On behalf of the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, I would like to invite you to come and experience our wonderful community!
We are excited to show you all Vermilion Parish has to offer. While the parish has a population of nearly 60,000, the benefits of
small-town living are experienced daily. The pace of life is a little slower in Vermilion Parish; people know their neighbors and take a true interest in their well-being. What people find when they make Vermilion Parish home is a genuinely great place to live, work, play and raise a family.
The Vermilion Chamber of Commerce has been a vital part of this community since 1920 and continues to provide for its members and the community, actively welcoming all new businesses to the parish. The organization offers its member businesses many benefits, opportunities and services to aid in increasing business contacts. Through the Chamber’s numerous events we continue to promote our mission of “creating a positive business and community environment.” On behalf of the Chamber’s Board of Directors and the staff at the Chamber, we invite you to come grow with us.
We are proud to share our community with you and invite you to explore all Vermilion Parish has to offer. Whether you are single, raising a family or in your retirement years, Vermilion Parish is the place for you!
If you are visiting, passing through or relocating, we know you will enjoy your stay!

On behalf of the Mayors of Vermilion Parish, Welcome to “The Most Cajun Place on Earth!”
You have made a wonderful choice in asking for information about Vermilion Parish. We have to warn you, people move here and find over time that they can’t bring themselves to leave. We have a special kind of people here in Vermilion Parish, neighbors that help neighbors just as if they were family.
If you are looking for “toe tappin’” Cajun music, the best seafood – from salty oysters on the half shell to boiled crawfish and everything in between – hunting, fishing and a warm, friendly Cajun welcome, you need look no further than Vermilion Parish.
Nestled along the shores of Vermilion Bay, the parish lies in an
area where agriculture and aquaculture abound. Farmers produce rice, sugarcane, cattle, crawfish and alligators; a large quantity of which ultimately finds its way into the cooking pots of many a local chef or home cook.
The landscape here in south central Louisiana is made up of prairies and wetlands that support cities and communities sprinkled like so many jewels along the Cajun Corridor. Travel the route and you will visit communities whose histories and cultures date back to the 1800s and beyond.
We welcome you to Vermilion Parish where the music is lively, the food is spicy and the people are some of the nicest you will ever meet.
Welcome to “The Most Cajun Place on Earth!”
Why does Louisiana have parishes and not counties? Louisiana was officially Roman Catholic under both France and Spain’s rule. The boundaries dividing the territories generally coincided with church parishes. In 1807, the territorial legislature officially adopted the ecclesiastical term. Through each change in her history, Louisiana never deviated and the primary civil divisions have been officially known as parishes ever since.
Located along the Gulf Coast in south central Louisiana, Vermilion Parish is truly considered a “sportsman’s paradise.” Rich in natural beauty and resources, the land is a blend of prairie lands and winding bayous,
coastal marshes, agricultural landscapes and unique, cultural communities.
Vermilion Parish is a multicultural blend steeped in history with a dash of “joie de vivre” finishing the mix. This bilingual coastal parish is very large and diverse with wandering bayous and farmlands authentic local cuisine and Cajun towns connecting it all. Vermilion Parish has some of the state’s most popular festivals. Learn about our French heritage and deep-rooted culture by visiting one of our many museums, Courthouse or tour a
100-year-old church. The Vermilion Parish Police Jury knows that we are truly blessed to
live in a great place with tremendous people.

Long before Vermilion Parish was established, several Native American tribes inhabited the area. e land remained virtually unsettled through the French colonial period in the state’s history, but began growing by the time the Spanish colonial period rolled around in the early 1760s. French Acadians, or Cajuns, arrived in the southern region of Louisiana following the Great Expulsion of 1760 – an event that led to the deportation of thousands of Acadians from their home in Nova Scotia. e Cajuns were drawn to this coastal area’s rich and fertile land, bountiful wildlife and open prairie that proved ideal for cattle grazing.
