VENUS
Goddess of Love, Beauty, Fertility, Prosperity and Victory
Venus is the Roman goddess
of love, beauty, fertility,
prosperity and victory. She
was a lot of women’s patron
goddess. They prayed to her
if they wanted to be more
beautiful, have a healthy
baby, be prosperous, or win
something.
VENUS AND THE ROMAN PEOPLE
The patron deity of Pompeii was a
statue of Venus. She was fully clothed
and was wearing a crown. The frescos
and statues that have been found in
Pompeian gardens have depicted Venus
either scantily clad or in the nude.
Pompeians seem to have referred to
these nude images of Venus as Venus
fiscia; this may be from the Greek word
physike, which meant ‘related to
nature’. Venus had lots of affairs with
Roman mortals, too.
These are some Roman coins depicting Venus.
Of august gold-wreathed and
beautiful Aphrodite I shall
sing to whose domain belong
the battlements of all sea-
loved Cyprus where, blown by
the moist breath of Zephyros,
she was carried over the
waves of the resounding sea
on soft foam. The gold-filleted
Horae happily welcomed her
and clothed her with heavenly
raiment.
THE BIRTH OF VENUS
poem by Greek refugee: Demetrios Chalkokondyles.
The Romans seriously needed to stop copying the Greeks..
VENUS VS. APHRODITE
Venus Aphrodite
Basically, Venus and Aphrodite were the same, the Romans just didn’t want to look like they were copying the Greeks. (But they actually were..)
I think Venus is a very
interesting goddess. I
love learning about
history, and Roman
religion is very cool.
Venus gave the Roman
women a voice, even if it
wasn’t very strong.
MY OPINION ON VENUS
