DIRECTOR’S NOTE

When writing about Tenessee Williams and Marlon Brando, the director Elia Kazan said that the talent of geniuses was merely the scab on the wounds they had been dealt in their early childhoods. This would mean that humans have an almost alchemistic ability to turn trauma into something glorious. NEVER LOOK AWAY is a look into that alchemy. Through the prism of the historical traumas of my own country, Germany.

THE DIRECTOR

Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck, born 1973 in Cologne, studied Directing at the Munich Film Academy. His first student short film DOBERMANN (1998) won the Max Ophüls Award and the Shocking Shorts Award among many others. His first feature as writer and director, THE LIVES OF OTHERS (2006) won the German and European Film Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Lead Actor, and the BAFTA, David di Donatello and Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film. His second feature, THE TOURIST (2010), was nominated for three Golden Globes in the Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress categories. He is a member of the Bavarian and Northrhine Westfalian Orders of Merit, was elected a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2013 and serves as a Trustee of the American Academy in Berlin.

DIRECTOR’S NOTE

I am interested in and impressed by Liv and Malteʼs story, the story of the ”most beautiful couple“, who are brave and open-minded enough to confront the consequences of a sexual assault. They soon push their limits, which they, two well-reflected and open-hearted human beings, neglect to accept for a long time, until they can finally accept their fear and deal with it.

I believe to know that most people do not have the opportunity to cope with their emotions such as depression and anger after such an assault. One is forced to act, if he or she does not want to lose his or her life, work, or relationship. Liv and Malte are not an exception to this rule. And they act on it. Each of them in their own way. To watch them do so touches and worries me at the same time. I am touched because their actions reveal a strong will for life and their relationship. And it worries me because they will inevitably fall short.

Although it deals with trauma management, the film is not supposed to be traumatising in itself. The full life – happiness – anger – tenderness – before and after this horrible experience – shall be relived again and again. For in a story, happiness is best told in the face of great pain. And vice versa.

THE DIRECTOR

Sven Taddicken was born in 1974 in Hamburg and studied directing in Ludwigsburg from 1996-2002. His shorts were shown and awarded at numerous festivals worldwide, including a nomination for the Student Oscar® in 2000 and the German Short Film Award in 2003. In 2000 he received the Caligari-scholarship. 2004 followed the grant of the Akademie der Künste Berlin ”Junge Akademie“, and 2007 the grant of the Villa Aurora/Los Angeles. His first feature MY BROTHER THE VAMPIRE received several awards at national and international film festivals (Brooklyn, Rotterdam, London). His 2nd feature EMMAʼS BLISS was released all over Europe, won many festivals and gained 4 nominations for the German Film Awards. His 3rd feature, the elaborate historical drama 12 PLACES WITHOUT A HEAD told the story about the adventures of the legendary pirate Klaus Störtebeker. In 2016, his feature film ORIGINAL BLISS starring Martina Gedeck and Ulrich Tukur won two awards in Karlovy Vary and was released widely all over Germany.

Two young teachers, Malte and Liv, are spending their summer holiday on the Mediterranean coast, when they are suddenly attacked by three young men. The incident escalates and Liv is assaulted. Two years later Malte and Liv are not only still together, but are demonstrating an amazing strength in dealing with the traumatic experience. They are determined that it will not tear them apart. But when Malte has a chance encounter with one of

the perpetrators, he finds himself driven to seek revenge and sets out in pursuit. However, once he is facing the longed for confrontation, he realises that the situation has gotten out of control once again. He hasnʼt told Liv, he didnʼt call the police and now the couple‘s fragile relationship, which they have fought so hard to preserve, is put to the test once more.

THE DIRECTOR

Sandra Nettelbeck was born in Hamburg. With the short film A CERTAIN GRACE she graduated at San Francisco State University. From 1992 she worked as a journalist and freelance producer/editor in Hamburg. LOOSE ENDS was her debut on German TV in 1994, two years later she wrote and directed MAMMAMIA which won Best Screenplay and Best Film at the Max-Ophüls-Festival in Saarbrücken. With her debut theatrical feature MOSTLY MARTHA, which had its world premiere on the Piazza Grande in Locarno, she gained international success in 2001. In 2004 Sandra Nettelbeck realized her first childrenʼs movie SERGEANT PEPPER, a turbulent comedy about the friendship between a 6-year-old and a dog. With HELEN, starring Ashley Judd, she wrote and directed her first English language production in 2009, followed by MR MORGANʼS LAST LOVE in 2013, starring Michael Caine, Clemence Poesy, Justin Kirk and Gillian Anderson.

