Application (on request) of the current sensors and protection device self-suppliedPR521 (suitable for installation in unmanned plants)

General informationThe VD4/R series of medium voltage vacuum cir-cuit-breakers for indoor installation are constructedusing the separate pole technique. Each pole has a vacuum interrupter inside it which, thanks to a special production process, is incorpo-rated in the resin directly during the cylindermoulding stage. This construction technique ensure protection ofthe vacuum interrupter against impact, dust andcondensation phenomena. The operating mechanism is the ESH type withstored energy and free release, with opening andclosing operations independent of the operator. The ESH operating mechanism is already widelyused in all the HD4 series circuit-breakers withfront operating mechanism and HD4/R with lateraloperating mechanism.Remote control of the circuit-breaker is possible bymeans of applying special electrical accessories(geared motor, shunt opening release, etc.).The operating mechanism, the three poles and thecurrent sensors (if provided) are mounted on a me-tallic frame without wheels. Construction is particu-larly compact, sturdy and of limited weight. The circuit-breakers in the VD4/R series are“sealed for life” pressure systems (IEC 62271-100and CEI 71-1 Standards).

Versions availableVD4/R circuit-breakers are available in the fixedversion with right lateral operating mechanism. On request they can be fitted with current sensorsand PR521 microprocessor-based protection de-vice.Specific versions are available for UniAir, UniMixand UniSwitch switchboards. In the 24 kV versions with 230 mm pole centredistance, only two current sensors can bemounted (on the lateral poles).

Fields of applicationThe VD4/R series circuit-breakers are used in allapplications for medium voltage secondary distri-bution and in MV/LV transformer substations in fac-tories, workshops in the industrial sector in gen-eral, and in the service sector. Thanks to application (on request) of the PR521self-supplied microprocessor-based overcurrentrelease, HD4/R circuit-breakers are suitable foruse in unmanned MV/LV transformer substationsand without auxiliary power supply.

Other important characteristics of the PR521 de-vices are:– trip precision– wide setting range– operation guaranteed even with single-phase

power supply– constancy of characteristics and operating reli-

ability even in highly polluted ambients– single and simultaneous adjustment of all three

phases– no limit to the rated breaking capacity (thanks to

the current sensors) and to the short-time with-stand current of the circuit-breaker.

For further information, please consult chapter 3.

Protection deviceOn request, the circuit-breakers in the VD4/R se-ries with rated voltage up to 24 kV can be fittedwith self-supplied PR521 type microprocessor-based overcurrent protection device, available inthe following types:– PR521 (50-51): provides the protection function

against overload (51) and against instantaneousand delayed short-circuit (50);

– PR521 (50-51-51N): provides the protectionfunction against overload (51), againstinstantaneous and delayed short-circuit (50) andagainst earth fault (51N).

The current sensors are available in four rated cur-rent values and cover all the circuit-breaker fieldsof application (for the protection fields, please seechap. 3).

DESCRIPTION

Standards and approvalsThe VD4/R circuit-breakers comply with the IEC62271, CEI 17-1 file 1375, and CENELEC HD 348S6 Standards, as well as those of the major indus-trialised countries. They have undergone the testsindicated below and ensure service safety and reli-ability of the apparatus in all installations.• Type tests: heating, withstand insulation at

industrial frequency and atmospheric impulse,short-time and peak withstand current, me-chanical life, making and breaking capacity ofshort-circuit currents.

• Individual tests: insulation with voltage atindustrial frequency in the main circuits, insula-tion of the auxiliary and control circuits, meas-urement of the main circuit resistance andmechanical and electrical operation.

Service SafetyThanks to the complete range of mechanical andelectrical locks (on request), safe distributionswitchboards can be constructed with the VD4/Rcircuit-breakers.The locking devices have been studied to preventincorrect operations and carry out inspection of theinstallations whilst guaranteeing maximum opera-tor safety. All the operating, control and signalling devices arelocated on the front of the circuit-breaker.The anti-pumping device is always provided on theactuator.

