Section 1. Brief introduction to the study

The Cognitive Aging Ancillary Study (Mex-Cog)

linked to the Mexican Health and Aging Study

(MHAS) was designed to measure the prevalence

of dementia and cognitive deterioration in Mexico

through data collection and strategies

harmonized with other countries, including the

U.S., to maximize the comparability of the data.

The study includes a series of tasks to measure

the cognitive function of study subjects and self-

report questions about memory, depressive

symptoms, exposure to lead and history of skull

trauma.

In total, the questionnaire for the informant is

composed of three parts: the first part was

adapted from the Community screening interview

for dementia (CSI-D), the second part was

adapted from the HAS scale, and the third part

consists of 17 questions about care needs. The

second part was only applied if the informant

reported two or more limitations in the first part.

Sección 1. Breve introducción al estudio

El Estudio Complementario de Envejecimiento

Cognitivo (Mex-Cog) vinculado al Estudio

Nacional de Salud y Envejecimiento en México

(ENASEM) fue diseñado para medir la

prevalencia de demencia y de deterioro cognitivo

en México a través de recolección de datos y

estrategias armonizadas con otros países para

maximizar la comparabilidad de los datos. El

estudio incluye una serie de tareas para medir la

función cognitiva del sujeto de estudio y unas

preguntas de auto-reporte sobre la memoria,

síntomas depresivos, exposición a plomo e

historia de trauma de cráneo.

En total, el cuestionario para el informante se

compone de tres partes: la primera parte fue

adaptada de la Entrevista sobre Demencia en la

Comunidad (CSI-D por sus siglas en inglés), la

segunda parte fue adaptada de la escala HAS, y

la tercera parte consta de 17 preguntas sobre las

necesidades de cuidado. La segunda parte solo

se aplicó si el informante reportó dos o más

limitaciones en la primera parte.

Section 2. Notes to Version 3 data files (March 2020)

Below is a description of a change made to Version 2 (July 2019) of the Informant Interview dataset.

2.1. Changes to the Raw Data a. New Variable: mc_tipent_informant_16

A new variable was created to indicate if the informant completed a short or a long interview. If the

adequate informant reported none or only one limitation in the first part of the interview composed with

the Community screening interview for dementia (CSI-D), the second part was skipped. This new variable

also indicates if the interview was incomplete.

Section 3. Notes to Version 2 data files (July 2019)

Below is a description of changes made to Version 1 (November 2018) of the Informant Interview dataset.

These changes were due to coding errors. It provides the name of the corrected (modified) variables, the

corrections made, and a frequency table for previous and updated versions. Three variables were

changed as follows:

3.1. Variable: CognitiveDec_attempts

The attempts variable is constructed by adding the maximum number of points for each task that was

attempted. The maximum number of points for each task had not been assigned correctly. Overall, the

change in the distribution of the resulting constructed variable was negligible. The range of the corrected

variable is narrower than the previous one.

Corrections: Intermediate variables for the sum had been scored incorrectly.

Similar to CognitiveDec_attempts (above), the attempts variable is constructed by adding the maximum

number of points for each task that was attempted. The maximum number of points for each task had

Section 4. Introduction to the Mex-Cog Raw Variables Codebook

The following codebook summarizes the raw

data from the Mex-Cog. The total sample

selected for the study was 3,250, of which only

those who completed the cognitive interview are

considered (n=2,072). Raw variables are named

using a standard format using a prefix “mi” to

indicate the Mex-Cog Informant Interview

questionnaires, followed by the letter “q” and the

variable number in the questionnaire, and then

followed by a suffix indicating the year the data

was collected (in this case “16”).

Some variables have been assigned special

missing values that identify the reasons why an

answer was not available. It is important to note

that special missing values are available for

STATA and SAS users, but are NOT visible in

SPSS.

The following is a list of special missing values

used in the raw variables:

".i" Incomplete questionnaire, subject

interrupted interview and did not continue

".s" Skipped question due to a previous

answer o set of answers

".l" Physical limitation (visual or motor) that

prevents the subject from completing the item or

task

Sección 4. Introducción al Libro de Códigos de las Variables brutas del Mex-Cog

El siguiente libro de códigos resume los datos

brutos del Mex-Cog. El número total de la

muestra seleccionada para el estudio fue de

3250, de las cuales sólo se consideran aquellas

que completaron la entrevista cognitiva

(n=2042). Se les asignó nombres a las variables

brutas usando como prefijo “mc” para indicar al

cuestionario de la Evaluación Cognitiva del Mex-

Cog, seguido por la letra “q” y el numero de la

variable en el cuestionario, y finalmente seguido

por el sufijo que indica el año en el que se

recogió la información (en este caso “16”).

A algunas variables se les asignó valores

faltantes especiales que identifican las razones

por las cuales una respuesta no está disponible.

Es importante notar que los valores especiales

faltantes están disponibles para usuarios de

STATA y SAS, sin embargo, NO son visibles en

SPSS.

La siguiente es una lista de los valores

especiales faltantes usados en las variables

brutas:

".i" Cuestionario incompleto, sujeto

interrumpió la entrevista y decidió no continuar.

".s" Salto en la pregunta por respuesta a

preguntas anteriores

".l" Sujeto tiene una limitación física (visual o

auditiva) que le impide completar el item o la

tarea

".c" Short interview due to low score in

MMSE. Subject was not asked beyond question

Note regarding short interviews: In total, 1,296

subjects completed a short interview. However,

the number of interviews that skipped questions

28 to 42 varied, having between 1,292 and 1,296

informant interview’s with a special missing

value “.c” in these questions.

Nota en referencia a la entrevista corta: En total,

1,296 sujetos completaron una entrevista corta.

informantes con un valor especial ".c" en estas

preguntas.

Section 6. Introduction to the Mex-Cog Constructed Variables Codebook

The following codebook summarizes

constructed variables from the Mex-Cog. The

total sample selected for the study was 3,250, of

which only those who completed the cognitive

interview are considered (n=2,072). Constructed

variables were scored and grouped by Type of

Decline (cognitive or functional). The

constructed variables were named using a

standard format using a prefix “Dx_iy”, were “D”

indicates the Type of Decline and “i” the item (i.e.

D1_i1). For more information about how these

variables were created and what items are

included in each domain please download the

“Study on Cognitive Aging Linked to MHAS:

Methodological Document” available here.

In addition to the special missing values used

with the raw variables to indicate different

reasons why an answer was not available, other

special missing values were used for the created

variables. The flowcharts show how these

missing values were assigned. It is important to

note that special missing values are available for

STATA and SAS users, but are NOT visible in

SPSS.