As a divorced father of two teenage daughters, with a head-strong ex-wife for a best friend, too many peculiar patients to keep up with and a new dog, psychotherapist Max certainly doesnʼt need another challenge. But when Sophie, a compulsive gambler with a boyfriend problem, regularly shows up late for her appointments, she rocks his world in ways heʼs not ready for. Itʼs not supposed to happen and it happens anyway: a therapist falls in love with a patient. And the more Max attempts to keep it professional, the more their lives get entangled.

So how can he manage to help her without getting involved? How can loving her not lead to losing her altogether? Wrestling with his conscience and his heart, torn between the patient and the woman heʼs in love with, he has no choice but to stick to the old airplane rule: you must help yourself before you can help others.

Populated with a colorful range of characters, WHAT DOESNʼT KILL US is a heart-wrenching yet delightful mosaic of stories just past the midlife crisis, of matters of the heart and identity, of everyday struggles and longtime conflicts. It takes a tender and humorous look at the highs and lows that can either save us or haunt us when we realize that the second half time is already well on its way.

Georg is a gardener in a small Bavarian town, working day-in, day-out in his nursery, which is facing bankruptcy. He doesn‘t like to talk much. He never has. His marriage has long lost all its magic and on top of that, he has trouble to connect with his daughter. Only when he is flying in his own rickety biplane, Georg feels truly free.

When the owner of the local golf course tries to rip him off his pay, because the shade of green of the grass Georg has planted there is not “as green as it gets”, Georg snaps. Just when his airplane is about to be impounded, he grabs the control stick and flies away in an attempt to save his plane and himself.

He embarks on a journey into the unknown, to places he has never seen before, full of odd and special encounters – and with every take-off and every landing, this tough manʼs heart slowly warms up to what you might call an idea of happiness...

ONE CENTURY – ONE FAMILY – THREE GENERATIONS.

A BAVARIAN “WHITE RIBBON” MEETS EDGAR REITZ’ “HOME FROM HOME”.

Bavaria, summer 1984. It is the day of motherʼs funeral. The funeral reception is over, the guests have left. An embittered father and his estranged son are staying behind. The two aren‘t particularly close, actually they never have been. Still the father decides that itʼs time to tell his son the whole story – all of the memories, all of the experiences, his entire life. The son responds with his own version of the events and together they bring their individual and shared moments back to life.

Josef Bierbichlerʼs adaptation of his novel inspired by his own family history portrays around 100 years of cross-generational German history. The representation of the generation of two wars, which had been kept from pursuing their dreams due to external circumstances, forms the central pillar of the film. From the revolution against the king, the rise of the Nazis and the capitalism to the protagonistʼs personal experiences with the Catholic Church, abuse, refugees and economic miracles, TWO MEN IN SUITS tells a very personal story within a universal historical context.

THE DIRECTOR

Josef Bierbichler was born in 1948. He graduated from the Otto Falckenberg Drama School in Munich. When Bierbichler met the director Herbert Achternbusch in the mid-seventies the two formed a creative alliance and worked together on the films THE ATLANTIC SWIMMERS (1975), BEER CHASE (1977) and BYE-BYE BAVARIA (1977). In 1987 he made his script writing and directorial debut with TRIUMPH OF THE JUST, after a story by Oskar Maria Graf. Furthermore he worked with directors such as Werner Herzog, Michael Haneke, Jan Schütte and Tom Tykwer. Bierbichler is successful both in film and on stage. He was awarded Actor of the Year multiple times by the industry magazine “Theater heute” and was awarded, amongst others, the ”Gertrude-Eysoldt-Ring.” For HIERANKL (2003) directed by Hans Steinbichler he was nominated as Best Actor at the German Film Awards and won the Adolf-Grimme-Preis in gold. For his role in WINTERREISE (2006) Bierbichler won the German Film Award for Best Actor in 2007. In 2009 he was nominated as Best Actor at the German Film Awards again for his role in A YEAR AGO IN WINTER by Caroline Link. TWO MEN IN SUITS is his newest directorial work, based on the novel “Mittelreich” also written by Josef Bierbichler.