e Spanish government awarded land grants to those willing to provide labor in the clearing of land, the building of bridges and levees and the maintenance of roadways. Towns quickly began springing up, and in 1803, the U.S. acquired the territory of Louisiana with the Louisiana Purchase. By March 25, 1844, Vermilion Parish was created by the state legislature from the southern portion of Lafayette Parish. Abbeville, founded in 1843, was incorporated in March 1850 and earned
designation as the seat of Justice for Vermilion Parish in March 1854. Today, nearly 50 percent of the 56,000-plus parish residents boast of Cajun ancestry, with its vibrant culture, internationally recognized cuisine and true Southern hospitality making this “ e Most Cajun Place on Earth.”
Vermilion Parish’s deep history can still be felt in the historic architecture of Downtown Abbeville and in the various museums located throughout the communities. e Vermilion Historical Society was established in 1975 with a mission to collect, preserve and communicate the history of Vermilion Parish. e organization has published two editions of the “History of Vermilion Parish, LA” and “Journeys Into the Past – Abbeville, LA: e Early Years,” by Kenneth A. Dupuy. e Historical Society is also part of the Abbeville Cultural and Historical Alliance, which operates a museum at the Alliance Center featuring a collection of historic artifacts, documents and photographs pertaining to the parish.

Vermilion Parish is part of the six-parish Acadiana region of Louisiana, located in the south-central portion of the state. A mere 20 miles from Lafayette and 150 miles from New Orleans, the parish is easily accessible from Interstate 10 via LA Highways 26 and 13, U.S. Highway 90 and Interstate 49. For those traveling from Texas, the parish is accessible from LA Highway 82. Additionally, LA Highway 14 runs through the parish, o ering a local route, as well as a direct link to U.S. 90, LA 26 and LA 13.
Abbeville Chris Crusta Memorial Airport is readily available in the parish, while Acadiana Regional Airport, a leading general aviation facility, is located within minutes in New Iberia. Corporate aviation, air cargo operations and commercial services are available at the Lafayette
Regional Airport, which o ers daily non-stop ights to destinations in Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Denver and Memphis. Travelers can also take advantage of Amtrak commuter rail service in nearby Lafayette. e station, located at 100 Lee Ave., is served by the Sunset Limited route, which runs between New Orleans and Los Angeles, California, and makes more than 20 stops in between.
Businesses utilize several rail lines that traverse the landscape of the parish, including the Acadiana Railway Company, Burlington Northern Sante Fe Railway, LA & Delta Railroad and Union Paci c Railroad. Plus, its location on the Gulf of Mexico provides convenient options for water travel through the Port of Vermilion in Abbeville, the Twin Parish Port in Delcambre and the nearby Port of Iberia in New Iberia.

Louisiana is truly an oasis for nature enthusiasts, with its varying landscapes of coastal wetlands and prairies and abundance of native wildlife waiting to be discovered. e state is replete with state parks, national wildlife refuges and management areas, city and state preservation sites and a range of further well-maintained outdoor destinations.
ere is no better way to take in the Louisiana landscape than along America’s WETLAND Birding Trail, a path that travels along the entirety of Louisiana’s Gulf Coast – from the Texas border to the Mississippi border. Visitors to the trail can catch a glimpse of the state’s coastal environments and assortment of birds and ora and fauna. e trail is divided into 12 distinct loops, with the Vermilion Loop running along the shores of Bayou Vermilion and into the heart of “Cajun Country.” Several sites spot the Vermilion Loop, including the Bancker Grotto, Palmetto Island State Park, the Mouton Cove Area and the Abbeville RV Park.