AccessoriesThe VD4/R circuit-breakers have a complete rangeof accessories which means all installation require-ments can be satisfied. The operating mechanism is of the same type forthe whole series and has a standardised range ofaccessories and spare parts which are easy toidentify and order. Use and service of the appara-tus are simple and require limited use of re-sources.

ESH operating mechanism• Single operating mechanism for the whole

series.• The same accessories for all the types of circuit-

breaker.• Fixed reference points to simplify assembly and

replacement of the accessories.• Accessory cabling with socket and plug.• Suitable for the rapid 0-0,3s-CO–15s-CO

SPECIFIC PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS

Resistance to vibrationsThe VD4/R circuit-breakers are unaffected by me-chanical vibrations or those due to electromagneticeffect.

Electromagnetic compatibilityThe VD4/R circuit-breakers fitted with PR521 elec-tronic microprocessor-based protection device en-sure operation free of unwarranted trips, even inthe presence of interference caused by electronicapparatus, by atmospheric disturbances or by elec-trical discharges.Furthermore, the apparatus does not generate in-terference with other electronic equipment in thevicinity of the installation. The above is in compli-ance with the EN 50081-2, 50082-2 and 60694Standards, as well as with the European EEC 89/336 and subsequent Directives regarding electro-magnetic compatibility (EMC), and the releasesare EC marked as complying with these.

TropicalizationThe VD4/R circuit-breakers are manufactured incompliance with the strictest regulations for use inhot-humid-saline climates. All the most important metal components aretreated against corrosive factors according to UNI3564-65 Standards environmental class C.Galvanisation is carried out in accordance with UNIISO 2081 Standards, classification code Fe/ Zn 12,with a thickness of 12x10 -6 m, protected by a con-version layer mainly consisting of chromates incompliance with the UNI ISO 4520 Standards. These construction characteristics mean theVD4/ R series of circuit-breakers comply withclimate graph 8 of the IEC 60721-2-1 Standards.

AltitudeIt is a known fact that the insulating property of airdecreases as the altitude increases. This phenomenon must therefore always be takeninto account during the design stage of the insulat-ing components of apparatus to be installed over1000 m above sea level. In this case a correctioncoefficient must be considered, which can be takenfrom the graph to the side, built up on the basis ofthe indications in the IEC 62271-100 Standards. The following example is a clear interpretation ofthe indications given above.

Example• Installation altitude: 2000 m• Rated service voltage of 12 kV• Industrial frequency withstand voltage: 28 kV

rms• Impulse withstand voltage: 75 kVp• Ka factor, which can be taken from the graph =

1.13.

Considering the above parameters, the apparatusmust withstand (on test at zero altitude, i.e. at sealevel):– industrial frequency withstand voltage:

28 x 1,13 = 31,6 kVrms

– impulse withstand voltage:75 x 1,13 = 84,7 kVp.

From the above, it can be deduced that for installa-tions at an altitude of 2000 m above sea level, with12 kV service voltage, apparatus must be providedwith 17.5 kV rated voltage, characterised by insula-tion levels at industrial frequency of 38 kVrms with95 kVp impulse withstand voltage.

Graph for determining the Ka correctionfactor according to the altitude

H = altitude in metres;m = value referred to industrial frequency and to the

atmospheric impulse and between phasewithstand voltages.

The anti-pumping device avoids this situation, en-suring that each closing operation is only followedby a single opening operation and that there is noclosing operation after this. To obtain a further clos-ing operation, the closing input must be releasedand then relaunched.Furthermore, the anti-pumping device only allowscircuit-breaker closure if the following conditionsare present at the same time:– operating mechanism springs fully charged– opening pushbutton and/or shunt opening re-

lease (-MO1) not enabled– main circuit-breaker contacts open and at their

run end.

