    HISTORY OF UNITED KINGDOM

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as theUnited Kingdom, the UK orBritain, is a sovereign state located off the northwesterncoast of continental Europe. It is an island country, spanning Great Britain, thenortheast part of Ireland, and many small islands. Northern Ireland is the only part ofthe UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this landborder, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the EnglishChannel and the Irish Sea. The largest island, Great Britain, is linked to France by the

    Channel Tunnel.

The United Kingdom is a unitary state consisting of fourcountries: England, NorthernIreland, Scotland and Wales. It is governed by a parliamentary system with its seat ofgovernment in London, the capital, but with three devolved national administrationsin Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh, the capitals of Northern Ireland, Wales andScotland respectively. The UK is a constitutional monarchy with Queen Elizabeth II asthe head of state. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are Crown Dependenciesand not part of the UK, but form a federacy with it. The UK has fourteen overseas

territories, all remnants of the British Empire, which at its height in 1922 encompassedalmost a quarter of the world's land surface, the largest empire in history. Britishinfluence can continue to be observed in the language, culture and legal systems ofmany of its former colonies. Queen Elizabeth II remains the head of theCommonwealth of Nations and head of state of each of the Commonwealth realms.

HISTORY OF IRELANDThe history of Ireland began with the first known settlementin Ireland around 8000 BC, when hunter-gatherers arrived fromGreat Britain and continental Europe, probably via a landbridge.

The earliest inhabitants of Ireland, people of a mid-Stone Age, or Mesolithic, culture, arrivedsometime after 8000 BC, when the climate had become more hospitable following the retreat ofthe polar icecaps. About 4000 BC agriculture was introduced from the South West continent, leading to the establishment of a high Neolithic culture, characterized by the appearance ofpottery, polished stone tools, What little is known of pre-Christian Ireland comes from a fewreferences in Roman writings, Irish poetry and myth, and archaeology. rectangular wooden

houses and communal megalithic tombs, some of which are huge stone monuments like thePassage Tombs ofNewgrange, Knowth and Dowth, many of them astronomically aligned (mostnotably, Newgrange). Four main types of megalithic tomb have been identified: Portal Tombs,Court Tombs, Passage Tombs and Wedge Tombs. In Leinster and Munster individual adult maleswere buried in small stone structures, called cists, under earthen mounds and wereaccompanied by distinctive decorated pottery. This culture apparently prospered, and the islandbecame more densely populated. Towards the end of the Neolithic new types of monumentsdeveloped, such as circular embanked enclosures and timber, stone and post and pit circles

    HISTORY OF ITALY

    The Mediterranean peninsula

Italy, meaning the entire peninsula south of the Alps, is known assuch from about the 1st century BC. Several centuries earlier, when the name first appears, it is used only of the area in theextreme south - the toe of the peninsula.

In the 1st century BC Italy is under the control of a single power,Rome, and it will remain so until the 5th century AD. The peninsulaagain becomes a political entity, as the modern nation of Italy, in1861. In all other periods of prehistory and history this mostdesirable of territories has been shared and fought over by

    numerous rival groups.

ISTORY OF SWITZERLAND Since 1848, the Swiss Confederation has been a

federal state of relatively autonomous cantons, some of which have a history of confederacythat goes back more than 700 years, arguably

putting them among the world's oldest survivingrepublics. For the time before 1291, this articlesummarizes events taking place on the territoryof modern Switzerland. From 1291, it focusesmainly on the fates of the Old Swiss

Confederacy, at first consisting of only threecantons (Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden) in whatis now central Switzerland, and graduallyexpanding until it encompassed the present-day area of Switzerland in 1815.