Bird watching enthusiasts are also drawn to the Town of Gueydan. With a location on the Mississippi yway, the community is a haven for a number of bird species. e addition of the White Lake Birding and Nature Trail, located at the end of Hwy. 91 south, allows tourists to view native and migratory birds in their habitat. Be on the lookout for Vermilion Parish’s newest residents, Whooping Cranes. Once a nesting area for the almost extinct cranes, e White Lake Conservation Area is now home to over 13 non-migratory whooping cranes. Gueydan has become such a popular destination for birders and duck and goose hunters that the Secretary of State in Baton Rouge has dubbed it the
“Duck Capital of America.”Just outside of Downtown Abbeville, the Abbeville RV Park is a retreat for campers and outdoor
enthusiasts, with an array of natural elements and birds calling this area home. e park features 55 shaded sites complete with water and electric hookups, 50 campsites, a one-mile nature trail and a clubhouse. Located south of Abbeville and on the Vermilion River, Palmetto Island State Park
o ers a real south Louisiana outdoors experience. Overnight guests can stay in one of six vacation
cabins that are nestled among the trees and foliage. For the RV campers, there are 96 campsites to choose from;
20 sites include an extra tent camping pad. e Visitor Center complex features a nature station, a water playground and bathhouse for overnight and day visitors. Several trails, located throughout the park, allow visitors to learn about the area’s native ora and fauna. A boat launch provides access to the river for shing and boating, while canoers and kayakers can explore the interior lagoons for an up-close look at the native plant and animal life.
Another way to enjoy the outdoors is by spending a day on the links. Just outside of Abbeville is Vermilion Oaks, a well-maintained golf course and driving range. Designed by Frank A. Godchaux and opened in 1927, Vermilion Oaks is an 18-hole course o ering nearly 6,150 yards of play from the longest tees. e course features Bermuda grass greens and fairways, and o ers a challenge to any player, from the novice to the experienced. Vermilion Oaks also has a large swimming pool, restaurant and bar area.

Vermilion Parish is blessed with a wonderful climate, good people, good food, plentiful recreational amenities and wonderful opportunities for employment, so its housing market never slowed dramatically, even at the height of the recession, according to local Realtors.
Recent layo s in the oil and gas industry have caused nervousness, however, and resulted in about a 10 percent dip in home prices, according to Kathy Dyson, owner/broker of Kathy Dyson Realty in Abbeville.
“But I expect that to pass. Our market is pretty diverse and very stable. Nothing ever seems to hurt us that bad,” she explained.
James Noel, owner/broker of Sunrise Realty in Abbeville, agreed, pointing to new residential developments under construction in the northern part of the Parish, including a 75-unit apartment complex that is restricted to older adults.
“Vermilion Parish is never hurt as badly by oil and gas layo s as Lafayette, for instance, because the Parish has not been over-built,” Noel said.
“Townhouses are very popular right now and there are some 1,300-square-foot patio homes being built which are selling out as fast as they can build them. We also had a 250-unit apartment complex built that now has a waiting list,” he said.
e most popular type of homes, both new and resale, are traditional-style, raised Acadian homes with broad porches, gable roofs, over-hanging eaves and outside staircases, Dyson stated. e second most popular style today, she said, is French Provincial. Both Acadian and French Provincial homes are available in both new and older neighborhoods, as well as in rural areas throughout Vermilion Parish.
Abbeville, in particular, is very popular with students and faculty at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette because it is only a 15-minute drive from campus. Noel has also noticed numerous overseas tourists from France, Belgium and Canada who have enjoyed their stay in the Parish and chosen to buy a home for retirement or vacations.
“Our French heritage in this area appeals to them,” Noel explained.“Over 50 percent of our local residents were born and raised in
Vermilion Parish and can trace their families back for generations in the area,” Dyson said. “But the rest are transplants who have moved here for employment or retirement, attracted by our good food, great weather, beautiful scenery and many recreational and social opportunities like our festivals, concerts in the park and farmers markets.”
“ e majority who move here for jobs come from the oil elds in Texas. Others come here from all over. We even have snowbirds from the north who come here in the winter and live in our area RV parks to escape the winters up north,” she explained.
“Potential home buyers who are older and have no school age children are attracted to the towns within Vermilion Parish. ose who have children gravitate toward the best school districts, which are often in the rural areas. Many of them also like the fact that they can get larger acreage without restrictions in the rural areas. About 10 percent want to have at least one horse. Many others want to raise chickens for the eggs,” Dyson said.
