We are young. This is our voice. With this theme as a guide, the Dominican Convent iSchool Africa Video Press Team created a video addressing the right to sanitation that is denied to young people in South Africa and around the world. Shortly after entering the video in a contest for iSchool SA, the team was pleased to find out that the video had won first prize. The competition prize included a trip to the City Press offices to see the special Youth Month edition in production. Ten members of the team visited the City Press offices and were invited to sit in on the weekly meeting where the Sunday edition began to take shape. After a ques- tion and answer session with the heads of each department, the team departed to do research for an assignment from the head editor. The Press Team later returned to the City Press offices to discuss article ideas. After a long discussion in the City Press boardroom, the learners presented their ideas to the head news editor, who enthusiastically tasked them with more research to be done. Their new task: to write an article about the problems faced by young people around the world, with a chance to have it published in a Youth Month edition of City Press. “I really enjoyed being a part of the edito- rial meeting and watching how interest- ing ideas were shared.” IMANI NYEZI, 9R “My interaction with the journalists gave me a better sense of their approach to telling worthwhile stories.” NOMSA ZIKALALA, 10S We are young. p RAISING VOICES Members of the iSchool Africa Video Press team pose at the City Press offices where they worked on a special Youth Month edition.

I was very excited to hear that our School Press Team received first prize for a video they submitted for the annual iSchool SA Competition.

My excitement was not only due to the fact that they won first prize but rather because we have young people at DCS who genuinely care about the plight of their fellow South Africans. By producing this video on the lack of sanitation in South Africa for many of

our marginalised population, the Press Team has shown that one voice can be heard and can make a difference.

It was Aristotle who said that “Education of the mind without education of the heart is no education at all”.

Thank you Press Team for your voice and your heart.

MS AMANDA BEUKES | HOD, FOUNDATION PHASE The Foundation Phase learners were entertained by representatives from Dettol on Wednesday 18 June. The learn-ers learned the six steps of washing your hands correctly. They met Detto who danced and sang with them. The learners are also taking part in a competition to collect as many Dettol soap wrappers as possible. For every ten wrappers collected the school will get a bar of Dettol soap for free. The school that collects the most wrappers could stand a chance to win R50 000. We are going to try and collect as many as we can. Please send us your Dettol soap wrappers.
