In an age of connectivity, enabled by the widespread availability and decreasing cost of satellite communica-tion links between vessels and shore, there is an ever growing need for shipowners and operators to get in-stant access to crucial data related to vessel operations. VDR OnDemand is the fi rst of a series of remote ac-cess capabilities by Danelec Marine, and it facilitates access from shore to the VDR (Voyage Data Recorder) onboard a vessel.

The solution is powered by Danelec Vessel Remote Server hardware (VRI) hardware module which serves as a proxy server and fi rewall to the VDR. The remote server box connects to the vessel’s existing network/communication infrastructure, and through the Dane-lec VDR Remote Access Tool software application ena-bles access to the VDR from a PC on shore for transfer and replay of recorded VDR data, system diagnostics and even remote confi guration.

EQUIPMENT ONBOARD VESSEL

SHIPMANAGER ONSHORE Typical size of downloaded data set:• VDR data transfer: 12 MB + 5 MB/

min of recorded data• Pre-APT: 30 MB ( 5 mins sample )• VDR dump for Support: 2 MB• Alarm analysis: 0.6 MB

The data pull functionality of the VDR OnDemand plug and play solution allows shore o ces to log on and download data from a Danelec VDR by remotely connecting via an IP link to the system.

Alarm Analysis & VDR Dump for Support

Pre-APT & Remote Confi guration

VDR Data Transfer • Emergency transfer of recorded VDR data to shore• Customize duration and o set of the data set to download• Downloaded data fully playable, even with poor connection

In the event of an onboard accident or emergency, the shipmanager can use VDR OnDemand to request transfer of recorded VDR data for a given time period for instant replay ashore, saving valuable time in re-sponding to an incident. Both duration and o set of the download-able VDR data can be custom set (e.g. if an incident happened 2 hours and 5 minutes ago, o setting the download to 2 hours compared to present time ensures getting data related to the incident as fast as possible). In case the connection to the VDR is lost during the data transfer, even partially downloaded data fi les can be replayed.

• Diagnose status of VDR and connected sensors remotely• Prepare for APT and service attendance while the vessel is at sea• Remote confi guration of the VDR from shore

For the mandatory VDR Annual Performance Tests (APTs), service companies or ship-managers can use VDR OnDemand to perform diagnostics of the VDR and all connect-ed shipboard systems through a data sample while the vessel is at sea. This speeds up the actual APT when the ship arrives in port, and enables the service technicians to be prepared with the appropriate tools and spare parts to meet the ship on arrival, thus the risk of an unsuccessful APT which may result in a second attendance can be avoid-ed. If extended access to the VDR is enabled by the vessel’s crew, even remote confi gu-ration of the system is possible from shore without physically attending the vessel.

• Run analysis of alarms from shore• Remote “health check” of the system• Troubleshoot issues before service call

For routine check of the VDR system and connected sensors, an analysis of alarms and alerts can be run remotely from shore via VDR OnDemand. The report fi le is small in size in order to keep data communication costs to the minimum. Should a service issue arise, VDR OnDemand can also be used to download a log fi le containing essential data of the VDR system. Based on these data, a “health check” of the system can be performed by a service company and eventually trou-bleshooting of the problem can be initiated before the service call.
