A Message from Fr. Matt ...Dear Brothers and Sisters,Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost. Pentecost is a Greek word that means 50. This feast is always celebrated 50 days after Easter. In this feast, we celebrate the sending of the person of the Holy Spirit upon the Church. But what was the Church on the day the Holy Spirit came upon it? It was a group of scared people, hiding in an upper room behind a locked door. The Apostles and the Blessed Mother, unsure what to do. Often this Feast is called the Birthday of the Church because with the coming of the Holy Spirit, the Church became what it was meant to be. The Church was born. The Church was sent!

Sent. Sent out. To others. For others. To bring others to Jesus. To bring hope to people. To bring people love. To bring people to The One who saves. To bring them the Good News that nothing is irretrievably lost. Jesus sends His Church into the world to do this, but not alone. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit to give us the strength, courage, guidance, and hope to be just this for the world. The Holy Spirit can set your heart on fire like it did the early Church. In an instant, they went from a scared suppressed group, to a group that was full of courage and confidence. From hiding to proclaiming the Good News to anyone who would listen. Man if only we had the Holy Spirit with us like they did. If only we had the same level of Holy Spirit in our tanks, just imagine what we could do! Right?Well, here’s the thing....we have it! We, who have been baptized and con-firmed, are filled with the same amount of the Holy Spirit as was St. Peter when he led 3,000 people to follow Jesus that First Birthday of the Church! We have all that Peter had. Peter had no building, no rituals, just the Holy Spirit and faith in the love of Jesus. We have what Peter had and what Peter had was enough. Each day this week, pray to the Holy Spirit. Ask the Holy Spirit to set your heart on fire. Pray that you may know the power that is inside you. And each day remember that you are sent. You are not here for yourself. Let yourself be sent. Look for opportunities to go and love whomever you see that day. Don’t worry about them loving you back. Remember what you have and, like at that first Pentecost, what you have is enough. Peace and Love,Fr. Matt

Highlights from Bishop Zubik’sReopening Plan

In all phases of reopening, the Diocese of Pittsburgh will remain in alignment with local, state, and federal public health and safety guidelines. Parishioners will be required to wear masks, use hand sanitizer, and maintain social distancing of six feet (side-to-side, as well as front and back). Although beginning June 1, churches are permitted to open for daily Mass, it should not be expected that all churches in the Diocese of Pittsburgh will do so. The decision to reopen a church rests with pastors, who need to base their decisions on a number of factors including their ability to comply with CDC cleaning and sanitizing protocols. Return-ing to churches will be a very different experience, and to support parishioners in understanding what to expect, the dio-cese has a new Moving Forward Together area on its website geared toward helping parishioners with what to expect as they return to worship together in church. Those resources are available at: https://diopitt.org/moving-forward-together.

Thank you for your generosity to Parish Ministries!

“We encourage all citizens, particularly Catholics, to embrace their citizenship not merely as a duty and privilege, but as an opportunity meaningfully to par-ticipate in building the culture of life. Every act of responsible citizenship is an

exercise of significant individual power. We must exercise that power in ways that defend human life, especially those of God’s children who are unborn, dis-abled or otherwise vulnerable. We get the public officials we deserve. Their virtue, or lack thereof, is a judgment not only on them, but on us. Because of this we urge our fellow citizens to see beyond party politics, to analyze campaign rhetoric critically and to choose their political leaders according to principle, not party affiliation or mere self-interest.”Living the Gospel of Life: A Challenge to American Catholics 34, Conference of Catholic Bishops, November 1998

Catholic Identity ProgramThis program highlights a variety of virtues and values

through short lessons, prayers, Scripture references, and more.

This week’s St. Wendelin School Student of the Week is: SOPHIE MITCH

Sophie has gone to St. Wendelin School since Kindergarten. Her favorite color

is black. She loves Math class, and she is

excited to learn to spell more words. At home,

she likes to read. Her favorite food is pizza, and she enjoys

eating out at McDonald’s. Sophie is a sweet girl

with a great personality. Sophie plans to become a chef

when she grows up! Congratulations to

this week’s St. Wendelin School

Student of the Week, SOPHIE MITCH!

This Week’s Virtue is: ForgivenessForgiveness is

God’s gift that frees us from our mistakes

and regrets, and enables us to offer mercy and

pardon to others.

On a December morning in 1983 Pope John Paul II sat in a jail cell with the assassin who nearly took his life. He held the hand of Mehmet Ali Agca and forgave him. The encounter was a stunning example of the power of forgiveness to heal the wounds of the heart and soul. The root word, “forgive,” means “to let go, to give back, to cease to harbor.” When we let go, we discover a way to find rest and respite from our judgments and hurts. As recipeints of forgiveness, we cease to harbor regret, and open ourselves more fully to God’s gracious love. It must have been no easy task to sit face-to-face with the man who wanted to take his life, but Pope John Paul understood the more dire option of refusing to forgive. As he said, “Forgiveness is first of all a personal choice, a decision of your heart to go against the natural instinct to get revenge, to pay back evil with evil.”

Grouping Information

Thank you to Youth Group members who spent a morning weeding, planting, and

mulching outside the St. Wendelin Parish Office. They - and many others -

have the place lookin’ good! Thanks also to Parishioner Mark Pflugh who repaired

the broken statue of St. Michael the Archangel. Believe it or not,

the high winds of Good Friday lifted St. Michael off his stand and he crashed

causing several parts to break. Mark performed wing and sword surgery, and cleaned the statue, and once again,

St. Michael can defend us in battle!
