You don’t have to have a college degree to serve. You don’t have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” -Martin Luther King, Jr. A Look Back Even though the economy last year presented many challenges, Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home & Family Services had many things for which to be thankful in 2011. High on the list were our faithful donors. The funds you provided were a blessing for our youth and our programs. With your help we were able to serve 190 youth on the Monticello Campus. The addition of the new Transitional Living Program will enable Vera Lloyd to serve even more in 2012. As donors, you helped us continue the quality of care that we all expect at Vera Lloyd. We saw the Gray House transformed into a comfortable transitional living home capable of housing four young men. Contributions provided renovations, furnishings and appliances throughout the house. New beds were constructed for the entire campus through volunteer time and donations. Contributions helped remodel our school and improve the learning environment for the youth. Presbyterian churches in both Presbyteries are active participants in the homes, as well as financial supporters of our mission. Church activities last year included in-home visits with the youth; an abundance of gifts at Christmas, musical programs, needlework classes, birthday celebrations, youth visits to sponsoring churches, and campus work projects, just to name a few. Our 10th annual Pink Hat Day honoring Presbyterian Women was a success, with women aending from across Arkansas and northern Louisiana. Laurence E. Schmidt Center, under the direction of Rev. Rebecca Spooner, LPC, continues to experience growth in this ministry with an increase in individual, group, and family therapy. Thank you to all of the churches and individuals for your continued support. 2011 Annual Report Shelby’s Story The following is from a recent visit with one of our youth. Though her name is changed, her story is real. Shelby is a bright, smart, beautiful and thoughtful 16-year-old. She has been on campus in the Shelter for only two months. She was removed from her Chicago home by her father and brought to Arkansas with her other siblings. All of them were physically and mentally abused by their father, while their mother remained in jail. Many times Shelby reached out for help, but no one believed her. They believed her father’s denial of abuse in the home. One day, when her sister went to school with a busted lip, an adult finally became concerned and removed all of the children from the home. Shelby arrived on the campus of Vera Lloyd during the night. Her siblings were placed in different homes. When I asked her what her time at Vera Lloyd meant to her, her reply was simple, “It feels good and I am now safe. I wish my brothers and sisters were here with me, but they are safe too.” She is grateful to be geing back on schedule with her school work since coming to Vera Lloyd. Shelby is working hard on her classes, and after graduation she has dreams of becoming a model. She hopes to return to Chicago to live with her grandmother. Shelby is thankful to be at Vera Lloyd, away from the daily abuse. Your help makes it possible to care for youth like Shelby. Thank you for helping us continue to serve our youth.
