What is an armistice?

• An armistice is a contract signed between countries to stop fighting. It ends hostilities between armies in time of war.

• For example: It’s a contract signed between Germany and the Allied nations for the peace in 1918.

• November 11th, is the birthday of the signing of the armistice of the World War I (1914-1918).

• This day, the United States thank all veterans of all wars.

• After four years of war (1914-1918), the armistice was signed in France, in Compiegne, in the “Wagon de l’Armistice”.

Creator of Veteran’s day

• In 1954, Veterans Service Organizations asked the US Congress to change the word “armistice” to “veteran”.

• On May 26th, 1954, Dwight Eisenhower, the US President, signed the Act to confirm the change.

• The day officially becomes a day to honor American veterans of all wars.