Suppose your country began to change. Suppose that without your noticing it became dangerous for some people to live in your country. Suppose you found, to your complete surprise, that your own father was one of those people.

That is what happens to Anna in 1933. Anna is not sure who Hitler is. She is nine years old when everything begins, too busy to take much notice of his face on posters all over Berlin. But when her own father goes missing one day, she comes to realize that the man on the posters is about to change the whole of Europe – starting with her own small life.

She is forced to uproot her entire existence. Anna and her family hastily flee Germany, leaving even her favourite stuffed pink rabbit behind. From now on Anna encounters life in exile, not speaking the language, not knowing customs and manners, missing her friends and loved ones. To find a school for Anna is difficult, money is getting very short and they are fearful as they also encounter xenophobia. Yet Anna grows up, finds new friends, and learns to take responsibility. So when her family has to move away yet again, she is certain she can do anything.

BASED ON THE BEST-SELLING NOVEL BY JUDITH KERR. FROM THE DIRECTOROF THE ACADEMY AWARD WINNING “NOWHERE IN AFRICA”.

GERMANY 1933 – A JOURNEY THROUGH EUROPE IN SEARCH OF SAFETY AND A NEW HOME.

As Francis, 30, the only survivor of an illegal crossing from Africa, awakes at a beach in Southern Europe, he swears an oath to God: From now on he wants to be a new, a better, a decent man. Soon after Francis finds himself in Berlin where he realizes how hard it is to be righteous when you are an illegal refugee in Germany – without papers, without nation

and without a work permit. When he receives an enticing offer from the charismatic German Reinhold, 31, to earn easy money, Francis initially resists the temptation, maintains his oath and stays away from Reinhold‘s shady dealings. But eventually he is sucked into Berlinʼs underworld and his life spirals out of control.

After long years of estrangement, brothers Christian (43) and Georg (45) finally cross paths at their fatherʼs funeral. A fist fight at the cemetery and a booze-fuelled wake later, they drunkenly decide to realize their boyhood dream of driving across Germany on their mopeds.

And so begins a journey full of exciting highs and comically-dramatic lows. A journey that allows the two brothers to reconnect and leads them to a turning point in their lives.

A HEART-WARMING COMEDY ABOUT TWO ESTRANGED BROTHERS AND THEIR MOPED JOURNEY ACROSS GERMANY FROM THE BLACK FORREST TO THE BALTIC SEE - NEVER FASTER THAN 25 KM/H,

BUT ALWAYS FULL OF SEX, DRUGS & PING PONG.

Seventeen-year-old Franz journeys to Vienna to apprentice at a tobacco shop. There he meets Sigmund Freud, a regular customer, and over time the two very different men form a singular friendship. When Franz falls desperately in love with the music-hall dancer Anezka, he seeks advice from the renowned psychoanalyst, who admits that the female sex is as

big a mystery to him as it is to Franz. As political and social conditions in Austria dramatically worsen with the Nazisʼ arrival in Vienna, Franz, Freud, and Anezka are swept into the maelstrom of events. Each has a big decision to make: to stay or to flee?

Bernd Trautmann, born in 1923 in Germany, is captured by the British in WWII. During a football match between the prisoners, the goalkeeper is noticed by Jack Friar, manager of an amateur club. Forced upon the team, Trautmann soon surprises on and off the field. Prejudice subsides, friendships start to develop and Trautmann loses his heart not only to football but to his managerʼs beautiful daughter Margaret. However, Trautmann could not have foreseen the wave of outrage resulting from his engagement at Man City FC. Thousands take to the streets against the signing of the “Nazi.” Feeling alienated and alone, Trautmannʼs and Margaretʼs loyalty to each other is being seriously put to the test. But they

receive support from an unexpected direction: Rabbi Alexander Altmann, who fled the Nazis, publishes an open letter against the anti-German slogans. Trautmannʼs path to acceptance begins and peaks at the 1956 FA Cup Final when he secures victory for Man City by playing on despite a broken neck. Yet fate twists the knife and Trautmannʼs son is killed in a car accident. Heartbroken, Trautmann wants to give up. But a whole nation has learned to accept him, and so he starts to prepare for his comeback. For all those who learned to forgive, for those who had lost someone and most of all for his son, who admired him the most, he must step back onto the pitch.
