Volunteers Recognized Flag Day Golf Tournament
Annual Picnic
At the annual Volunteer Appreciation Banquet, held in April, all of the home’s volunteers were thanked for their many hours of service. Each year, a few volunteers are highlighted as the Volunteers of the Year. Pictured above are the Volunteers of the Year for 2013. They are, left to right, Juanita Cook, Norman Brant, Marsha Parrish, Don Sides, and Ralph Barks. See Page 2 for a list of other volunteers who have volunteered for 100+ hours.
Family and friends gathered on our back lawn for a wonderful day of food and fun at our annual Veteran/Family Picnic. We are thankful for the joint effort of our staff and volunteers, along with soldiers from the
1140th Battalion of the Army National Guard. This day was also made possible with the help and financial support from the Perryville Elks, some of whom are pictured below preparing the food for our meal. Its safe to say that a good time was had by all.
The 18th year for our Flag Day Golf Tournament proved to be another great success! Pictured above is the winning team representing the MO National Guard Recruiting & Retention Battalion. These guys are multi-talented; prior to playing a great game of golf they grilled the meat for lunch. See Page 3 for complete list of sponsors and teams.

NEW Ombudsman: Jay Hoffer is the new Ombudsman for our Veterans Home. This is a volunteer position under the direction of the Missouri Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. Jay will make regular visits to the home, and is here to listen and work with our Veteran residents to find solutions to problems. He can also provide the Veterans with information about their rights. His services are free and confidential. Although he is volunteer, he is supervised and trained by people who are experienced in working with residents in long-term care facilities.Jay lives in Perryville and is a retired Navy Veteran himself.
NEW technology: Our recreation room is equipped with computers for use by our Veterans. Many times it is used for games such as solitaire. It also makes it possible for our Veterans to communicate via Skype. Here Veteran Nathan Gunther is shown visiting with his granddaughter, LaSondra, who lives in Northwest Italy. They have not seen each other in over two years.
What’s New?
NEW Piano: Thanks to the generous donations from several individuals and organizations, we were able to purchase a new piano for our chapel. One of our Veterans, Ken Torbet, is shown here trying it out. We’ve been told by all who play it that the sound quality is wonderful. We are so fortunate to have this new addition to our chapel.
NEW Activity Bus: Veteran Jim Slinkard gives a thumbs-up to the new 15-passenger Activity Bus. This vehicle has ramp access, rather than a lift, making it easier and safer to load and unload. There is also more space in the bus for wheelchair lock-downs, meaning that more Veterans can participate in activities outside of the home. The purchase of this vehicle was made possible by a generous bequest from the Estate of Ruby Estes. Ruby’s son, Billy Estes, was a resident in our home. She stated in her will that this gift was being given to the home because of the good care that Billy received.
NEW cross. Lynn Akins makes crosses for a living. When he came to the home to visit a rela-tive, he offered to make one for our chapel as a gift to all Veter-ans. What a beautiful addition to our chapel.

He was truly blessed to have had such kind and caring people. It was so comforting to us, to know he was safe and happy in your care. You are truly special people, and we know God will richly bless you for it.
