Harold Baggenstoss Post 1260
From the Commander
BY BRUCE MALTERUD
Good day all,
Sept. upon us already and that also means fall is coming and with that is our meeting on Tuesday Sept. 5th at 7:00 p.m. at the Bemidji Eagles Club rooms.
August was a very busy month for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1260. To start the month out on the 2nd I met with the officers of the McIntosh VFW down in Dilworth as that’s where the Quartermaster lives and is hard for him to travel. And again on the 16th of the month in Erskine where they held their regular meeting for the month. At this meeting they surrendered their charter for Post 6891, McIntosh. Sorry to see this happen but, they are not alone in these small towns, as the Chief Inspector for the district I picked up everything that pertained to the VFW. The members, some transferred to the Bemidji post and oth-ers went else where.
We also had military funeral honors for our Chaplain, Charles Brown, and past commander of the post. Not a very good day for us. The Color Guard posted colors at Sanford Hospital for a Pow Wow for Healing and on the 12th post colors for the Annual Salute held at the Back Woods Bar, in remembering those that served in the past and the present. The proceeds are donated to the VFW Post 1260 and then is distributed out to needy veterans and families in need in the communi-ty. A big thank you goes out to those folks that own the Back Woods and also to the 4-wheelers and motorcycles that rode that day and to all that donated to the cause.
We will be taking the colors to the Headwaters of the Mississippi on Sept. 1st to meet up with a group of veterans that will be paddling the river in remembering those veterans that were killed in last fifteen years. And also to raise awareness and provide information on issues that veterans face. This is called Operation Heartland and they will be presenting a flag made of wood to the post with some of the initials engraved on it. They will be going all the way down to the gulf and making stops along the way that have VFW posts on or along the river, I believe 44 in all and when they have the flags distributed to those post they will have delivered all the names of those killed in that war of terrorism.

On the 22nd thru the 24th I will be attending the Fall Conference in St Cloud which will be very interesting as I will be giving a seminar on scouting as I am the state VFW Chairperson for the boys and girl scouts this year. I will be contacting those boy scout clubs that have those kids that had earned the Eagle scout badge and the girls that earned their gold awards and are still in school. They have a chance to write an essay and the winner that goes on to state has a chance to receive a $5,000.00 scholarship. I will be turning the meeting duties over to the Senior Vice for the Sept. meeting as I will be attending the wedding of my grandson that evening. Good luck John Naastad and have a good meeting. On the lighter side: A man comes home from an exhausting day at work, plops down on the couch in front of the television, and tells his wife, “ Get me a beer before it starts”. The wife sighs and gets him a beer. Fifteen minutes later, he says, “Get me another beer before it starts.” She looks cross, but fetches another beer and slams it down next to him. He finishes that beer and a few minutes later says, “Quick, get me another beer, it’s going to start any minute.” The wife is furious. She yells at him “Is that all you’re going to do tonight? Drink beer and sit in front of that TV? You’re nothing but a lazy, drunken, fat slob, and furthermore....” The man sighs and says, “It’s started....” Commander Bruce 218-854-7499
FAMILY ASSISTANCE CENTERS You make the call, we make the difference. Minnesota Family Assistance Centers are geographically dispersed throughout the state to offer resources, referrals and support to all Servicemembers and military family members. FACs are connected to your communities and the military units in the surrounding area. They understand that asking for support is difficult for military families — they also know that challenges occur that require outside support. No matter what the challenge or question, the FAC supports military families. FACs are local resource centers for Servicemembers and military family members. The FAC staff provides information and referrals to local resources as well as state and federal military support programs. FAC support staff are trained professionals that understand the challenges associated with the military lifestyle. When challenges occur, you need timely and accurate infor-mation, compassion and reliable support. No matter what challenges arise, the military family can be assured that a FAC will help with solutions.

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
In honor of our past Com-
mander, Chaplain, and long
time friend, Charles Brown:
May the Lord our God bless us
all present here, to memorial-
ize those who lived and died to preserve liberty and free-
dom in our nation and in the world. And may the Lord our
God remember all those whose sacrifice gave this nation
its greatness, progress, and riches. May our memory and
all of those who served in the armed forces, be an honora-
ble one, full of thanksgiving to the Lord; and remember
with much love and mercy those who died in the service of
our Country, whether on the air, or on the land or in the
sea. Be with us all and provide us with traveling mercy as
we return to our homes.
Amen.

HOT OFF THE PRESS
WWII Veteran Was Part of Little-known 'Ghost Army' The Advocate, Baton Rouge, La. | 13 Aug 2017 | by George Morris Formed a few months before D-Day, the Ghost Army's job was to fool Germans about the lo-cation of American forces. De-ception is as old as war itself, but this was the first U.S. unit whose entire job was pulling the wool over the enemy's eyes. And pull it they did -- repeated-ly, and with remarkable suc-cess. In the French town of Brest, the Ghost Army convinced defend-ers the Americans were attack-ing from the left and right flanks, when the real attack was coming up the middle. On the Moselle River, they covered a gaping hole in Gen. George Patton's lines. When the U.S. 9th Army crossed the Rhine River, German forces remained miles away, awaiting an attack from a largely imaginary force. "That operation was so suc-cessful, they went 25 miles before they had their first casu-alty. How about that?" Wilson said. "They gave us credit with saving between 30,000 and 40,000 American lives and 10,000 German lives. Wasn't that wonderful?" www.military.com

Greetings VFW Auxiliary Members,
September is the start of our annual drive to recruit new
members to our Auxiliary. It is also when we start to “re-
recruit” current members who are on the books, but una-
ble to attend our meetings. We hope each active mem-
ber will do their best to bring in just one new member. If
we all did that, our group would double in size! It is not
always easy to find new people who want to join yet an-
other organization. However, it may help to remind pro-
spective members that our sole purpose is to help out our local veterans and their
families. We do whatever we can for them, and count on new ideas and suggestions
to help us find more ways to help the veterans and their families. That new person
you bring in may be someone with awesome ideas to share with us. We welcome
perspective new members to come and sit in on a meeting or two to learn if this is
something they want to be a part of. If you need a refresher on the requirements of
who is eligible for membership in the VFW Auxiliary, I hope you will contact me and I
can get you that information. Thank you for any help you can provide in recruiting
new members to the group, and/or encouraging those who are not currently active
members to come back and be a part of the group.
As our children start back into the swing of being in school, I hope you will look
through the most recent General Orders and find the coloring contest rules and in-
formation. Our local kids could certainly be the ones to win those contests, and is
an excellent way to keep them informed about our flag; Betsy Ross; and our veter-
ans in general. Let me know if you need information about this.
We hope you will come be a part of our group each first Monday evening of the
month at the Bemidji Eagles at 7:00 p.m. We have a good group, and it can only get
better by you becoming a part of it too. Bring your expertise and innovation and
come join us.
I look forward to seeing you soon.
Best Regards,
