According to Mark 6:3, James, Joses, Judas, Simon, and at least two sisters. According to an old legend, the sisters were named Mary and Salome.

  • Matthew 3:13-1513 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. 14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? 15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

  • Baptism Why did Jesus insist upon being baptized? Did Jesus have any sins to confess? - He was sinless2 Cor 5:21; 1 Pet 2:221 John 3:5; John 14:3; Isa 53:12 At Johns baptism, Jesus is declaring publicly His identity with the sinner. This is His formal opening for His ministry: - The Father, through the voice; - The Holy Spirit, descending dove-like; - The Son being baptized.

  • Matthew 3:16-1716 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: 17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

  • Matthew 4:1-21 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.

  • Jesus Is TemptedThe word tempt has a twofold meaning: 1. "Incite or entice to evil; seduce." There is something in each of us which causes us to yield to evil. This was not true of Jesus. "...the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me" (John 14:30). He was "...holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners..." (Heb. 7:26). So the temptation for Jesus had to be different from that which would cause man to fall, in that it needed to be a much greater temptation.2. "Test." God does not tempt men with evil according to James 1:13. Yet, we are told "...God did tempt Abraham..." (Gen. 22:1). This means that God was testing the faith of Abraham.

  • Jesus Is TemptedJohn 14:30 (KJV) 30 Hereafter I will not talk much with you: for the prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.

Hebrews 7:26-27 (KJV) 26 For such an high priest became us, who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; 27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people's: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.

  • Jesus Is TemptedJames 1:13 (KJV) 13 Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

Genesis 22:1 (KJV) 1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

  • Matthew 4:3-43 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

  • Deuteronomy 8:33 And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.

  • Matthew 4:5-75 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

  • Deuteronomy 6:1616 Ye shall not tempt the LORD your God, as ye tempted him in Massah. Massah : Exodus 17:7 (KJV) Ex 7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

  • Matthew 4:8-108 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

  • Deut. 6:13 and 10:20Deuteronomy 6:13 (KJV) 13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name. Deuteronomy 10:20 (KJV) 20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.

  • Three Dimensions 1) The desire of the flesh (appeal to the appetite).2) Lust of the eyes (appeal to our aesthetic nature). 3) The pride of life (appeal to our spiritual pride).

***Genesis 28:10 (KJV) Ge 10 And Jacob went out from Beersheba, and went toward Haran.

*******Why was Jesus baptized? There may be several answers, but the primary reason is stated right here: "For thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness." Jesus is identifying Himself completely with sinful mankind. Isaiah had prophesied that He would be numbered with the transgressors (see Isa. 53:12). Here is a King who identifies Himself with His subjects. Actually, baptism means identification, and I believe identification was the primary purpose for the baptism of the Lord Jesus. There was a second reason Jesus was baptized. Water baptism is symbolic of death. His death was a baptism. You remember that He said to James and John when they wanted to be seated on His right hand and on His left hand in the Kingdom, "Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?" (Matt. 20:22). Christ's death was a baptism. He entered into death for you and for me.*He did not come seeking baptism from John for reason of repentance. Instead, He intended to fulfill some higher purpose of "all righteousness" through the immersion. In this instance, Yeshua seems to use the term "all righteousness" to refer to 'the proper way of doing things: order.Part of the righteous protocol requires a prophet to arise and declare the Messiah. Just as the prophet Samuel anointed David, the prophet Nathananointed Solomon, and a prophet from the school of Elisha anointed Jehu, so too a prophet must identify, declare, and anoint the Messiah. Moreover, the righteous protocol of the scriptures requires the prophet Elijah to precede the Messiah and herald His arrival.

*Here we have a manifestation of the Trinity. As the Lord Jesus is coming out of the water, the Spirit of God descends upon Him like a dove, and the Father speaks from heaven. The Father says, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." The Lord Jesus is now identified with His people. The words "with whom I am well pleased" directly allude to the messianic Servant Song of Isaiah 42:1: "Behold, My Servant, whom I uphold; My chosen one in whom My soul delights. I have put My Spirit upon Him ... (Isaiah 42: 1). "With whom I am well pleased is a Greek equivalent for the Hebrew idiom, "In whom My soul delights.

