MissionWe are a Vintage/Boho magazine that represents the different tastes that Fairfield county, CT has within it’s thick walls. We draw examples from many diffrent magazines like Elle, Vogue, Seventeen, and most of all Boho magazine! We choose to use High School Students because they represent a large part of our popula-tion, and this magazine was made to target young girls from 14 all the way to 22, with all different tastes. Our message and philiosphy for everyone is that hard work, fun, and determination can take them a long way, and even further. Verita is a footprint in our hearts and we only wish that every-one enjoys the magazine as much as we enjoyed making it. Again Thank You to everyone who helped us, and we couldn’t be more Thankful! Sincerely,Nataly Monsalve &Stephanie CasolinoClass of 2011 Project Explorer

Letters from the Editors

Stephanie Casolino: Nataly Monsalve: Honestly I couldn’t have done this without all 24 models, photographers and my co-worker Nataly. There were times when I wanted to give up everything I worked so hard for and quit. I always doubted myself that nothing would turn out right. Sometimes it did and sometimes it didn’t, but what can you do it’s life. Then I would think about the fights and disagreements and in the end it was never awkward with my partner. We have made plenty of mistakes and had our disputes and if anything it made us closer for all we can do is look back and laugh. If anything my partner and I are completely different but when I really sit down and think to myself, we really aren’t. We both work really hard because Verita Magazine has been a dream for the both of us. Nataly and I noticed there are not many magazines for teens. If you think about it, really, in my opinion, there aren’t. The way beauty is perceived today is not what Nataly and I wanted at all! Fashion can still be affordable and look good. During the experience I can say overall that I had a blast! At the end of the day if I was stressed I would always have Nataly my coworker and most important my best friend who guided me through this experience. I can say from September until now I have grown as a person and I thank everyone for helping me through my hectic, but fulfilling journey. Love,

Stephanie (you gotta want it) Casolino

Making a magazine as a senior in high school is no easy task, but if there is one thing I know, is that I couldn’t have done it without the help of my co-partner Stephanie. She was my biggest supporter when, I was ready to throw in the towel. We were like any other co-workers and best friends; we argued, we yelled, we got mad at each other, and most of all ,we were there for each other, the journey was like riding a roller coaster, because it had its up and downs, but the ups made the down look small. There were times when we didn’t agree with each other over decisions, but in the end we would either make a compromise, or agree. Working as a team had its lows and it’s highs, as anything, but the most difficult part for me was remembering that she was my best friend, and I didn’t want to lose her. I remember, the worst time of this experience was when everything was going down hill, and Stephanie stopped talking to me. We didn’t talk for weeks, until she said I’m done, and I will take the F. I had nothing to say to that, so the weeks went on until by accident we both ended up in Dr. radshaws room. From that moment we had to work out our problems and I thank Dr. Radshaw for that because this magazine wouldn’t be here if she didn’t help us work our problems out. I am thankful to Stephanie for putting up with me, because I have grown, but I have also been hard to work with. I also thank all the models, and photographers for everything they have done, even though we have been a pain. Most of all I want to thank Mr. Karl, and Dr. Radshaw for everything they have done for us. You guys helped make this magazine possible. Xoxo, Nataly(Keep your head up) Monsalve

What’s Your body shape?

Circle: Always has extra fat or stomach around their tummy area, they also then want to cover that up. CLOTHIING TIP: If you are a circle, you should wear shirts that will cover the problem area, wear a classy but baggy shirt, and always wear hugging jeans. Also preferably wear straight or bootcut jeans to balance your body out.

Body Types & Clothing advice

Triangle: The Body shape has a small set of shoulders, an a smaller stom-ach area than their hips. CLOTHIING TIP: If you are a Triangle avoid baggy clothes, because it makes you look smaller and uneven. Always try and wear pant legs like flare and a-line skirts that will even you out, and avoid skinnies. Try to also wear tailored blazors and box cut shirts.

Hour Glass: The Hour Glass is made up of a bunch of angles. This body type consist of a large chest area, a curvey stomach area, hips, and a very porpor-tioned body. CLOTHIING TIP: If you are a Hour Glass, do not wear any form fitting clothes like baby doll, tunica, and oversized clothes. Try to wear high waisted pants to bring equality to your waist line, and V-neck t-shirts because it brings out your curves with out show-ing too much. When you think of wearing a dress, go for the wrap dress, because it helps level out your waist.

Rectangle: This body has little to no defination, and can be considered boyish. This body type if not dressed up right can be drowned in clothes and layers. CLOTHIING TIP: If you are a Rectangle tend to go for fitted blazer that carry nip and tucks to de-fine a waist, and wear bootcut jeans to create curves and give the illusion of volume.Always go for shirts that have a design or ruffles at the shoulder or neck area, be-cause it draws attention away from your waist and also wear flared skirts to create an hour glass illusion.