Ordering: for availability and ordering of spareparts, please contact our Service, specifying thecircuit-breaker serial number.

Environmental protection programmeThe VD4/R circuit-breakers are manufactured inaccordance with the ISO 14000 Standards (Guide-lines for environmental management). The production processes are carried out in com-pliance with the Standards for environmental pro-tection in terms of reduction in energy consump-tion as well as in raw materials and production ofwaste materials.Assessment of the environmental impact of the lifecycle of the product (LCA - Life Cycle Assess-ment),obtained by minimising energy consumption andoverall raw materials of the product, became aconcrete matter during the design stage by meansof targeted selection of the materials, processesand packing.Production techniques which prepare the productsfor simple dismantling and separation of the com-ponents are used during manufacture of the circuit-breakers. This is to allow maximum recycling at theend of the useful life cycle of the apparatus. The Environmental Management System of themedium voltage apparatus production facility iscertified by an external independent organisation.

Anti-pumping deviceThe ESH operating mechanism on VD4/R circuit-breakers (in all versions) is fitted with a mechanicalanti-pumping device which prevents re-closing dueto either electrical or mechanical input.Should both the closing input and any one of theopening input be active at the same time, therewould be a continuous succession of opening andclosing operations.

(*) Replacement can onlybe carried out bytrained personnel and/or in our workshops.

SPECIFIC PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS

PR521 protection deviceThe PR521 unit carries out the following functions:• PR521 - LSI: overcurrent protection (code ANSI

50-51), two-phase or three-phase according tothe whether it is connected to two or threecurrent sensors;

• PR521 - LSIG: like PR521-LSI plus earth faultprotection (code ANSI 51N) (by means ofvectorial summation inside the three phase sen-sors or by means of an external earth fault toroidand two or three current sensors).

Apart from supplying the current signal, the currentsensors also provide the energy required for op-eration of the unit.

PR521 with LSI protection functions. PR521 with LSIG protection functions.

The unit is self-supplied and its correct operation isguaranteed in the presence of a current higherthan or equal to 20% of the rated value on at leastone of the phases fitted with current sensors (0.2 xIn).Microprocessor-based digital technology is used inits construction. The unit causes the circuit-breaker, in which it isintegrated, to open, by means of an opening sole-noid (-MO3 - see accessory kit no. 13), whichacts directly on the operating mechanism of theapparatus.

Current sensors (C.S.)The PR521 unit can be used with current sensorssupplied by ABB with the following characteristics:

Rated primary current In = 40 A

In = 80 A

In = 250 A

In = 1250 A

Rated secondary current In = 1 A.

To select the sensor, enable the corresponding dip-switch. If, by chance, several sensors are selected, the alarm LED flashes to provide an error signal. The current sensors can be mounted on board theVD4/R circuit-breakers with rated voltage up to 24kV. The 24 kV circuit-breakers with 230 mm polecentre distance can only mount two current sen-sors on board.

External earth fault toroidThe PR521 unit can be used with any externaltoroid to determine the earth fault current as longas it has the following characteristics:

Rated primary current any

Rated secondary current 1 A

Performance 1 VA

Class of precision, ultimate precision factor Cl. 3 or higher

Use of the external toroid for determining the earthfault current is recommended when very low set-ting values of the 51N threshold are required (lessthan 0.45 times the rated current - In - of the cur-rent sensors). The use of the above-mentioned toroid is compul-sory when protection 51N is to be provided with 24kV circuit-breakers and 230 mm pole centre dis-tance.

Release actuatorThe PR521 release unit carries out release of theoperating mechanism in the case of the protectionfunctions tripping, by means of an opening sole-noid (-MO3 - see accessory kit no. 13).

Self-supplyOperation of the PR521 unit is guaranteed by theself-supply circuit. The minimum value of phasecurrent needed for operation is 0.2 x In.This circuit is able to withstand:– overload: 1.5 x In continuous– overload: 6 x In for 200 sec.– overload: 25 kA for 1 sec. (short-time withstand

overcurrent of the circuit-breaker).

