Who is rich? One who is content with his lot. Pirkei Avot, Ethics of our Fathers
Gratitude. Appreciation. Thankfulness.
All words we use around this time of year. When I think about it, it seems strange that we need a holiday to remind us to be grateful for what we have, and even then, it’s often more about the turkey and side dishes. Judaism provides us with the opportunity to be aware of our gratefulness daily. It is considered a mitzvah to say 100 blessings every day, and blessings are the Jewish way to express gratitude. This comes from Deuteronomy 10:12, where Moses tells the Jewish people, “What (mah) does G-d ask of you?” The Talmud explains that the word mah can be read as me’ah, meaning 100. And no two should be the same. We all experience days when finding three blessings might be difficult. But our own liturgy helps to start us out on the right track. Our daily morning prayers begin the moment we awaken, thanking G-d for waking us up and returning our souls to us. There is a blessing thanking G-d for returning our souls pure, so we have the opportunity each day to choose how we will live it. There is even a blessing for going to the bathroom, recognizing that our health depends upon our bodies working properly. Setting up this “attitude of gratitude” changes the entire perspective for our day, if we only allow it to do so.
Sometimes we move through our lives numb. We go through the motions, live our routines without thinking, without mindfulness. If we let a little awareness into our souls each day, we can create moments of gratitude around the mundane. We might even find blessing within the mundane. We will be able to begin to habituate ourselves to this new way of blessing, and our lives will be all the richer for it. Might as well start during this month when we celebrate our thankfulness.
B'shalom,
Cantor Jessica Roskin

• It allows us an opportunity to give tzedakah on the holiest week of the year
• It helps us understand the consciousness and struggles of the poor
• It provides our religious school students an opportunity to participate in the food drive
• It allows us to reflect on how fortunate we are to have the means to purchase food.
• It shows how our collective temple family can help heal the world
Look at all the food you brought! Thanks for making a difference! Be proud of our awesome Temple
Those of us who fast during Yom Kippur, get a taste of what hunger feels like during this reflective day. There are 100's of Jewish and non-Jewish men, women and children in our community who feel hunger pains every day.
Once again, YOU, the members of Temple Emanu-Ell have delivered on the request to donate food. Nobody can give enough to feed every hungry person every day, but together, we collected TONS (figuratively and literally) of food that will be distributed by local agencies to those they serve.
Yet, the food drive does so much more than feed hungry people.

Urban MinistryUrban Ministry is the inner city ministry of the United Methodist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Their mission is to serve poor and low-income persons in the Birmingham area with programs of compassion and wholeness. Compassion programs address immediate human needs, while wholeness programs address longterm human needs. Although Urban Ministry maintains its historic identity as a faith-based organization, all of their programs are offered on a completely non-sectarian basis.
The Clothing Bank is grateful for all the generous donations we have received. We still need men's casual shoes, pants and long-sleeved shirts. We are also needing plus-size women's clothing and shoes in size 9 or larger.
We're calling all knitters and crocheters. We are trying to build up a stock of hats, scarves, and mitten/gloves for the winter. Any size is great, but we serve mostly men. We are also happy to accept donations of leftover or unneeded yarn.
Special thanks to the Hermione & Edward Friend Community Fund of the Grafman Endowment Fund for providing materials to facilitate our new Temple Emanu-El Clothes Bank.
Don't forget about the TEE Clothing Bank!
Feeling Gelty 2018
We have the cure for feeling guilty this holiday season by Feeling Gelty! We are excited to report this year we will be teaming up with Trinity United Methodist Church and will once again be giving back to the community by partnering with Urban Ministry for our Feeling Gelty Program. Urban Ministry was founded in 1978 and it helps those living in the West End Community. They offer several programs from gardening to homeless prevention to a life skills internship AND they have a ‘pay as you can’ Community Cafe.
We will be collecting gifts and opening a 'Christmas Store' for families with children between the ages of 1-17. There are several different opportunities in which you can give this year: Volunteering, purchasing gifts or making a donation.

For more information, please contact Anne Ovson at 205.616.8551 or [email protected]. Also, please be on lookout for Sign Up Genius!
We will be collecting gifts through December 8, 2018. The “store” will be open on Saturday, December 15 from

8 Youth & Education
As we approach of secular holiday season, may we be ever mindful of how our Jewish values intertwine with our Thanksgiving holiday. May we forever be grateful for those who bring meaning, purpose and love into our lives.
How to Have a Jewish Thanksgiving
1. Begin the meal with HaMotzi (Baruch Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melech Ha-olam, HaMotzi Lechem Min HaAretz: Blessed are you, Adonai our God, who brings forth bread from the earth).
2. Have a Challah with your Thanksgiving meal.
3. Encourage your guests to each bring two canned food items to collect and deliver to a food bank or shelter the next day.
4. Read Jewish prayers of thanksgiving, like psalms (Hodu Ladonai Ki Tov, Ki Lolam Chasdo: Give thanks to God, for God is good) or another prayer, such as:
“As we gather together on this Thanksgiving Day, surrounded by loved ones and friends, let us pause for a moment to express our gratitude and to commit ourselves to seek to fulfill the best of the potential within us. May we strive, through both deeds and words, for greater love and thankfulness within our families, our communities, our nation and all society. May we never be too busy to pause and say “thanks” to each other and to You for all our blessings. Blessed are You, O God, the source of these gifts and more.”
5. Do a volunteer activity on Thanksgiving Day, either before or after your meal!
6. Fulfill the obligation to feed the hungry, by providing a meal at our local charities.
7. Have a “left-overs” Shabbat meal the day after Thanksgiving!
Wishing you all a wonderful Thanksgiving, Lynda Gutcheon, Interim Director of Education

Students share their traditions with their future grandchildren...Our 4th graders are studying about how traditions are created in a family through life cycle events and holidays. Here’s how they connected their Consecration to tradition.
Dear Future Grandchild, I am writing to you about my Consecration which I hope you will have too. My Consecration was in first grade. It was very exciting. You go up to the bima and say the Shema using hand signs. You will learn that too. Then the teachers will give you a miniature Torah and a big Hershey bar. It is very, very fun. Your loving Nanna.
Dear Future Grandchildren, I’m about to tell you all about Consecration. You will go up in front of the congregation on a Friday night. You will be in first grade. You sing the Shema and another song. You get a tiny, tiny, tiny Torah and a big Hershey bar the size of the tiny Torah. The experience was lovely. I really enjoyed it. Love, Grandpa