Noel agreed. “In the rural areas people can have animals, sheds, mobile homes, whatever they want and many like that. Many also like the 10-acre mini-ranches. Waterfront property, of course, is in high demand but U

very scarce, Noel said. Most of it is owned by the old families and few are selling. But the vast land tracts those families once owned are slowly disappearing nevertheless.
“As the older family members pass on, the land is being divided by their wills so that their children all get a portion. Over time, the parcels gets smaller and smaller and that is exactly what has happened in Vermilion Parish,” Noel explained.
Homes currently on the market in the Parish range in size from 1,000 to 4,000 square feet. But the average home falls in the 2,000- to 2,500-square-foot range and sells for between $150,000 and $200,000, he said. e average half- to one-acre lot in Vermilion Parish sells for $25,000, unless it is on the river. A river lot of that size sells for approximately $75,000, according to Noel.

SLCCStudents don’t have to leave home to attain a high-quality college
degree. Abbeville hosts South Louisiana Community College, an institution with a mission to provide current and relevant job training to Vermilion Parish Citizens. SLCC has a presence in eight parishes in Acadiana, including Vermilion parish. Training can be of a short or long duration and result in a certificate, technical diploma, associate degree or industry-based certification.
At SLCC’s Gulf Area campus, students can choose from a number of majors including Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, Cosmetology, Industrial/Agricultural Mechanics Technology, Medical Assistant, Practical Nursing, and Welding. Students can also work toward an associate’s degree in Accounting, Business and Business Administration.
Additionally, the campus can accommodate requests from business and industry to provide customized training and offers high school students the opportunity to take dual enrollment courses, allowing students to earn college credit while in high school.
The Gulf Area campus boasts a healthy placement rate and works with employers to ensure that students have the skills needed by industry and that students exit the training ready for immediate employment.
Gulf Area campus instructors possess industry based certifications and provide instruction in a manner that fosters the acquisition of similar certifications by students. WorkKeys testing is available and can be utilized by employers to assess workplace literacy skills of potential employees. Gulf Area campus also houses the Vermilion parish office of Acadiana Works. This state agency provides job placement assistance and referrals. The campus serves as a one-stop shop for all training and employment needs.
South Louisiana Community College is a comprehensive community college that serves more than 10,000 students annually and operates campuses in Abbeville, Crowley, Franklin, Lafayette, New Iberia, Opelousas, St. Martinville and Ville Platte.
ULLVermilion Parish’s location also places it within close proximity to the
renowned University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the largest member of the university system with almost 19,000 students enrolled each year. Within 30 minutes, students can take advantage of nearly 80 undergraduate degree programs, 24 master’s degree programs, a post-master’s certificate program and doctoral degrees.
Today, Dr. Joseph Savoie, the University’s sixth president, oversees the state’s second-largest public institution. The University is an international leader in computer science, engineering and nursing. But that only counts a few of the more than 120 stellar undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. Or, to put the last century or so in perspective, enough degree options to outnumber the entire original student body.
By any measure, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette is thriving. Freshmen are more prepared for college-level work than ever before. More exceptional students are making UL Lafayette their first university of choice. And the university has devoted unprecedented energy and resources to student success.
THE PAYOFF SO FAR:• UL Lafayette has one of the highest graduation rates in Louisiana.• Faculty members are earning national and international recognition.
And, they are drawing record amounts of external research monies. In 2012, total research and development expenditures at the University totaled $74.68 million; only one other public university in Louisiana spent more on R&D.
• Four student residence halls have been built in the past three years and the expansion and renovation of the Student Union is under way.
• The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns® are poised to lead the Sun Belt Conference in every major sport. And, the alumni can be proud of the fact that their degrees have more value and respect than ever before.
Lifted by the accomplishments of its students, faculty and alumni, the University has pledged to take advantage of every opportunity to achieve greater prominence among public institutions of higher learning.

