The Jackson Public Schools’ JROTC Program will host
special events to honor area veterans in the
Jackson Community.
The guest speaker will be Command Sergeant Major (CSM) Michele Jones. CSM (Retired) Jones served as the 9th CSM of the Army Reserve from October 2002 through August 2006. She
retired on March I, 2007 after 25 years of service. She distinguished herself as being the first woman selected as class
president at the United States Sergeants Major Academy (Class 48), the first woman to serve as a division CSM, and culminating as the first woman to serve as the CSM of any of the Army's Components, Active or Reserve. Prior to her retirement, she held the highest Noncommissioned Officer position of any woman in The Army. As the CSM of the Army Reserve, she served as the Chief of the Army Reserve advisor on all enlisted soldier matters. She represented the Army Reserve enlisted soldier at all levels within The Army, Department of Defense, Congressional and in the media. She served on multiple councils, boards and testified before Congressional Committees and Subcommittees that made decisions, recommendations and legislative changes affecting soldiers and their families. Additionally, this year’s program is entitled “Angels in Disguise” directed by Ms. Jamie Allen, the founder of Richard Allen School of Performing Arts (RASoPA), C/LTC Ambria McD. and C/MAJ Donnebra B; the program cover was designed by C/MAJ JaMichael C.

Guest speaker for the program is Lieutenant Colonel Aundra Moore, Professor of Aerospace Science, Detachment 006 at Jackson State University. Area Veterans are welcome and encouraged to attend. There will be a presentation by the Provine JROTC Drill Team.

Guest speaker is Command Sergeant Major Maurice A. Thorpe, Senior Enlisted Advisor of Eastern Sector, United States Military Entrance Processing Command. Command Sergeant Major Thorpe joined the U.S. Army in September 1986. He attended basic training and advanced individual training at Fort Bliss, Texas, and served as an Operations and Intelligence Specialist for Air Defense. He has served numerous assignments and has held various leadership positions. He is a graduate of Class 56 of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy. Prior to his current assignment, he served as Command Sergeant Major for the U.S. Army Chicago Recruiting Battalion. He completed all required military schooling at the top of his class to include the U.S. Army Command Sergeants Major Course, First Sergeants Course, Guidance Counselor Course, and the Army Leadership Awareness Training Course at the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute. He graduated from Advanced Noncommissioned Officer’s Course and the USAREC Station Commander’s Course. He has completed the Army Battle Staff Course, and earned his Bachelors Degree in Marketing and Organizational Leadership from Excelsior College, Albany, N.Y.

Guest Speaker for the program is Colonel (Retired) Martha A. McRavin-Oliver. She is a graduate of Temple High School, Vicksburg, MS. She received a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from Alcorn State University, a Master Degree in Public Policy from Jackson State University, a Master Degree in Community and Agency Counseling from Mississippi College and a specialist degree in Guidance and Counseling from Jackson State University. She is currently working on her Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership at Jackson State University, which she plans to complete in 2011. She currently serves as Senior Army Instructor at Yazoo City High School, Yazoo City, MS.

Highlights of this year’s program includes an Award and Recognition Ceremony, patriotic songs by the High School Choir and JROTC, patriotic poem and “Taps” played by the High School band. Lieutenant Justin Green will be the Guest Speaker. LT Green is a member of the Mississippi National Guard. He is currently a Lead Teacher at Siwell Middle School. Local veterans, parents, first responders, community organizations, alumni, as
well as the general public are invited.

Guest speaker for the occasion is LTC Wilton C. Jackson, a native of McComb, MS. He earned a Bachelors of Science Degree and a Masters Degree in Accounting from Jackson States University. He is currently assigned as the Commander of the 3rd Battalion 349th (IN) Logistical Support Battalion at Camp Shelby, MS.
Highlights of the special program include music from Jim Hill’s outstanding band and patriotic selections from the school’s renowned choir.