Wha

2. Walking around

showing your bum or bra

is not ok, go home and

cover up!

3. Pants were made to cover up your tushy, so do not let others see your under garmets, it is inap-proaite and ugly.

3. The Sexy turtle neck has come back strong for the fall of 2010-2011, and you might say turtlenecks are ugly, but with some funky acessories, it will create magic.

2.The High collar is brillant for those crazy cold days, and a sylish night out.

1.Patchwork has become the new trend this fall, but can become tacky if adding too many accesories.

The hottest trends for 2010-2011 fall are hitting stores with the return of old trends and rare trends like turtle necks, and patches!

1. Pj’s to school or a

work environment is

horrible, so leave them in

bed at home.

26

Page 27: VERITA

What’s NOT!

5. Run down shoes are not pretty, they make an outfit go from fab to garbage chic.

6. Too much white, is hard to pull off, and risky business. Stay away from all white outfits, unless completely necessary.

6. Wide pants have once again came back. They are elegant, and casual, and comfortable everyday wear.

5. Quilting has become a wonderful techinque to make a coat for those chilly winter days.

4. Fringe has appeared again, but this time more on clothes. It’s fun, fabou-lous, and cute.

4. Wearing short skirts that do not fit properly or show off your garmets, is inapporiate, and one of the biggest faux pas.

Fashion, though fun has a lot of faux pas that are commited on a daily ba-sis. Follow the tips above to a trendier wardrobe. 27

Inspirational Story

Who I am is BEAUTIFUL

ww

w. trashionista.com

Recently I found myself on my bed, screaming and grunting to squeeze into these jeans that well, obviously were two sizes too small for me. I stopped to wonder why was I doing this to myself; was it because of the media and the vogue magazine’s or because I was consumed with stupidity? Why couldn’t I love my size 14 self that was healthy and beautiful? Why did I have to change myself? Ahhhh, that’s why, because of that c o m m e r c i a l that slowly caught my eye, talking about a new Chinese diet and the new Victoria Secret c o m m e r c i a l that followed. I was filled with sorrow, sadness, and well hate for my body. Most of all I felt UGLY It feels like I had thrown everything that I had ever believed in out the window. Who had I become? Had my self-esteem and prettiness been based on some stupid commercial that created an ideal version of beauty? NO! My beauty was much more than

skin deep, it went all the way to my heart. It consisted of no pair of jean, or commercials, but who I really was! I decided, that I had to love myself just the way I was made, and just like Natasha beddingfield said in her song “ Freckles” a sky isn’t a sky without stars. The world wasn’t complete without curves! The world, much as I did,

still has to learn to love their bodies, like Justin Bieber says “ baby, baby, baby” is what we should all say about our bodies. Every Woman should speak great things about their bodies, and scream it. The day that had made me feel so many bad and good emotions in one day was sunny, cold, and beautiful. That day caused me to change

my views, so I chose to write on my jeans “ I am who, I am” and hung them up in my room waited for the paint to dry, and then threw them on the lawn for everyone to see! Everybody should love their bodies. Everyone should throw a fist in the air and scream, “my body is beautiful”, and worship their bodies like a temple.

The store was opened in August 2010, because before she chose to open the store; she worked in the corporate world with consignment stores and designers. Interior design has taken the world by storm, and Mrs. Waicek chose to have her own interior design store because, “ I love being around beautiful things and people coming in and sharing the beautiful things with them.”

The store is arranged in a way, where the environment gives off “ Good Karma”

said Mrs. Wiacek. The upholstery ,workmanship, and fabrics on the furniture gives the store a good look, and radiates beauty. Mrs. Waicek’s favorite furniture style is “ hollywood glam, and the 30’s and 40’s look.” She describes that her favorite piece in the store is “ the

Philip Post : Dertbag “T-shirt Time”

Philip Post is a sixteen year old entrepreneur that handles his Dertbag company very well, and he hopes to expand his company to bigger limits as he grows older. Philip is a welcoming and kind boy who spends his time skateboarding, and making T-shirts, but he also loves to do what all teenagers like to do lay around. He spends the majority of his time at home, since he is home schooled due to Crohns disease. Philip comes from a line of talented and artistic family members seeing as his mom is a writer, his dad is an artist, and one of his sisters is currently going to scad to study fashion. He started his Dertbag clothing line in 2007 ,when he decided he wanted to make clothes that he liked, he drew inspiration for his craft from several other local t-shirt makers. The name of his company Dertbag comes from the reason that most people are dertbags in some way or another. He also uses the quote “ keep it gutta” to explain the lifestyle of a

