Park to Begin Charging Entrance Fee on May 6 Crater Lake National Park has begun spring opening operations along West Rim Drive. The Crater Lake road crew has cleared snow to the Diamond Lake Overlook, about five miles northwest of Rim Village. The first mile of West Rim Drive, from Rim Village to Discovery Point, is currently open to motorized vehicle traffic. The North Entrance is projected to open to vehicles between Memorial Day and mid-June, dependent on weather. Crater Lake will begin charging an entrance fee beginning Friday, May 6. Entrance fees for a seven-day pass into the park are $15 per car or $10 per person for motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians. As snow is removed from Rim Drive, Crater Lake welcomes hikers and bikers to access cleared roadway segments before they are open to motorized vehicles. “As the park prepares Rim Drive for the summer season, we are glad to offer this opportunity for healthy recreation and peaceful reflection. We hope hikers and bikers will take advantage of this special time when the lake remains wrapped in its winter coat,” said Superintendent Craig Ackerman. Crater Lake will publish regular updates of road opening progress on our website at https://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/spring-opening1.htm and on Facebook and Twitter. At an average elevation of 7,000 feet, both East and West Rim drives receive an average of 50 feet of snow

each winter. The park uses a combination of heavy bulldozers and rotary plows to remove snow, ice, and rockfalls that have accumulated since the road closed last autumn. Annually, the Crater Lake road crew clears 33 miles on Rim Drive, nine miles on North Entrance Road, six miles on Pinnacles Road, and numerous pullouts and parking areas. While spring opening is underway, remember that snow and ice will likely continue into June. Always stay far back from the edge of the caldera. Also, walk or bike in the middle of the road to avoid falling rocks or clumps of snow and ice from unstable snow banks. Although the road is closed to traffic, park vehicles and heavy machinery will be on the road as a part of spring opening. Park concessions facilities are also preparing to open this month. The Lodge opens for the season on May 20, and the Mazama Village Cabins, Annie Creek Gift Shop and Restaurant, and Mazama Camper Store and Fuel Station will open on May 27. The Mazama Campground will open one week later on June 3. The Steel Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m

PORTLAND, Ore. — Warming air temperature is predicted to change water temperature and water column mixing in Oregon’s Crater Lake over the next several decades, potentially impacting the clarity and health of the iconic lake, according to a U.S. Geological Survey report released today. Researchers from the USGS, University of Trento in Italy and Crater Lake National Park analyzed how climate conditions currently affect the fundamental temperature characteristics and water-column mixing processes in Crater Lake, the deepest lake in the U.S. and one of the clearest in the world. “We used a one-dimensional computer driven model that was developed specifically for cold, deep lakes to predict mixing events in Crater Lake under six climate scenarios to the year 2100, using wind, solar radiation and atmospheric temperatures as inputs,” said Tamara Wood, lead USGS scientist on the study. “Each climate scenario estimates a different severity of warming over time.” The USGS modeling showed that warming of the atmosphere caused by climate change could disrupt the deep mixing process in Crater Lake. As the atmosphere warms, deep mixing events will likely become less frequent. Under the least severe warming scenario, deep mixing will occur on average once every three years by 2100. Under the most severe scenario, deep mixing could stop completely. Mixing of the water column to the bottom in some exceptionally deep lakes requires a special combination of extremely cold water in the upper water column in winter and strong wind events that push that layer of cold water to one side of the lake. Given the right conditions, a plume of cold water can sink to the lake bottom. The deep mixing process requires the presence of cold air in winter. If the surface water does not become colder and denser than the deeper water, deep-water mixing will not occur. These deep-water mixing events have two major effects on the Crater Lake ecosystem. As the plumes of cold water sink, deeper water is forced upward, which causes upwelling of nutrients that contribute to the growth of algae and can thus affect water clarity. Likewise, these sinking plumes of water are the critical process that replenishes dissolved oxygen near the lake bottom that is otherwise depleted by the decomposition of algae. Organisms that live in the deeper regions of Crater Lake depend on these mixing events in winter to provide the dissolved oxygen needed for survival. Predicting the effect these changes will have on the ecology of Crater Lake and its famous water clarity will require models that combine the deep-mixing model results with factors that affect algal growth and oxygen use by deep-lake organisms. “Crater Lake is, of course, well-known for its stunningly clear water and blue color,” said Scott Girdner, a lake biologist at Crater Lake National Park and participant in the study. “So changes in climate that may affect water clarity are of particular interest to the Park from a lake-health perspective.” The description and results of the Crater Lake modeling can be accessed in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2016-5046, “Simulation of Deep Ventilation in Crater Lake, Oregon, 1951–2099.”

All week long, raging wildfires have swept across neighborhoods and forests of the city of Fort McMurray in Alberta, Canada, forcing more than 80,000 people to flee. The fire, is estimated to have burned more than 250,000 acres so far, destroying nearly 2,000 buildings, and will likely be one of Canada’s most expensive disasters, with insurance claims estimated to top $9 billion Unseasonably hot weather in Alberta, Canada, is fueling the worst wildfire disaster in the country’s history. An extreme weather pattern, known as an omega block, is the source of the heat. An omega block is essentially a stoppage in the atmosphere’s flow, in which a sprawling area of high pressure forms. This clog impedes the typical west-to-east progress of storms. The jet stream, along which storms track, is forced to flow around the blockage. As the Fort McMurray wildfire rapidly spread Tuesday, temperatures surged to 90 degrees (32 Celsius), shattering the daily record of 82 degrees set May 3, 1945. Dozens of other locations in Alberta also had record high temperatures.

