1 VERAK-EMC IMnet 310 ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS CREATE NOISE All electronic circuits create electronic noise, which can be manifest in a number of forms; Mains borne interference (Conducted interference), and Electronic circuits generating radio waves (Radiated interference). Both these sources of interference generated by a system can affect other electronic systems within the area. INTERNATIONAL STANDARDS DICTATE THE LEVELS OF ACCEPTABLE ELECTRONIC NOISE The EU along with nearly all industrial countries have clearly defined legislation which states the ‘Electro-Magnetic Compatibility (EMC) between systems in different working environments. These standards state the limitations of electronic interference emission permissible by a system. They also define the level of general electronic noise for the correct operation of systems. Therefore all electronic systems must be tested for both emission and immunity. The level of permissible emissions and immunity is set for either the industrial environment where higher levels are acceptable or office environments where permissible levels are lower. Producing a system to be used in an industrial environment means it is allowed to emit higher levels of interference. The counter case is that it must be capable of operating in an environment of higher interference. There are a large number of regulatory bodies and directives relating to EMC, the most commonly used in the electronics industry are the following:- CENELEC EN55081/2, AND 55022 CISPR 22 FCC VDE BS Within the EU CE marking is compulsory, therefore all systems must comply with the relevant EN standard. THE ENCLOSURE CAN CONTRIBUTE TO THE SOLUTION Electronic engineers are trying to solve EMC problems at the circuit board level for all electronic systems. This is not always possible or economic. The characteristics of some electronic products are, by their very nature, inherently noisy. It is at this point where the enclosure can contribute to the EMC solution. The enclosure can be used to attenuate the RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) signals generated by the system and general interference in the environment reaching the system. Again some systems are highly susceptible to external interference and an EMC shielded cabinet is often the best solution. APW enclosures are designed to minimise the effect of EMI & RFI. A suitable enclosure can form an integral part of an EMC solution. Only complete systems can carry the CE mark and therefore its vital the correct cabinet is selected. Emissions can be significantly reduced when using VERAK. This will assist integrators to achieve the necessary attenuation levels. A typical enclosure with an attenuation of 60dB at a frequency of say 300MHz in theory can cut the systems emitted signal by 99.9%. Systems often have to be constructed to achieve levels of attenuation. APW’s experience will greatly benefit during any integration process. Cable entry and exit points, seals and filters play an important part in the effectiveness of the overall system. VERAK and its accessories combined with APW’s experience in EMC simplify a complex problem for its customers. ELECTRONIC SYSTEMS CREATE NOISEAll electronic circuits create electronic noise, which can bemanifest in a number of forms; Mains borne interference(Conducted interference), and Electronic circuits generatingradio waves (Radiated interference). Both these sources ofinterference generated by a system can affect other electronicsystems within the area.

VERAK - THE PREFERRED SOLUTION

APW has been supplying shielded cabinets for 20 years and hasbuilt up extensive knowledge in this subject. VERAK is the latestevolution which incorporates the best of the current technicalinnovations. APW has successfully supplied a large number ofsystems to mission critical applications.

APW- EXPERTS IN SHIELDED CABINETS

n High RFI attenuationVERAK has a very high level of attenuation therefore it willnormally solve all commercial EMC problems.

n Simplified cable entryVERAK’s careful management of cables and filters enablesenclosure attenuation to be maintained.

n Thermal managementAll electronic systems generate heat. There is no point in asystem complying with the EMC regulations by putting it into anenclosure if the system fails to function due to over heating. TheVERAK system has a large number of thermal control andmanagement products to ensure an effective solution to theindividual system’s thermal requirements.

n StylingConsiderable attention to detail is given to system design. Oncein an enclosure the visible part of the product is its enclosure.VERAK reflects the time, cost and attention to detail put into thesystem.

n Simple baying. For large systems it can be very cost effective to bay enclosurestogether rather that having separate racks with the cabling andfiltering inter-linking the individual racks. For this reason VERAKhas been made to be quickly and easily bayed together withouteffecting the unit’s attenuation level.

n The VERAK range and accessoriesThe comprehensive range of VERAK sizes plus its very extensiverange of accessories means it can cope with the most unusualsystem requirements using standard ‘off the shelf’ components.

n Heavy duty frame and robust claddingMost electronic systems are built into an EMC enclosure withinthe systems manufacturers factory. These systems can be heavybut more importantly the system needs to be shipped as acompleted solution to the end customer who could be anywherein the world. The Enclosures frame is strong enough to protectthe system and ensure that transporting the units does notdamage the EMC integrity.

GLAZED DOORRFI screened, tinted glass complete with swing handle. Therequired lock or lock blank needs to be ordered separately.

SHORTENED STEEL DOORS AND 10U CABLE ACCESSPANELA shortened steel door needs to be ordered separately from the10U recessed cable access panel. The cable access panel isrecessed by 60mm so cable connectors do not protrude out fromthe foot print The panel can be fitted above or below the doorand is easily removed to facilitate the fitting of cable connectorsetc.

The 1.6mm steel door comes complete with swing handle. Therequired lock or lock blank needs to be ordered separately

TOP/BOTTOM PLATESFor VERAK EMC to work as an EMC enclosure top and bottomplates must be fitted.

PLAINThis plain EMC shielding panel which can be fitted at either thetop or bottom of the rack can also be utilised as a cable entrypanel

VENTEDThe vented EMC shielding panel allows air to flow through therack assuming a ‘vented plate' is fitted at both the top andbottom of the rack and the rack is fitted with a ventilated topcover. A top mounted ‘fan tray' can also be fitted under the topmounted ‘vented plate’ to provide forced air cooling. See page247 for fan tray details.

STEEL DOORS1.6mm steel door complete with swing handle. The required lockor lock blank needs to be ordered separately

SIDE PANELSSide panels are sold in pairs and are 1.6mm steel painted inRAL7035. The side panels are fitted using captive pozi drivescrews which allow the units to easily fitted or removed.

BAYING BRACKET KITThe kit consists of the required length of self-adhesive RFIcontact fingers and IP gasket material plus 6 brackets which lockthe two racks together to form a bayed suite of racks. For example: If three racks are to be bayed together to makeone suite of racks, one pair of ‘side panels’ are required (to beused either end of the suite) and two ‘baying bracket kits’.

PLAIN IP55 TOPIP 55 unvented top cover.

SIDE VENTED TOP COVERThis top allows convected air to flow out through the top. Note, for air to be able to flow through the rack a vented top andbottom plate must be fitted.

FULLY VENTED TOP COVERA fully vented top is recommended when a fan tray is to beused. Note, for air to be able to flow through the rack a ventedtop and bottom plate must be fitted.
