Changes introduced in SF Oracle RAC 6.0.1This section lists the changes in SF Oracle RAC 6.0.1.

New versioning process for SFHA Solutions productsSymantec made some changes to simplify the versioning process to ensure thatcustomers have a unified experience when it comes to deploying our differentproducts across Storage, Availability, Backup, Archiving and Enterprise Securityproducts. With this change, all the products will have a 3 digit version, X.Y.Z. Incomplying with this approach the current SFHA Solutions release is available asversion 6.0.1.

New directory location for the documentation on the software mediaThePDF files of the product documentation are now located in the /docsdirectoryon the software media. Within the /docs directory are subdirectories for each ofthe bundled products, which contain the documentation specific to that product.Thesfha_solutionsdirectory containsdocumentation that applies to all products.

Changes related to installation and upgradesThe product installer includes the following changes in SF Oracle RAC 6.0.1.

Locally-installed installation and uninstallation scripts nowinclude the release versionWhen you run local scripts (/opt/VRTS/install) to configure Veritas products, thenames of the installed scripts now include the release version.

  • Note: If you install your Veritas product from the install media, continue to runthe installsfrac command without including the release version.

To run the script from the installed binaries, run the installsfraccommand.

Where is the current release version with no periods or spaces.

For example, to configure the 6.0.1 version of your product, run this command:

    # /opt/VRTS/install/installsfrac601 -configure

VxVM private region backup pre-checks for disk groups priorto upgradeThe installer verifies that recent backups of configuration files of all the diskgroups inVxVMprivate regionhave been saved in the /etc/vx/cbr/bkdirectoryprior to doing an upgrade. If not, a warning message is displayed.

    Warning: Backup /etc/vx/cbr/bk directory.

Support for Solaris 11 Automated InstallerYou can use the Oracle Solaris Automated Installer (AI) to install the Solaris 11operating systemonmultiple client systems in anetwork.AI performsahands-freeinstallation (automated installationwithoutmanual interactions) of both x86 andSPARC systems. You can also useAImedia (AI bootable image, provided byOracle, which can be downloaded from the Oracle Web site) to install the Oracle SolarisOS on a single SPARC or x86 platform. All cases require access to a packagerepository on the network to complete the installation.

Additional installation postcheck optionsThe postcheck option has been enhanced to include additional checks.

You can use the installer’s post-check option to perform the following checks:

    ■ General checks for all products.

    ■ Checks for Volume Manager (VM).

    ■ Checks for File System (FS).

    ■ Checks for Cluster File System (CFS).

13Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC Release NotesChanges introduced in SF Oracle RAC 6.0.1

  • Support for tunables file templatesYou canuse the installer to create a tunables file template. If you start the installerwith the -tunables option, you see a list of all supported tunables, and the locationof the tunables file template.

Installer support to configure Coordination Point serversYou can now use the -configcps option in the installer to configure CP servers. This functionality to configure CP servers is now integrated with the installer. The configure_cps.pl script used earlier to configure CP servers is nowdeprecated.

You can also configure CP servers by generating response files. You can use the-responsefile '/tmp/sample1.res' option in the installer to configure CPservers.

See the Veritas Cluster Server Installation Guide for more details.

Fast failover of failed links by PrivNIC and MultiPrivNIC agentsThe PrivNIC and MultiPrivNIC agents can now fail over the IP address of a failedlink to an available link when the link status is detected as trouble. If LLT isunable to reach the peer node in two seconds, the link status is marked troubleand the agents fail over the IP address to an available link if the value of the agentattribute EnableUseTroubleState is set to 1 in the type definition of the PrivNICand MultiPrivNIC resource configuration files.

An additional enhancement includes reducing the value of the MonitorIntervalattribute of the agents to the default value of 10 seconds.

Support for Oracle RAC in a zone environmentThis release supports the installation and configuration of multiple non-globalzones in a global zone.

SF Oracle RAC and the necessary agents run in the global zone. Oracle RAC runsin the non-global zone. Youmust configure non-global zoneswith an exclusive-IPzone. The exclusive-IP zonedoesnot share thenetwork interfacewith global-zone.