Mandarinfish (Synchiropus splendidus) The mandarinfish is native to the Pacific, ranging approximately from the Ryukyu Islands south to Australia.

A new species of fat-tailed gecko has been discovered by scientists in Australia. The gecko, which was given the name Diplodactylus ameyi, is a specialized termite predator found in outback Queensland and northern New South Wales. Diplodactylus ameyi is described as tan to medium-dark brown with pale spots, which helps it blend in with its surroundings in the dry, arid environments it inhabits. Like many other terrestrial geckos, it shelters in unused spider burrows during the day. One of the more distinctive features of Diplodactylus ameyi, which can grow up to 85 millimetres in length, is its broad, rounded snout, which closely resembles its tail. Photo by Angus Emmott.

Worldwide there are 23 species of vultures. These birds are absolutely critical to a healthy environment. Of these 23 species of vulture, 16 are either endangered or near extinction. This is due to a number of reasons including habitat loss plus both intentional & unintentional poisoning of these amazing birds. Contributing to this is the fact that these monogamous birds are very attentive parents with kids that don't like to leave home. So if something happens to a brood it's a large loss. The relatively prolific Turkey Vulture will lay 1-3 eggs each year which take up to 40 days to hatch with the babies staying in the nest as much as 84 days. Compare that to California Condors who lay just 1 egg which takes 2 months to hatch with baby staying in the nest for 6 months after that. Even after leaving the nest the CA Condor may stay with its parent for 2 years. As a result, California Condors usually only breed every other year. Badger Run Wildlife Rehab With baby wildlife season upon us I want to put out an important reminder. If you find ANY sick, injured, or orphaned wildlife please do not attempt to care for it yourself. Immediately call a wildlife rehabilitator for assistance. Please DO NOT OFFER FOOD OR WATER to the animal. Depending on the animal's condition (shock, dehydration, cold, emaciation) it could actually harm or kill them because they lack the ability to property digest food. Similarly, the wrong type of food can harm them. Even the wrong method of feeding can be lethal. Food or liquid given by untrained caregivers can be aspirated leading to pneumonia or even death (baby birds especially). A rehabilitator will be able to assess the animal & then administer any needed fluids & nutrition safely.

FCE (Family and Community Education)

Meetings are the 2nd Wed of each month at 9:30. Meetings are open to all. We have a pot luck each month along with the lessons presented by a member. For the location and directions to the next meeting, please call Sandie Bolyard at 541-892-2336. Locally, FCE raises money for college scholarships for our Chiloquin High School Seniors. Money is raised through fund-raising projects such as a Thanksgiving turkey dinner fixings raffle with tickets being sold at Kirchers Hardware; Christmas Boutique at the Chiloquin Community Center; Kaleidoscope of Learning at Mazama High School in Klamath Falls. We are very active in our community and you will find FCE volunteers at many local events. Oregon FCE is a non-profit organization of volunteers who have worked on such issues as improving sanitary requirements in hospitals, women’s labor laws, requirements for high school teachers, and funding for the state library. Nationally, we began the school hot lunch program and pushed for bookmobile libraries. FCE asked for and got money from the legislature to fund an OSU research study on the dental caries problem in Oregon. We’ve studied our county governments and monitored their activities; worked on county and state fair boards to improve their quality; sponsored programs on rural road safety, farm safety, home safety, bike safety, Defensive Driving courses, campaigns to get the drunk drivers off the road, and child seatbelt laws. Current educational programs focus on the environment, children and television, literacy, and global issues. Current concerns include addressing the growing need for food banks, for shelters for the homeless, and for reducing the violence against women and children. Oregon FCE members donate thousands of volunteer hours and dollars to these causes.

Chiloquin Branch Library - The library has many ways to get involved and many fun ways to contribute to your local community. Some opportunities: 1. Evening volunteer: The library is open until 6pm on Tuesdays, Weds and Thursdays. We would really appreciate a volunteer who could help us out with closing tasks for the last hour or so on these days (especially Tuesdays). 2. Story time: If you would like to read two or three stories to a small group or preschoolers, and lead them in a simple craft or activity, the library staff can use your help. 3. Summer Reading Program: There are many opportunities during the summer to help out with this very worthwhile program. 4. Honor collections: These are racks of paperback books, magazines and audiovisual materials that patrons may check out without a library card. By offering these collections, more people in the community can be reached and a greater diversity of materials can be made available without incurring the costs of cataloging and processing items for the general collections. The staff would like to have some help in keeping these racks orderly, attractive and relevant. Check with the librarian for information on how to “adopt a rack”. 5. Help with sorting donations. 6. Go through Books for Sale section and tidy it once a month or so. Stop in at the library and see what they need or give them a call at 541-783-3315.

Chiloquin Visions in Progress (CVIP) CVIP operates the Chiloquin Community Center, the Chiloquin Learns After School program, the Writer in Residence Program, and is the contact point for the Chiloquin Area Community Resource Committees and their projects. We have a volunteer list in the office where you can sign up to be available for many different “jobs” and projects. Call 783-7780 between 10 AM and 2 PM weekdays for further information. If you would like to get further involved, attend a Board meeting, held on the 3rd Wed of the month at 6PM in the Community Center conference room.
