Huckleberry picking is a competitive sport. Favorite patches are kept secret. It’s a race to see who can collect the

most and a constant test to know when they are just right for picking. In the west, the wild huckleberry is prized among all other berries.

I didn’t even like berries all that much before encountering the huckleberry, but now I have this need to forage around in the forest, staining my fingers and breaking my back. Maybe it’s because they are a bit erratic and are resistant to domestication. It feels like a prize more than anything else and I like knowing that two months from now I’ll still have some in my freezer while the snow has started to cover up all the plants.

People are protective over a patch they’ve claimed, even if it’s a common spot with high traffic. While picking last week a lady yelled at nearly every car that seemed to slow down on Ski Hill Road near Grand Targhee. Surely she didn’t think she was the only one privy to the site. But other people surprise you. This weekend, after hiking around and not finding a sweet spot, a couple biked by and said there were huckleberries everywhere just 700 yards up the trail. The cynical side of me thought he was probably joking and just wanted us out

of his spot we were currently picking. But we ventured up the road and it was the biggest, most consistent swath of berry bushes I’ve come across in the past few summers. We could have had 20 people picking and not even done much damage.

While I’m no pro, I’ve learned a few tricks of the trade along the way.

Two hands are better than one. Now I wear a jug hung around my neck. It’s much faster and more efficient than carrying around a zip lock bag.

Carry bear spray. You’re competing with the animals for a food source and the way this year has gone, the grizzlies seem to be winning.

Know what you’re looking for. Other berries and often-similar looking ones grow close by. Go with someone who knows what they are or do research before hand.

Use the right tools. Sturdy boots and long pants and sleeves are ideal. Bushes seem to grow on steeper slopes and often not near any kind of trail. You’ll get scratched up and encounter lots of moths and spider webs.

Pack a peanut butter sandwich and a cooler. I learned this one just recently, few things taste as good after a long day picking than a peanut butter sandwich with freshly picked huckleberries and a cold beer.

Naturalist leads huckleberry hunt at Grand TargheeKen Levy / TVN Staff

Brigid Sinram, Grand Targhee Resort naturalist, led a group of eager huckleberry hunters Saturday into the beginner ski areas of the mountain to hunt for the tiny berries.

The hunt was part of the resort’s first Huckleberry Festival, which it hopes to expand in ensuing years.

The berries can be found between the Blackfoot and Sacajawea areas, although the fruit is still green and small in the latter area.

E. Beesley, who was a noted fiddler in the valley, and Charles Carr, a local carpenter, built a two story building at the corner of Little and Main for a dance hall at this time. As an inducement for him to build on the town site, the land was donated to him. A dance hall operated in the top story and the bottom level was used for business. This is currently the Key Bank building.

Mill Creek is a terrific “quick fix” ride on its own, or a fun beginning and end to

a day on the Grand Targhee trails. The trail takes you through some beautiful aspen forest intermit-tently giving you glimpses of the Grand Teton and surrounding mountains. The climb is enough to get you your daily workout, and the downhill is so worthy that folks with long-travel downhill steeds routinely shuttle it.

Beginning at the second Teton Canyon parking lot 0.5 miles off Ski Hill Road, head up the signed singletrack that leaves from the northern side of the lot. The first quarter mile of this uphill is the hardest—there are a few challeng-ing rocky sections and it’s a bit of a lungbuster right out of the start-ing gate. Once you’re through this initial section, however, the climb continues at a slightly mellower grade. After two miles of riding and 800 feet of elevation gain, the Cold Springs Trail heads off to your left. This trail takes you out to Ski Hill Road and can be an excel-lent way to add mileage to your ride. If you’re continuing on Mill Creek, go straight for another mile until you reach an old gate. This is a great stopping point for a short (under one hour) up-and-down

ride. If you continue on, you’ll be on a steep and loose two-track gravel road shortly after the gate. It climbs 0.9 miles to the top of Lightning Ridge at Grand Targhee Resort, another good turnaround point. To continue to the ski resort’s base area, go up and over the small knob to your west and continue to the next saddle. From here you’ll pick up a new section of singletrack that continues 2.5 miles to the resort base. From there, go out to Rick’s Basin, ride the lifts, or have a beer at the Trap Bar. Just remember you will need to do some climbing up to go back down! Regardless of where you turn around on this ride, you’ll have a blast on your way down. There are really very few obstacles (maybe a few cows), and the trail gets ridden frequently enough that it is typically quite buff. Watch out for and yield to uphill riders, hikers, and horses, and enjoy yourself!

Access: From the traffic light in Driggs, head seven miles east on Ski Hill Road. Not long after pass-ing through Alta, Wyo., you’ll see a sign marked “Teton Canyon” on your right; take this turn and drive 0.5 miles to the “winter parking lot” which has a kiosk and creek access. Park here.