Touted as “ e Most Cajun Place on Earth,” Vermilion Parish is a large and diverse coastal parish that boasts both farmland and wandering bayous, as well as the deep and navigable Vermilion River which leads to the Gulf of Mexico. Most of its 60,000 people are bilingual, speaking both Cajun French and English.
Vermilion Parish’s residents and businesspeople make the most of their abundant natural resources by cultivating and attracting individuals and businesses that pull oil and gas from the earth, harvest creatures from the sea and the bayous, graze cattle on its lands and grow rice, sugarcane and soy beans in its fertile soil.
Businesses that sell to and service these enterprises understandably gravitate to the Parish, too. For instance, those who provide oil eld equipment and services abound in Vermilion Parish. Consequently, there are plenty of professional machinists, welders, pipe tters, helicopter pilots and so forth, according to Anne Falgout of the new Vermilion Economic Development Alliance (VEDA).
Major Vermilion Parish employers who support the oil and gas industry in one way or another include Schlumberger Inc. in Maurice, Shaw Global Energy Services, Inc. in Delcambre and EcoServ in Abbeville.
In addition to providing xed wing pilot training, aircraft rental and a full range of ground services for airplanes of all types and sizes, Vector Aviation at the Abbeville Airport regularly provides fuel and services to 25 helicopters that operate daily, ferrying people, emergency parts and lightweight supplies like fresh produce to the oil and gas platforms.
“ is area has been very oil eld-driven for the past 50 years or so,” explained Mike Mouton of Vector. “Some of those platforms are 150 miles out into the Gulf. It takes an hour to reach them by helicopter or 12 hours to reach them by boat. ese helicopters provide a very important service and we make the owners’ and pilots’ lives easier.”
e Port of Vermilion, Abbeville Harbor and Terminal District, is an industrial park on the Vermilion River that houses tenants that want the ability to do business by truck or by river. Many of those tenants also service the oil and gas industry by o ering marine fabrication, construction, logistics services and marine contracting/transportation, while others service the marine industry, according to Jay Campbell,
executive director. “We have 400-plus employees working at the Port of Vermilion
who earn $23 million-plus in salaries so we have a huge impact on our district, Abbeville, the Parish and the entire state. People come from all over Acadiana to work here in positions ranging from clerical to metal fabricating to transportation and crane operators. Two of our tenants even have their own tugs and barges, so they employ captains and mates,” Campbell said.
ose tenants engaged in oil and gas services are Cajun Maritime, Grand Isle Shipyard Inc., Gulf Coast Marine Fabricators, Stallion O shore Quarters and Tanner Services, LLC. e port is also the home of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Pelican and to Maritime International which provides marine fenders and mooring bollards, engineering/design services, laboratory performance testing, heavy steel fabrication, and naval systems.
Marine-related businesses prosper in the Parish, thanks to not only those shing the Gulf, but also to the many sheries which raise and sell craw sh, shrimp, alligators and pogy. Packaging those pogy bait sh for shipment to East Coast shermen creates work for many Vermilion residents as does processing the tiny sh into sh oil supplements and animal feed additives at the Omega Protein Corporation processing plant in Abbeville.
“ ose aquaculture-related industries are huge and have a lot of future potential if the owners choose to ramp them up and capture a bigger share of the market,” Falgout of VEDA stated.
Vermilion Parish also has rms which process and add value to locally-grown rice and sugarcane like the Planters Rice Mill, Stansel’s Gourmet Rice and Steen’s Syrup Mill.
ese long-standing industries in Vermilion Parish continue to grow as they serve the oil and gas, agriculture and aquaculture industries.