Using SF Oracle RAC, you can start, stop, and monitor a non-global zone andprovide high availability to Oracle RAC instances inside the non-global zone.

  • SF Oracle RAC installation and configuration checks removed frominstaller

The option SF Oracle RAC installation and configuration checks is nolonger available in the installer.

Changes related to SFDB toolsThe following sections describe the changes related to Storage Foundation forDatabases (SFDB) tools in SF Oracle RAC 6.0.1.

See “Support for creation ofGolden Image snapshots using FlashSnap forOracle”on page 15.

See “Support for Flashsnap at the VVR Secondary site for Oracle” on page 15.

See “Introduction of the Compression Advisor tool for Oracle” on page 15.

Support for creation of Golden Image snapshots usingFlashSnap for OracleIn this release, the SFDB tools support the creation of Golden Image snapshotsusing FlashSnap for Oracle databases.

Onlinemode, third-mirror-break-off type snapshot i.e. online FlashSnap snapshotof a database instance contains all the information needed to create a clone of thedatabase instance. It can act as a template for creating clone database instances. You can thus allocate a FlashSnap snapshot that can be used as a master copy forcreatingoneormore clone instances. The clone instances created fromaFlashSnapimage, termed as the 'golden image', are incremental copies of the master or thegolden image. These depend on the FlashSnap image for their operations.

Support for Flashsnap at the VVR Secondary site for OracleIn this release, the SFDB tools support Flashsnap operation at theVVRSecondarysite for Oracle databases.

Online mode snapshots (i.e. traditional, third-mirror-break-off snapshots) aresupported in VVR replication environment. Also, support for more than onesecondary site is added. For online mode snapshots in VVR environment, IBC(In-Band Control)messages are used to synchronize activities on the Primary andSecondary sites. Snapshot is initiated from VVR Secondary site.

Introduction of the Compression Advisor tool for OracleIn this release, the SFDB tools provide the Compression Advisor tool for Oracledatabases.

15Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC Release NotesChanges introduced in SF Oracle RAC 6.0.1

  • Veritas File System (VxFS) provides the vxcompress utility that can be used tocompress individual files transparent to the underlying applications. Anapplication reading a compressed file automatically receives the uncompresseddata that is uncompressed in memory only; the on-disk part of the data remainscompressed. If an application writes to a compressed file, parts of the file areuncompressed on disk.

Compression Advisor provides extended compression functionality for Oracledatabase files in Oracle single instance and Oracle RAC environments. TheCompression Advisor command sfae_comp_adm resides in the /opt/VRTS/bindirectory, and it must be run by the DBA user.

Changes to LLTThis release includes the following change to LLT:

Setting the value of peerinact in the /etc/llttab file

Symantec recommendsnot to set the value of peerinact to 0. To achieve the infinitetimeout functionality for peerinact, you must set peerinact to a large value. Thesupported range of value is between 1 through 2147483647.

Changes to I/O fencingThis section covers the new features and changes related to I/O fencing in thisrelease.

Enhancement to the CoordPoint agentThe CoordPoint agent monitors changes to the Coordinator Disk Groupconstitution, such as when a disk is deleted from the Coordinator Disk Group dueto accidental execution of aVxVMadministrative commandor if theVxVMprivateregion of a disk is corrupted.

The agent performs detailed monitoring on the CoordPoint resource and reportsfaults. You can tune the frequency of the detailed monitoring by setting theLevelTwoMonitorFreq attribute introduced in this release. For example, if youset this attribute to 5, the agentmonitors the CoordinatorDiskGroup constitutionin every fifth monitor cycle.

For more information on the CoordPoint agent, see the Veritas Cluster ServerBundled Agents Reference Guide.

For information on configuring the CoordPoint agent using script-based installerandmanually configuring the CoordPoint agent tomonitor coordinator disks, seethe Veritas Cluster Server Installation Guide.

No longer supportedThis section lists software versions and features that are no longer supported.Symantec advises customers to minimize the use of these features.

SF Oracle RAC does not support the following:

    ■ Oracle RAC 11g Release 1 Clusterware

    ■ Dissimilar version upgrades of SF Oracle RAC componentsFor example, if youhave SFOracle RAC6.0 installed, you cannot upgrade onlyVCS to version 6.0.1.