InputsAnalogue inputs• Inputs for current sensors.

The current sensors which supply the signalsproportional to the current circulating in thephases and the energy required for self-supplyof the apparatus are connected to the PR521unit by means of these three inputs.

• Input for external earth fault toroid. The external earth fault toroid whose signal isdirectly proportional to the earth fault current isconnected to the PR521 unit by means of thisinput. This transformer does not supply the en-ergy for self-supplied operation of the relay. That input must be made using a braidedscreened telephone cable whose braiding mustbe earthed on the metallic box of the PR521(please refer to the wiring diagram enclosed withthe circuit-breaker).Because of EMC problems, the earthing connec-tion of the braiding must be as solid and short aspossible.

Binary input for control function• Input for circuit-breaker remote opening.

This input makes it possible to open the circuit-breaker remotely, exploiting the energy, ifavailable, supplied by the current sensors. This input must be made using a screenedtelephone cable whose braiding must be earthedon the metallic box of the PR521 (please refer tothe wiring diagram enclosed with the circuit-breaker).By connecting an external contact withoutpotential (e.g. the contact of a Buchholz relay) tothe special input connector, it is possible tocontrol circuit-breaker opening remotely throughthe PR521 release when the primary currentexceeds the value of 0.2 x In on at least onephase fitted with a current sensor.

Signalling output by means of closing contactAn output made by means of a bistable relay isavailable (it keeps the state even with a power cutand until the RESET operation), with closingcontacts without potential, through which the relaytrip signal is supplied.

After protection trip and circuit-breaker opening, this contact can be reset in two different ways:– with phase current higher than 0.2 x In, auto-

matic resetting takes place when the circuit-breaker closes;

– with phase current lower than 0.2 x In and theprotection unit off (even with the circuit-breakeropen), by means of the front bushing for RESETas defined in the “Test and reset function”.

N.B. This signalling contact is not enabled if a remote cir-cuit-breaker opening command is given or for the Testoperation of release functionality.

Protection functionsThe PR521 unit carries out the followingprotections:• PR521 - LSI: phase overcurrent protection

(instantaneous, with adjustable delay, withdefinite and fixed time)

• PR521 - LSIG: like PR521-LSI plus earth faultovercurrent protection (with adjustable delay).

The thresholds and trip times an be selecteddirectly by setting some Dip-switches on the frontof the unit. For fixed time protection, the trip time is given bythe following relationship:

For definite time protection, the relationshipbetween trip time and overcurrent is given by thefollowing formula:

Earth fault overcurrent protection withadjustable delay (External Toroid)The earth fault current is calculated as the vectorialsum of the three primary phase currents. This sum is made by means of an external toroid(which processes the primary phase currents)installed directly on the power cables and there-fore, it is only possible to mount two currentsensors on board the apparatus (with network withinsulated neutral). This solution is compulsory for24 kV circuit-breakers with 230 mm pole centredistance. Selection of this method is carried out bymeans of front Dip-switches.The following settings are possible:

• 14 current threshold values (Io>) (1)

0.05 0.10 0.15 0.20

0.25 0.30 0.35 0.40

0.45 0.50 0.55 0.60

0.65 0.70 x In

• 16 trip times (to>) (2)

0.00 (3) 0.05 0.10 0.15

0.20 0.25 0.30 0.35

0.40 0.45 0.50 0.55

0.60 0.65 0.70 0.75 s

(1) The tolerance over thethreshold values is ±15%.

(2) The tolerance over thetrip times is ± 20% or± 30 ms.

(3) Curve with intentionaldelay nil added.

Self-protection curve with fixed timeA self-protection curve of the electronic relay isavailable which intervenes at 20 x In with a fixedtime of 1 sec. The self-protection processes thepeak value of the phase current.

