ABOUT VENTUREOHIO
Founded in 2013, VentureOhio is the unified voice for the capital sources and other organizations that finance or support high growth companies based in Ohio and that seek to make Ohio a preferred location for high potential entrepreneurial activity. VentureOhio collaborates with state and local officials, major corporations, foundations, universities, and service providers to strengthen Ohio’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
VentureOhio promotes policies and programs to help increase early stage capital availability and the number of high potential companies started in Ohio. VentureOhio also engages in activities intended to educate Ohio’s investors and entrepreneurs, improve institutional technology transfer and commercialization, support productive tax and regulatory changes, and tell Ohio’s entrepreneurial success stories to audiences inside Ohio and across the nation.
VentureOhio membership is open to investors, support organizations, service providers, educational and research institutions, corporations, and individuals. Its Board of Directors is comprised of members of the entrepreneurial ecosystem from across Ohio, and it is led by a full-time executive director.

DAVID MORGENTHALER LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD WINNER
Growing an innovation economy isn’t just about building businesses–it’s about creating a sustainable ecosystem where ideas, cultures, and capital thrive. This is something that James (Jamie) Ireland III instinctively understood, which is why he dedicated his life and career to furthering what he called the “Renaissance of Cleveland.”
After leaving Ohio to pursue his education, Jamie joined Salomon Brothers, Inc. until returning to Cleveland in the early ‘90s. In 1993, he cofounded Capital One Partners, which soon expanded to create Early Stage Partners (ESP), one of the first true Series A funds in Northeast Ohio. Since 2001, ESP has raised two funds with over $100 million of capital under management. As one of the founding investors of Capital One Partners, Jamie was a key founder of JumpStart, Inc. Cleveland’s premier entrepreneurial services provider.
Jamie’s impact on his community transcended the investment world. A lifelong advocate for Cleveland’s cultural rebirth, he served as chairman emeritus of University Circle, Inc., president of the Musical Arts Association (Cleveland Orchestra), and chairman of the Great Lakes Science Center.
We are pleased to honor Jamie not only for the work that he did,
but also for the person that he was. As his colleague Jonathan Murray said, “Jamie led, but always by empowering the talents of
other people. He did this quietly, without taking credit. It was only when I started talking about it that I discovered he had done this with dozens of people, each of whom, like me, thought that they
were the only ones to benefit from this gift.” A leader to friends, family, colleagues, and community alike, he was a true embodiment of what the Morgenthaler Lifetime Achievement
Award represents: an unwavering dedication to the furtherance of
Ohio’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