    ■ Use of crossover cablesOracle does not support the use of crossover cables for cluster interconnectsdue to the possibility of data corruption and other software limitations.

Note: Crossover cables are however known to function without any issues inSFOracle RAC.While the SFOracle RACTechnical support teammay continueto provide support on related issues for existing deployments, this supportmaybe constrained in some respects as it is no longer a supported configurationby Oracle.

The use of crossover cables is discouraged for new deployments.

    ■ Bunker replication is not supported in a Cluster Volume Manager (CVM)environment.

Veritas Storage Foundation for Databases (SFDB) tools features whichare no longer supported

The following Storage Foundation for Databases (SFDB) tools features are notsupported in this release:

    ■ The storage switch (to which each host on a site connects) must haveaccess to storage arrays at all the sites.

    ■ Volumesmust bemirroredwith storage allocated fromat least two sites.

    ■ DWDM links are recommended between sites for storage links.

DWDM works at the physical layer and requires multiplexer andde-multiplexer devices.

    ■ The storage and networks must have redundant-loop access betweeneach node and each storage array to prevent the links from becoming asingle point of failure.

    Storage

    ■ Oracle requires that all nodes use the IP addresses from the same subnet.

    ■ Symantec recommends a common cross-site physical infrastructure forstorage and LLT private networks.

    Network

I/O fencing requires placement of a third coordinator point at a third site. The DWDM can be extended to the third site or the iSCSI LUN at the thirdsite can be used as the third coordination point. Alternatively CoordinationPoint Server can be deployed at the third remote site as an arbitration point.

Veritas File System requirementsVeritas File System requires that the values of the Solaris variableslwp_default_stksize and svc_default_stksize are at least 0x6000 (for Solaris10) and 0x8000 (for Solaris 11).When you install theVeritas File Systempackage,VRTSvxfs, the VRTSvxfs packaging scripts check the values of these variables inthe kernel. If the values are less than the required values, VRTSvxfs increases thevalues andmodifies the /etc/system filewith the required values. If theVRTSvxfsscripts increase the values, the installation proceeds as usual except that youmust reboot and restart the installation program. A message displays if a rebootis required.

    http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5081https://support.oracle.com

  • To avoid an unexpected need for a reboot, verify the values of the variables beforeinstalling Veritas File System. Use the following commands to check the valuesof the variables:

    # echo "lwp_default_stksize/X" | mdb -klwp_default_stksize:lwp_default_stksize: 6000

    # echo "svc_default_stksize/X" | mdb -ksvc_default_stksize:svc_default_stksize: 6000

    For Solaris 10:

    # echo "lwp_default_stksize/X" | mdb -klwp_default_stksize:lwp_default_stksize: 8000

    # echo "svc_default_stksize/X" | mdb -ksvc_default_stksize:svc_default_stksize: 8000

    For Solaris 11:

If the values shown are less than 6000 (for Solaris 10) and less than 8000 (forSolaris 11), you can expect a reboot after installation.

Note: The default value of the svc_default_stksize variable is 0 (zero), whichindicates that the value is set to the value of the lwp_default_stksize variable. In this case, no reboot is required, unless the value of the lwp_default_stksizevariable is too small.

To avoid a reboot after installation, you canmodify the /etc/system file with theappropriate values. Reboot the system prior to installing the packages. Add thefollowing lines to the /etc/system file:

    set lwp_default_stksize=0x6000set rpcmod:svc_default_stksize=0x6000

    For Solaris 10:

    set lwp_default_stksize=0x8000set rpcmod:svc_default_stksize=0x8000

If a Flash archive is created on a golden host with encapsulated root disks, whenthis Flash archive is installed onto another host through JumpStart, the newsystem may go to maintenance mode when you initially reboot it.

This problem is caused by the predefined root disk mirror in the Flash archive. When the archive is applied to a clone system, which may have different harddrives, thenewly cloned systemmayget stuck at root diskmirroringduring reboot.

Workaround: Create the Flash archive on a golden host with no encapsulatedroot disks. Run vxunroot to clean up the mirrored root disks before you createthe Flash archive.

