More Verbs…Transitive & Intransitive
What’s the difference?
Transitive Verbs• Expresses action toward a noun.
• The action passes from the doer (subject) to the receiver
• The word that receives the action of a transitive verb is called a direct object.
EXAMPLE: The monkey entertained Zach.
*Think…entertained what/who?...Zach, so Zach is the direct object.
Intransitive Verbs• Tells something about the subject.• There is no one or nothing receiving the
action.
EXAMPLE: Mr. Doodle crowed.*There is nothing receiving the action crowed, so crowed is INTRANSITIVE.
Hint: If the sentence is intransitive, there is no direct object.
Remember This!!• If a sentence is Transitive it has a Direct Object and maybe an Indirect Object.
• If a sentence is Intransitive, it does NOT have a Direct Object.
Trans = DO Intrans = No DO
