PART 1: INTRODUCTION

VESSEL: M/T VICTORY

LOCATION: Netherlands

DATE: 22nd of July 2017

TIME:

VIBRATION DATA ANALYSER USED: COMMTEST VB5

VIBRATION ANALYSIS SOFTWARE: ASCENT L2

IR CAMERA: FLIR E8

SURVEYOR: …………………………… (Vibration Analyst Cat I)

ANALYST: ……………………………….(Vibration Analyst Cat II)

SUPERVISOR: ………………………… (Vibration Analyst Cat III)

SCOPE:

41 pieces of equipment were surveyed according to customer recommendation.

43 Electrical Panels were surveyed with IR Thermography according to customer

recommendation.

In Part 2, an Exception Report of IR Thermography with findings and recommendations is

presented.

In Part 3, a complete list of all the surveyed machinery in a Vibration Executive Summary Report

is presented.

In Part 4, an Exception Report of Vibrations Analysis with findings and recommendations is

included. Furthermore, measurement tables showing the data collection points and the

corresponding .rms values (in mm/s and g) of all machinery that were rated as satisfactory can

be found. These values can be used as baseline measurements in future surveys.

SURVEY:

The survey was conducted at the port of Amsterdam, Netherlands on the 22nd of July 2017, in

machinery recommended by customer in “as found” condition.

All machinery was under normal working condition.

Based on the vibration analysis of collected data, the operating condition of 2 machinery is rated

unacceptable, 3 machinery is rated marginal and 36 machinery condition is rated satisfactory.

The satisfactory rated machinery vibrations data can be used as baseline for future

measurements or for sister ships.

Based on the IR Thermography of electrical Panels, 1 finding is rated as unacceptable, 2

findings as marginal and at 40 systems no findings were identified.

A quick look report (Doc#: FNT 840.2/01/17/REP/27/07/17) has already been delivered to

NELSON Technical Department on July 27th, 2017.

Data were analyzed and evaluation of machinery condition took place, based on broadband and

narrowband analysis. For the narrowband analysis and evaluation, the following techniques were

utilized:

- Spectrum analysis (unit mm/sec): Faults like misalignment, unbalance, looseness, mounting

issues etc. can be identified.

- Time waveform analysis: Faults like mounting issues, hitting patterns etc. can be identified.

- High frequency spectrum (unit g) and time waveform analysis: Faults like bearing wear, bearing

lubricating issues, turbo generator condition etc. can be identified.

- Demodulation spectrum and waveform analysis: Faults like bearing wear, bearings lubricating

issues, rotating looseness etc. can be identified.

For broadband analysis and evaluation, the following standards were used:

- DNV “Rules for Classification of Ships - Part 6 Chapter 15 January 2011”.

- ISO 8528-9 “Reciprocating Internal Combustion Engine Driven Alternating Current Generating Sets - Part 9 Measurement and Evaluation Of Mechanical Vibrations” - VDI 2063 “Measurement and Evaluation of Mechanical Vibrations of Reciprocating Piston

Engines and Piston Compressors”

- ISO 10816-1 “Mechanical vibration -- Evaluation of machine vibration by measurements on non-

rotating parts -- Part 1: General guidelines”

- ANSI/ASA S2.28-2009 “Guide for the Measurement and Evaluation of Broadband Vibration of

Surface Ship Auxiliary Rotating Machinery”.

Classification of severity based on international standards is defined as follows:

- Unacceptable: Machinery rated unacceptable is normally considered to have a severe

problem. Generally, the machinery should not operate until inspection or remedial action

performed.

- Marginal: Machinery rated as marginal is normally considered unsatisfactory for long-term

continuous operation. Generally, the machinery may be operated for a limited period in this

condition until a suitable opportunity arises for remedial action.

- Satisfactory (*) with observation. Machinery rated satisfactory with observation require

monitoring of operation, but is suitable for long-term continuous operation. Further remedial

actions to be undertaken in case of poor performance evidences or to be scheduled based on

recommendations.

ANNEX 1 – Data Collection Procedure

SCOPE

The scope of this Annex is to explain the steps according to which the Data Collection took place

in order to ensure the proper and standardized procedure.

Sensor Mounting

A 100mV/g transducer was used. Where possible data were collected in three directions,

horizontally, vertically and axially.

a. Axial direction: Should be

parallel to the rotation axis of the rotor (Figures 1-

2).

b. Radial Direction: These are the

Vertical and Horizontal directions and should be

perpendicular to the rotor centerline.

b.1 Vertical direction: Should be

radial to the machine surface opposite to the

machine mounting for foot mounted machinery

(Figure 1). For end mounted machinery, the

vertical direction is perpendicular to the Axial

direction and the sensor should be “facing” the

machine onto which the motor/pump, for which we

collect data, is installed (Figure 2).

c. Horizontal direction: Should be

radial to the machine surface and 90° to the

vertical direction. For vertically mounted machines

the 90° count towards the shaft rotation

movement.

Sensor Locations

Repeatability of the measurements should be ensured. For this purpose, FNT personnel is

instructed and trained to recognize the measuring locations in all kinds of machinery.

The sensor is positioned as close as it can safely be to the bearings. Figures 3.a, 3.b and 3c

present some examples. Positioning sensors on motor covers should be avoided.

Nomenclature

The most common nomenclature used is presented hereafter.

MNDE: Motor non drive end, which is the free end of the motor.

MDE: Motor drive end, which is the end of the motor close to the driven machine (pump, fan, compressor

etc.)

IN BRG: Inboard bearing of the driven machine (pump, fan, compressor etc.).

OUT BRG: outboard bearing of the driven machine (pump, fan, compressor etc.).

PUMP CASING: The casing of the pump.

FAN CASING: The casing of the fan.

FOOT: Compressor’s foot.

FRAME: Compressor’s frame.

HEAD: Compressor’s cylinder head.

Units

The following units are used:

mm/s: used to measure the rms vibration level of the machinery. In general, classification of the machinery

is based on the rms value. Faults like misalignment, unbalance, looseness, mounting issues etc. can be

identified based on the used technique, the pattern and the level of the measurement.

Note:

Unacceptable rating machine require actions as soon as possible. Machines rated unacceptable are normally considered to have a severe problem. Generally, the machine should not operate until inspection or remedy action performed. Marginal rating machine require actions to be schedule. Machines rated marginal are normally considered unsatisfactory for long-term continuous operation. Generally, the machine may be operated for a limited period in this condition until a suitable opportunity arises for remedial action. Broadband (rms vibration energy power) and narrowband (spectrum, time waveform, demodulation and phase) analysis was performed. The following standards was used:

ISO 10816-3 “Mechanical vibration — Evaluation of machine vibration by measurements on non-rotating parts — Part 3: Industrial machines with nominal power above 15 kW and nominal speeds between 120 r/min and 15 000 r/min when measured in situ