    Cluster panics during reconfiguration (2590413)

Workaround: There is no workaround for this issue.

GAB may fail to stop during a phased upgrade on Oracle Solaris 11(2858157)

While performing a phased upgrade on Oracle Solaris 11 systems, GAB may failto stop. However, CPI gives a warning and continues with stopping the stack.

Cannot run pfiles or truss files on gablogd (2292294)

When pfiles or truss is run on gablogd, a signal is issued to gablogd. gablogd isblocked since it has called an gab ioctl and is waiting for events. As a result, thepfiles command hangs.

(Oracle Solaris 11) On virtual machines, sometimes the common productinstaller (CPI) may report that GAB failed to start and may exit (2879262)

GAB startup script may take longer than expected to start up. The delay in startup can cause the CPI to report that GAB failed and exits.

I/O fencing known issuesThis section covers the known issues related to I/O fencing in this release.

Installer is unable to split a cluster that is registered with one or more CPservers (2110148)

Splitting a cluster that uses server-based fencing is currently not supported.

You can split a cluster into two and reconfigure SFOracle RAC on the two clustersusing the installer. For example, you can split a cluster clus1 into clus1A andclus1B.

Storage Foundation for Oracle RAC Release NotesKnown issues

    34

  • However, if you use the installer to reconfigure the SF Oracle RAC, the installerretains the same cluster UUID of clus1 in both clus1A and clus1B. If both clus1Aand clus1B use the same CP servers for I/O fencing, then the CP server allowsregistration only from the cluster that attempts to register first. It rejects theregistration from the cluster that attempts next. Thus, the installer reports failureduring the reconfiguration of the cluster that uses server-based fencing.

Workaround: There is no workaround for this issue.

Fencing does not come up on one of the nodes after a reboot (2573599)

If VxFEN unconfiguration has not finished its processing in the kernel and in themeantime if you attempt to start VxFEN, you may see the following error in the/var/VRTSvcs/log/vxfen/vxfen.log file:

However, the output of the gabconfig -a command does not list port b. Thevxfenadm -d command displays the following error:

VXFEN vxfenadm ERROR V-11-2-1115 Local node is not a member of cluster!

Workaround: Start VxFEN again after some time.

The vxfenswap utility does not detect failure of coordination pointsvalidation due to an RSH limitation (2531561)

The vxfenswap utility runs the vxfenconfig -o modify command over RSH orSSH on each cluster node for validation of coordination points. If you run thevxfenswap command using RSH (with the -n option), then RSH does not detectthe failure of validation of coordination points on a node. From this point, vxfenswap proceeds as if the validation was successful on all the nodes. But, itfails at a later stage when it tries to commit the new coordination points to theVxFENdriver. After the failure, it rolls back the entire operation, and exits cleanlywith anon-zero error code. If you runvxfenswapusingSSH (without the-noption),then SSH detects the failure of validation of coordination of points correctly androlls back the entire operation immediately.

Workaround: Use the vxfenswap utility with SSH (without the -n option).

Solaris 10 SMFmarks the service status based on the exit code of the startmethodfor that service. The VxFEN startmethod executes the vxfen-startup script in thebackground and exitswith code 0.Hence, if the vxfen-startup script subsequentlyexitswith failure then this change is not propagated to SMF. This behavior causesthe svcs command to show incorrect status for VxFEN.

Workaround: Use the vxfenadm command to verify that I/O fencing is running.

Fencing port b is visible for few seconds even if cluster nodes have notregistered with CP server (2415619)

Even if the cluster nodes have no registration on the CP server and if you providecoordination point server (CP server) information in the vxfenmode file of thecluster nodes, and then start fencing, the fencing port b is visible for a few secondsand then disappears.

Workaround: Manually add the cluster information to the CP server to resolvethis issue. Alternatively, you can use installer as the installer adds clusterinformation to the CP server during configuration.

CP server repetitively logs unavailable IP addresses (2530864)

If coordination point server (CP server) fails to listen on any of the IP addressesthat are mentioned in the vxcps.conf file or that are dynamically added usingthe command line, then CP server logs an error at regular intervals to indicatethe failure. The logging continues until the IP address is bound to successfully.