Nearly 40 percent of Vermilion Parish’s 783,000 acres is currently devoted to agriculture and aquaculture, bringing $300 million into the Parish annually, according to Andrew Granger, County Agricultural Agent for Vermilion Parish. Rice and cattle have been huge cash crops in the region for the past 50 years and sugarcane was added to the mix in the late 1980s. Soy beans and wheat are also raised by some. U

HISTORY
ABOUT US
The Port of Vermilion was established in the mid eighties by the Abbeville Harbor & Terminal District toaccommodate growing demand for water front sites for industrial locations. Since then it has seen the oil industryboom and bust, with resident companies coming and going over the years. Today the port is a diverse andgrowing terminal that provides considerable economic value to the district, which extends parish-wide.
The mission of the Abbeville Harbor & Terminal District is to effectively serve the District by creating jobs andbusiness opportunities in the region. This mission is primarily accomplished through responsible managementof district and port assets in an environmentally sensitive manner, and also through continued growth anddevelopment of industry and business across the district area.
The Abbeville Harbor & Terminal District (AHTD) facilitates economic growth of the communities in which itoperates by maximizing the flow of trade and commerce. The District Commission is comprised of the 3rd, 7th,and a portion of the 2nd Wards of Vermilion Parish, in the areas surrounding the Vermilion River south of Abbevilleand Intracoastal City.
The AHTD was created by Act No. 253 of the 1954 regular session of the Louisiana Legislature as a politicalsubdivision of the state of Louisiana. It is governed by a board of commissioners consisting of six members whoserve six-year terms. The board of commissioners serves without compensation or benefits, and is charged withregulating matters relating to commerce, navigation and traffic in the best interests of the public.

Vermilion Parish’s farms are mostly family-owned and they are seasonal employers, Granger said. Extra labor is only brought in at planting and harvest times, in most cases. Rice farmers double as aquaculturists because they rotate between using their land to grow rice and to raise craw sh, giving the soil a chance to regenerate between rice crops.
“ e Vermilion Economic Development Alliance is focused on retaining the Parish’s existing businesses and helping to make those businesses more resilient to market changes. To do this we have initiated a business visitation program,” Falgout explained. “We are also planning to educate local residents about how to start a business and are recruiting new businesses to come here to ll any gaps we have in terms of necessary goods and services.”
“We don’t want there to be any missed opportunities, so we are looking at what makes sense for this area and we are open to any good ideas. We are even planning to meet with our local farmers to discuss how we can transform each individual operation into more of a commercial entity,” she added.
“We have also assembled a team of local and regional people who can respond when a company expresses interest in locating in Vermilion Parish,” Falgout explained.
Ryan LaGrange, Manager of Workforce Development for the Lafayette Economic Development Authority, would likely be one of those experts.
“When a company considers relocating or expanding to this area, we have to present ourselves on a regional basis in order to be competitive. ey want to look at the commute area around any potential site so they would be asking about workforce availability within a one-hour radius,” LaGrange explained.
“Roughly one-third of the Vermilion Parish workforce is employed within the Parish. Another third commute to Lafayette to work and the balance go everywhere else in Acadiana to work. I know that about 800
Vermilion Parish residents travel to Baton Rouge every day, for instance,” he continued.
e largest number work in health care, followed by retail, then oil and gas, manufacturing and agriculture.
“We have a high per capita income – approximately $34,030 per year on average – and low unemployment, particularly among those working in industries that produce wealth for the region. Omega Protein, for instance, ships its products worldwide, bringing its pro ts to Vermilion Parish,” LaGrange explained.
“ e highest paying jobs within the Parish generally go to those with a technical degree or an associate’s degree from a community college. Area schools have been adept at developing programs to meet the needs of area businesses. South Louisiana Community College’s Gulf Area Campus in Abbeville, for instance, o ers a program in industrial agriculture mechanics technology which has a 100 percent placement rate.”
ose with a bachelor’s degree (approximately 16 percent of the local workforce) generally nd work in Lafayette, he said. e University of Louisiana – Lafayette o ers more than 120 undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.
“All of us are working together to try to attract more high-impact industries. We are also trying attract more national and international that work with and supply the concentration of industries that are already here,” LaGrange stated.