*Jesus is now to be tested. You may wonder could Jesus have fallen? The answer has to be an emphatic no! He could not have fallen. If Jesus could have fallen, then you and I do not have a sure Savior at all. In a similar way, the Lord Jesus Christ was tested to demonstrate that He was exactly who He claimed to be. The exact reason the Lord Jesus was tested was to prove, to demonstrate, that He could not be broken down. His testing, therefore, was greater than ours. *Many different kinds. Extended fasts, second and third days are tough, yet after third day, it gets easier for about another 37 days. Around the 40th day you will be desperately in need of food in a medical sense. Hunger always leaves after a few days of fast and returns after a long fast of about 40 days or when all toxic poisons have been expelled from the body. Jesus' experience of 40 days of fasting in the wilderness corresponds to Israel's experience of 40 years of testing in the wilderness *[If] is not conditional, as in prove you are. Rather used in a rhetorical sense, since you are. If should be translated since, not if. What is wrong with turning rocks into bread? The issue is not Him providing for His needs, but rather the Father's Will. Jesus discerned that it was not the Father's Will for Him to take this path. For us, we can't turn rocks into bread so we are not tempted by this incident. However, you are never tempted to do something which you are not capable of doing. You won't stumble in your weak suit; you will stumble in your strong suit. For example, Peter - his strongest capability was boldness and courage. Where did Peter fail? Lack of Courage, the night Jesus was betrayed he denied Jesus three times! The way we fall is through PRIDE.

****if = since, as in since you are the son God[every word] Not just New Testament, not just the Psalms... Every word. Not every allegory, or every paraphrase. If we are going to live by every word we have to know what those words are.

This is the same kind of temptation that came to Eve. The first one was physical. She saw that the tree was good for food (see Gen. 3:6). The Lord Jesus was told to turn stones to bread. 1John 2:15-16 says that such temptation for the Christian is the "...lust of the flesh.Jesus quotes from Deuteronomy 8:3.

**The Devil is quoting Psalm 91:11-12, although he does not quote it accurately. Now, this is the spiritual temptation. For Eve it was that she saw the fruit was "...to be desired to make one wise..." (Gen. 3:6). For the Christian, it is the "...pride of life..." (1John 2:16). Satan wanted Jesus to test his relationship with God to see if Gods promise of protection would prove true. Satan was quoting Scripture out of context, making it sound as though God protects anyone, even if they attempt to defy natural law. In context, the psalm promises Gods protection for those who, while being in his will and serving him, find themselves in danger. It does not promise protection for artificially created crises in which Christians call to God in order to test his love and care.Life Application New Testament Commentary.Jesus is quoting from Deuteronomy 6:16.**The third testing is psychological. Satan showed Him the kingdoms of the world and their glory. This is a psychological temptation. Man lusts for power. Eve was subjected to the same temptation: "...ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Gen. 3:5). Many of us succumb to this test. The Devil offered the Lord Jesus the kingdoms of this world! Does the Devil have the kingdoms of the world to offer? The Lord Jesus did not challenge his statement that he had the kingdoms of the world to offer. Jesus didn't say to him, "You can't offer Me the kingdoms of the world because you don't have them to give." I assume that the Devil did have them to give. This fact gives us a little different viewpoint of the trouble we are having in the world today. The Devil is running everything! Some Christians tend to fight the evils of communism without realizing that behind communism is Satan and that behind the confusion and turmoil in the world is Satan. Let's remember who our enemy really is. He is a spiritual enemy. He wants to become God. Remember that he said to Jesus, "All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me"!He is quoting Deuteronomy 6:13 and Deuteronomy 10:20. *We see that our Lord answered each time with Scripture. Certainly, that ought to have a message for all of us. Why is it that many of us are having trouble living the Christian life? May I say this very kindly: It is ignorance of the Word of God. Notice that our Lord always answered by giving the Word of God. I believe that the Word of God has an answer for your particular problem. That doesn't mean that I know the answer for your problem. It doesn't mean that your psychologist or psychiatrist knows the answer for your problem. But God has an answer for your problem, and it is in His Word. That is the reason we should know the Book better than we do.Let me repeat, the Lord Jesus answered Satan every time out of the Word. He did not say, "Well, I think this" or "I believe there is a better way of doing it." He said very definitely that the Word of God says thus and so. He used the Word of God for His answer. And for the child of God, that is enough. The Devil seemed to think it gave good answers because in the next verse we read --***There seems to be a pattern to temptation, as seen here. If we know the pattern we may be able to stand against temptation.