dertbag. Philip is a talented kid that has thought out many of his steps for the company, but there are other times when he just went with the flow, and that flow took him places. Currently Philip’s shirts are being worn by a celebrity band called “ Odd Future,” he explains that they saw his stuff and liked it, so he sent them a couple shirts to wear. He didn’t intend to get so much attention. Dertbag currently ships to everywhere in the United States, London, Japan, Berlin, Germany, Niece, France, and Melbourne, Australia. In Japan, and London he currently has venders who he sells to called “ Rough trade” and “ Radlounge.” It’s no doudt that Philip Post is a talented kid, who will grow as his company does, he is currently working on launching jeans as a part of his collection and thinks of maybe, possibly creating a girls line. Until then, Norwalk shall see Philip and his company grow sucessfully.

News Story

People obsess over their looks all the time. You have probably caught yourself staring at the mirror, wishing that one birthmark was not in the middle of your face, or that your nose was shaped a different way. These thoughts are normal for everyone, unless you have Body Dysmorphic Disorder, otherwise known as BDD.

BDD is a psychological disorder that causes its victims to constantly obsess over one ‘problem area.’ What makes this behavior different than anyone who worries about their looks is that while most people say they obsess over it, people with BDD truly obsess. The one flaw that they think they have consumes every thought they have. They constantly worry about

their nose, or a large freckle. Sometimes there is no visible mark or freckle, but the person sees it in the mirror. Or their nose is normal sized, but when they look in the mirror they see a nose the size of a tennis ball. This one flaw, real or imaginary, interrupts their social functioning, causing them to be unable to think about any other subject besides their ‘problem area.’ They may try to cover up their flaw with make-up, a hat, or other clothing. Once they start feeling that that is not enough to hide behind, the sufferers will seclude themselves, staying home, and not letting anyone see them for fear they will be rejected or ridiculed about their flaw, which to them has become so monstrous they fear people will fear it.

Page 69: VERITA

We at Verita Magazine were able to get an interview with a woman who suffered from BDD as a teen. Her story starts out when she was only seven years old. A boy in her class noticed a mole on her cheek and made fun of it. She says it was only one or two comments, but it stuck with her. She never truly obsessed over it until she hit the age of fourteen, after having broken up with her first ever boyfriend. She says she went home and looked in the mirror and decided it was because of her mole, and how disgusted he was by it, that they broke up.

Every morning after that, she would put foundation over her mole in an attempt to conceal it. In reality, her mole was very small, so this was easily accomplished. After a while though, she would start to spend extra time in her bathroom, staring at the mole, thinking about how many people would look at it instead of in her eyes. She begged her mom to have it removed, but her mother refused, saying she’d rather spend the money on her when and if she actually needed medical help.

It only got worse from there. She would sit through her classes and instead of paying attention to the lesson, or even to her friends, she’d obsess about her mole, thinking that everyone was looking at it. She started to stay home on the weekends instead of going out with her friends because she felt like if she spent too much time in public, someone would notice her mole.

As her self-seclusion escalated, so did the way she perceived her mole. She would spend more and more time in front of the mirror, just staring at the mole. To her, at this point, she says that her mole looked and felt like the size of a golf ball. She would cry, thinking that she was a monster.

She started skipping school all together; feigning illness, so her mother would

leave her alone, which she says wasn’t hard because her mother wasn’t so perceptive. When summer finally hit three weeks later, it was easier for her to seclude herself. She moved a large hanging mirror into her room when no one was home so she could see her mole. By this point, she wouldn’t leave her room unless no one was home. She felt like a freak, a monster, an abnormality.

What ended up saving her, though, was a call at the end of the summer from the boy that was her boyfriend before. He demanded to know why he hadn’t seen her the whole summer. She tried to play it off, telling him she had been busy, but he knew her too well, and she ended up confessing about her obsession with her mole. No matter how many times he would tell her it was normal sized, she would not believe him. At the end of their third phone conversation, he said that he had had enough, and was coming over her house. She screamed, begged him not to come. So he didn’t. What he did instead was tell his mother. His mother, being an active member in their town, and also a good friend of a psychologist, was the one who got her help. She didn’t want to go into detail about

her early recovery. She said it was too painful. This story does, however, have a happy ending. The girl is now a woman of the age of thirty one. She’d gone to therapy for years, before finally her psychologist took her to get the mole removed completely. The boy who saved her is now her husband, and she hinted at one day possibly having

children. She says therapy helped get her to accept her mole, but what really, finally cured her was getting it removed. She said she wanted to be a motivational speaker for teenage girls, but still hasn’t worked up the courage. Doing this interview, she said, is her first baby step towards that goal.