e medical landscape of Vermilion Parish is extensive, with virtually all health care specialties and subspecialties represented. e parish is well-equipped with two accredited hospital campuses, along with a number of excellent health clinics and physician o ces.
ABBEVILLE GENERALAbbeville General has had a rebirth! Since they are SO MUCH
MORE than a hospital, they have decided to drop the term, “Hospital,” adopt a NEW LOGO, and liken themselves to the Whooping Crane (one of the world’s rarest birds that came close to extinction and is now thriving in Southwestern Louisiana today). Abbeville General is committed to providing Access to Quality Care Close to Home in a safe environment to the residents of their community and surrounding areas, and to be recognized as the Healthcare System of Choice for Vermilion Parish.
Abbeville General has made many physical improvements, has added various value-added services, and has maintained their top priority for 50 years (since 1966), which is to continually meet the health care needs of their community through progress and a commitment to excellence. Many patients ARE coming home for their health care, instead of traveling to nearby cities. ey are utilizing the Primary Care Medical Homes that are strategically placed in three cities throughout the parish for their primary care needs, as well as the various o -site centers that o er lab and X-ray services. ey are utilizing the Telemedicine services to see specialists in a timely manner. State-of-the-art equipment is provided by each and every department to ensure the highest diagnostic and surgical care. ere is no wonder patients are coming home!
Abbeville General has earned numerous awards for their quality care, including the coveted Top Performer Award by the Joint Commission for Pneumonia and Surgical Care. e dedicated sta at Abbeville General works tirelessly to ensure not only patient safety, but patient satisfaction as well.
e newly remodeled Emergency Department (ED) at Abbeville General continues to provide 24-hour emergency care with all modern
equipment:• e Stroke Robot o ers the ED physician 24/7 access to a
neurologist through an a liation with Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital. • Houses two trauma rooms, a bariatric room, isolation room, and a
decontamination room.• Encompasses 9,085 square feet.• Has nine treatment rooms with 18 patient care spaces.• Is paid in full with sales tax dollars from residents in Vermilion Parish! e Cancer Center of Acadiana at Abbeville General (CCA)
provides chemotherapy infusions, as well as other infusion therapies. e enhanced services provided by CCA include board-certi ed oncologists and collaboration with Lafayette General Medical Center’s Radiation Oncology Unit. e CCA provides true comprehensive cancer care, dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of cancer for the whole person- mind, body, and spirit. is whole-patient approach helps their patients ght cancer while maintaining a hold on their life … at home.
e Sleep Center at Abbeville General, located on the third oor, provides overnight sleep studies for evaluation and diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders. Sleep studies are performed in a comfortable, home-like environment and can determine if someone would bene t from treatment. All overnight studies are performed by licensed registered polysomnograph technicians and interpreted by a board certi ed sleep specialist.
e Surgery Department includes three operating suites, two minor procedure suites, an endoscopy suite, a Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, a day surgery/outpatient unit and a holding area. A wide variety of services are o ered, including minor procedures, bone marrow biopsies, inpatient surgeries and outpatient surgeries. Due to technical advances and new, minimally invasive procedures in the operating room, the majority of patients have same day surgery and are able to return home shortly after surgery. Abbeville General also o ers high-de nition endoscopy, as well as laparoscopy for certain surgeries.
Interventional pain therapy, performed by a full-time anesthesiologist, provides pain relief through the use of nerve blocks for patients su ering U

with chronic pain of the lower back and legs. is is accomplished by epidural steroid injections – a minimally invasive procedure that helps relieve back and leg pain caused by in amed spinal nerves.
Acute pain, associated with total knee replacements, shoulder surgery, and other orthopedic surgeries, is completely eliminated for three days, with a nerve block, allowing patients to begin physical therapy the same day of surgery – pain free. Once the patient returns home, there is usually minimal discomfort.