No type of adjustment is possible and the protec-tion cannot be excluded . This means that self-protection of the unit is carried out for phasecurrents over 20 x In without limiting the circuit-breaker breaking capacity (short-time withstandcurrent of 1 s).

The protection can be excluded. The Io> protec-tion processes the peak value of the earth faultcurrent over the whole operating interval.

LED optical signalling functionThe release has an optical indicator on the front(operating from 0.22 x In of phase), able to signalthe events shown in the table.

TEST and RESET functionBy means of the TT2 accessory (Test Unit whichcan be supplied on request), it is possible to carryout the overall TEST of relay release operation(electronic part and -MO3 opening solenoid) aswell as RESET of the “release tripped due to over-current signalling contact”. The latter function isonly enabled when the protection unit is completelyoff.

Auto-resetThe auto-reset function (automatic reset) forrelease tripped signalling takes place on re-closing of the circuit-breaker with primary currentequal to or higher than 0.2 x In on at least onephase fitted with a current sensor.

Incompatibility

The combinations of circuits given in the figuresbelow are not possible on the same circuit-breaker:

10-41 24-25

31-33 26-27

10-42-43-44-45

22-23

Page 53: VD4/R - ABBEN)-_1VCP000037.pdf · 5 1 Versions available VD4/R circuit-breakers are available in the fixed version with right lateral operating mechanism. On request they can be fitted

51

5

NotesA) The circuit-breaker is only fitted with the

accessories listed in the order acknowledge-ment.

B) The undervoltage release can be supplied inthe version for power supply with voltagebranched on the supply side of the circuit-breaker or from an independent source. Theuse of both the instantaneous and electronictime-delay device undervoltage release isallowed (outside the circuit-breaker). Circuit-breaker closing is only allowed with therelease energised (the lock on closing isachieved mechanically).

On request, the contact in fig. 24 or the one infig. 25 is available (signalling is permanent).Should there be the same power supply for theshunt closing and undervoltage releases andautomatic circuit-breaker closing on return ofthe auxiliary voltage is required, it is necessaryto introduce a delay of at least 50 ms betweenthe moment of undervoltage release consentand energisation of the shunt closing release. This can be done by means of a circuit outsidethe circuit-breaker including a permanentclosing contact, the contact indicated in fig. 24and a time-delay relay.

C) Check the power available on the auxiliarycircuit to verify the possibility of starting severalmotors for charging the closing springs at thesame time. To avoid excessive absorption, it isnecessary to charge the springs manuallybefore supplying the auxiliary circuit withvoltage.

D) Please see diagram 401530 for the connec-tions between the circuit-breaker auxiliarycircuits and the PR512 microprocessor-basedovercurrent release located in the switchboard.

E) The circuit for controlling continuity of the shuntopening release winding must only be used forthis function. With power supply of less than220V, connect the “Control Coil Continuity”device or a relay or signalling lamp whichabsorbs a current not exceeding 20 mA.With power supply at or higher than 220V,connect a relay or signalling lamp whichabsorbs a current not exceeding 10 mA.Other uses jeopardise soundness of the re-lease.

F) The -F60 circuit-breaker in fig. 21 must alwaysbe provided when there is a spring-chargingmotor supplied at 24V d.c. In the case of open-ing caused by a fault in the motor, it is alwaysnecessary to complete spring charging bymeans of the special handle before carryingout manual resetting.

G) If you want to use the -BI/O transformer, remove the bridges 24-25-26 of terminal board-XV.

H) When fig. 9 is required, contact -B/15 is nolonger available for figs. 31-33. If fig. 9 is notrequired, contact -B/15 can be used by elimi-nating the connection in parallel with contactQ5. When fig. 7 is required, contact -B/1 is nolonger available for figs. 31-33. If fig. 7 is notrequired, contact -B/13 can be used by elimi-nating the connection in parallel with contact -B1.
