testing and counseling centers.The innovation to empower the marginalized women, done by Vatsalya has been highly appreciated by UNFPA and

    department of medical and health, government of Rajasthan. Our CEO has been invited to be part of the state academic

    Committee for HIV/AIDS and one of the member of the community empowered by Vatsalya from the Targeted

    Intervention of Ajmer serves on the national board of FSW constituted under the aegis of the National AIDS Control

    Organization, Government of India. Vatsalyas sites are selected as best practices sites bythe State Training Resource

    Center and visited by the World Bank, DFID, UNFPA, NACO, UNAIDS and numerous other recognized bodies as

    demonstration sites. Vatsalya is currently working 800 FSWs out of which 50 are taken for special economicempowerment program by Aanchal Project, U.S.A. & Anoothi India.

    Urban RCH:Vatsalyas Primary Health Care intervention for women and childrenOne of another major partnership with department of health, Government of Rajasthan for maternal and child health

    services is capacity building of Village health and Sanitation Committee members continuously for two years. Vatsalya is

    also opening Urban Reproductive and Child Health center in Jaipur to cater for the population of55,000 in one of the

    urban wards, ward Madrampura, Sanganer. However, to deal with delay in decision making in the government is very

    challenging task.

    Vatsalyas initiative: Even though it is not included in many of the projects, Vatsalya makes special efforts to

    add the perspective of economic empowerment in its interventions. Thus, while the the HIV and AIDS project

    focus on providing medical and health support, Vatsalya has worked intensively to provide alternatives

    Vatsalya has been working with this high risk population (truck drivers and CSWs) to better their life style and provide them much

    needed care as well as alternative livelihood options. WhileTCIF and NACO are our partners in helping them with HIV AIDSprevention and care, Anchal Project, USA(www.anchalproject.org)has been our cherished and long time collaborator in providing theCSWs a decent livelihood alternative. This year, the number of women to benefit from Anchal initiative is going to increase from 15 to

    50!

    our partners and collaborators that we are consciously cutting down costs in many other areas so as to give a

    wholesome and quality education to the children of Vatsalya Shiksha Niketan. We all agree that education is

    the key to end the vicious cycles of all that is so undesirable in our society.