Other highly technological diagnostic equipment used at Abbeville General includes: Full Field Digital Mammography- the gold standard for breast imaging; DXA Bone Densitometry; GE Medical System 16 Slice CT Scanner; Nuclear Non-Stress Test; EKG/Holter Monitoring/Stress testing; EEG; Echocardiography; Arterial Blood Gas Procurement. Also performed is myocardial perfusion imaging, a noninvasive imaging test that shows how well blood perfuses the heart muscle.
Obstetrics/Nursery Department is where life begins at Abbeville General. ere are family waiting areas for the convenience of family and visitors. e unit contains two LDR rooms in which mothers will labor, deliver and recover in the privacy of their own room and one Antepartum room in the event testing procedures are needed during the pregnancy. ese rooms contain fetal monitoring equipment to measure contractions and the baby’s heartbeat, plus other equipment needed for the birth. After delivery mothers recover in one of the four remodeled postpartum rooms. e HUGS System, where all babies are tagged at delivery, ensures the safety of all babies born at Abbeville General.
e Primary Care Medical Homes, located in Abbeville, Maurice and Erath, o er primary care to all residents across Vermilion Parish and are all certi ed by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations. In these rural health clinics, a variety of family health services are o ered, including EPSDT screenings for pediatric patients, obstetric and gynecological services, internal medicine, nephrology and geriatrics. A number of community services are also o ered, such as laboratory, immunizations, u shots, blood pressure checks and more. In the Abbeville location, patients can see a variety of specialists at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport, via a computer, using Telemedicine, to diagnose and treat many health conditions. Appointments are taken, and walk-ins are welcome. For more information, check out Abbeville General on Facebook and its website: www.abbgen.net.
ABROM KAPLAN MEMORIAL HOSPITALWhile many rural hospitals have struggled in the complex health care
marketplace, one hospital is celebrating notable accomplishments in the industry and securing its future. Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital
(AKMH) is the newest member of a growing group of rural hospitals joining Acadiana’s largest nonpro t health system, Lafayette General Health (LGH).
Since opening its doors in 1958, AKMH has grown to o er a variety of services including: Pediatrics, General Surgery, (including Laparoscopic), Lab Services, Digital Radiology, CT Scanning, Digital Mammography, Ultrasound, Endoscopic and Colonoscopy Procedures, Physical Rehabilitation, Home Health, Inpatient Psychiatric Services and Extended Stay.
rough the years, Abrom Kaplan has remained viable and competitive, bene tting from a partial-management arrangement made with Lafayette General in 2002. e arrangement allowed the hospital to pursue strategies, access nancial analysis and participate in group-purchasing discounts. It promoted the continued prosperity of AKMH, as well as introduced new opportunities for the hospital to thrive.
In 2014, Abrom Kaplan was recognized for successes achieved through the nationwide program “Harm Across the Board.” e hospital excelled in providing safety across the board, including a 20 percent reduction in preventable hospital readmissions. Other areas of notable improvement included reduction of falls, adverse drug events, surgical site infections and other infections.
As a role model for other rural hospitals, AKMH hosted a Rural Trauma Team Development Course in August 2014. e course educated hospital ER sta and other rural health care providers on the current standards of care in the ER environment.
Abrom Kaplan ended 2014 on the up note, being named among the Top 20 Critical Access Hospitals in the Country in Financial Stability by the National Rural Health Association for the second consecutive year.
ese successes and plans for new opportunities led the hospital to sign a multi-year lease with LGH. LGH assumes expanded management and operational control of the hospital, its physical plant and equipment, e ective June 1. e move to fully partner with Lafayette General o ers patients in Vermilion Parish access to more physicians and a full network of additional resources. e long-term arrangement will serve the residents of Kaplan and the surrounding area with access to more services, lower costs, more options in quality care and still unseen opportunities in the future.
Among the changes enjoyed at AKMH, facility-wide upgrades have been made inside and out at AKMH since 2013. e most recent facelifts, noticeable by the fall of 2015, include new paint on the hospital’s exterior, along with new impact-rated exterior doors and windows. Inside the facility, patient rooms received a fresh coat of paint, new furniture and environmental AC units for better air quality.
