Wire rope springs overview

Description Standard wire rope springs are comprised of steel cable threaded through metal retaining bars that are mounted for effective shock and vibration isolation. Thanks to their construction, Eidos Engineering wire rope springs are environmentally stable, high-performance shock and vibration isolators that are unaffected by temperature extremes, oils and abrasives.

Main characteristics • High deflection compared with overall dimensions

• Natural frequencies lower than 10Hz with high isolation level

• Reduction of structure-born noise

• High damping

• Magnification at resonance lower than 3

• Excellent resistance to environmental agents

• Maintenance free

Materials and finishes • Wire rope

o stainless steel o galvanized

• Mount bars o aluminum o alloy steel, galvanized o stainless steel

• Hardware o alloy steel, zinc plated o stainless steel

• Thread o stainless self-clinching insert o stainless steel helical inserts

Options

Mounting Eidos Engineering offers a full range of mounting combinations of thru-hole, countersunk, and threaded bars. All configurations are in Metric styles. Consult Eidos Engineering for special mounting configuration.

Loops Eidos Engineering’s wire rope springs can be purchased with the full number of loops, or as few as 2-Loops. The number of loops is indicated in the isolator part number. Performance is provided for full loop isolators. Performance for reduced loop isolators can be obtained by a simple ratio.

Performance

Stiffness Wire rope springs exhibit non-linear stiffness behavior. Small deflections, usually associated with vibration isolation, will have a different spring rate than larger shock deflections. Eidos Engineering publishes typical vibration stiffness values within the catalog. These values can be used to predict system performance.

Page 8: Vibration isolators - Wire rope isolators

7

The stiffness values listed in the catalog are for full-loop versions. For reduced loop versions, ratio the stiffness by dividing the number of desired loops by the number of full loops.

8

Damping Typically 10-25%, depending on size and input level. For specific damping considerations, please consult Eidos Engineering.

Mounting Orientation The diagrams below illustrate typical mounting orientations.
