Philanthropy Overview

Interlochen is governed by a 30-member Board comprised of leaders from around the world with a shared

commitment to Interlochen and the arts. Interlochen raises more than $4.2 million annually, with an

additional $4 million raised for facility, special projects and endowment support in FY18. $8.1 million was

committed in documented planned gifts in FY18. The

budget and financial outlook of the institution is

strong, with an endowment of approximately $88

million, and the operating budget for the 2018–2019

year was approximately $44 million.

In the last eight years, Interlochen has experienced

unprecedented growth in program offerings, capital

investments and financial stability. Its current net

assets of $184 million with an endowment valued at

$88 million represent the strongest financial portfolio

in the institution’s history.

In spite of its extraordinary success, the Vice President of Philanthropy will need to work with the entire

Interlochen community to tackle some of the current challenges related to philanthropy. Its 110,000 alumni

are spread across the globe, and increasing alumni and alumni family participation is a high priority for

Interlochen. Expanded institutional capacity and systems will need to be developed in order to engage with

high-potential prospects identified over recent years. Additionally, like nearly every nonprofit, Interlochen

hopes to increase fundraising participation from its younger alumni and friends.

Interlochen Center for the Arts announced the completion of its CREATE AMAZING: The Campaign for

Interlochen comprehensive fundraising campaign as of October 31, 2018 and will officially celebrate its

success during a campus-wide event in May 2019. The Campaign has laid the groundwork for Interlochen's

centennial in 2028 and addressed many long-standing faculty needs. Future efforts will focus on expanding

investments in the student experience and a commitment toward increasing financial aid. In addition,

Interlochen aims to strengthen the value it brings to its Northern Michigan community and beyond through

educational outreach and community programming on Interlochen Public Radio.

in July 2012 with a $100 million goal, which rose to $125

million and reached over $134 million: $36.6 million for

campus improvements (e.g., the new Music Building, the

Dennison Center for Recreation and Wellness and the soon

to begin expansion and renovation of dance facilities); $29.1

million in annual operating support for the Interlochen

Annual Fund and Interlochen Public Radio; $11.2 million

toward endowment, including over 30 new endowed

scholarships; and $57.4 million in planned gifts, including to

unrestricted operating support and endowed scholarships. More than 18,000 donors from 54 countries, 49

states and Washington, D.C., made gifts through the Campaign.

The Vice President of Philanthropy will direct the next comprehensive campaign to support capital,

scholarship and program endowments, substantially increasing the endowment, and will mark the

institution’s centennial milestone.

Overview – Interlochen Center for the Arts

Interlochen inspires discovery — of ourselves, those around us, our communities and the world — through

deeply meaningful experiences in the arts. The potential for personal, artistic and societal transformation

exists here in greater measure than anywhere else.

The scope and programs of Interlochen are far-reaching,

encompassing Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Academy

(arts boarding high school), Interlochen Public Radio network (IPR),

Interlochen College of Creative Arts (continuing education programs)

and Interlochen Presents, a year-long performing arts series.

Interlochen has been a champion for arts education, public

broadcasting and live performances for nine decades. Interlochen

alumni are distinguished the world over as leaders, performers,

advocates and teachers in the arts and beyond.

History:

In the mid-1920s, few schools had music programs. Founder Joseph E. Maddy established the National

High School Orchestra Camp in 1927, capitalizing on the growth of the American music education

movement, of which Maddy was an early leader. The following summer, 115 students from across the

country arrived by train, bus and car to an improbable location in Northwest Michigan. Thousands of area

residents packed the new Interlochen Bowl to witness a phenomenon that was entirely new to the country

— high school musicians playing like professionals. The rest is history: with each successive year, even

INTERLOCHEN CENTER FOR THE ARTS PROSPECTUS | 6

during the financial struggles of the Great Depression, Interlochen grew in size, scope, stature and

reputation. Financial support from famous musicians, private donors, instrument makers and music

publishers helped the young camp survive. Through the next several decades, the Camp raised its national

profile through a commitment to unquestioned quality and experience, attracting world renowned performers

and teachers, marketing the Camp by sharing an amazing story across the country in national broadcasts

and performances in the most famous concert halls and venues, including the CBS and NBC radio networks

and the 1939 World’s Fair.

The growth of Interlochen as an arts education leader, public broadcaster and fine arts presenter was all

part of an early vision of the founder, an entrepreneur, marketer and promoter who shaped the spirit and

values of Interlochen by daring to do the impossible. The major programs of Interlochen are the result of the

spirit that Joseph Maddy brought to Michigan and the world.

Interlochen Arts Camp:

Each summer, more than 2,500 artists grades three through

12 come to Interlochen Arts Camp, the world’s premier

summer arts program, to study music, theatre, visual arts,

creative writing, motion picture arts and dance. Inspired by

Interlochen’s scenic campus, the world’s best and brightest

students learn from amazing artists and educators

and create with other students who share a passion for the

arts. Programs range in length from one to six weeks, and

participants are divided into three groups based on age.

Interlochen Arts Academy:

When the Interlochen Arts Academy opened its doors in 1962, the idea of a high school with an arts focus

was considered revolutionary. Today, the Academy is not only the first of its kind but considered the world’s

foremost fine arts high school. Combining rich experiences in the arts with challenging and comprehensive

college-preparatory academics, Interlochen Arts Academy boarding high school prepares the world’s most

talented young artists from around the world for rewarding careers and lives. Major areas of study

include music, theatre, comparative arts, creative writing, motion picture arts, dance and visual arts.

Upon graduation, students continue to universities or conservatories or professional schools for further

study in the arts or academics, including Julliard, Eastman, Cleveland Institute of Music, School of the Art

Institute of Chicago, Pratt, RISD, MICA, Curtis, New England Conservatory, Oberlin, Carnegie Mellon and

NYU, Brown, Harvard, Yale, Michigan, USC, Indiana, American Ballet Theatre, Joffrey, Manhattan School

of Music, Boston Conservatory, Peabody and CalArts.

Over the years, the school and its students have compiled a record of success in arts and academics, with

more Presidential Scholars than any other school in the nation, public or private. Academy alumni can be

found in leadership positions in the arts and other professional fields.

Interlochen Public Radio:

While regular radio broadcasts have been a part of Interlochen since 1928, it was not until 1963 that

Interlochen launched its first station, WIAA, an FM public radio station that broadcast eight hours a day. In

1971, Interlochen joined forces with 37 radio stations across the country to create National Public Radio.

A listener-supported broadcast service of Interlochen Center for the Arts, Interlochen Public Radio (IPR)

today is home to two distinct radio stations serving northwest lower Michigan with music, news and culture

from the region and the world – every day, 24 hours a day:

● CLASSICAL MUSIC

88.7 FM, Interlochen; 94.7 FM Traverse City; 88.5 FM, Mackinaw City; 100.9 FM, East

Jordan/Charlevoix:

Classical IPR presents quality classical music with news updates from National Public Radio and

local reports and also broadcasts outstanding musical performances from Interlochen and around

the world. Classical IPR can be heard in more than 20 counties, from well above the Mackinac

Bridge south to Big Rapids and from Michigan’s west coast to Roscommon.

● NEWS

91.5 FM, Traverse City; 89.7 FM, Manistee/Ludington; 90.1 FM, Harbor Springs/Petoskey:

IPR News Radio offers continuous local, national and world news and information. In addition, the

station’s staff of four reporters highlights important issues and events from our region. IPR News

Radio can be heard in Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Lake,

Leelanau, Manistee, Mason and Wexford counties.

IPR is affiliated with National Public Radio, Public Radio International, Michigan Public Radio, Michigan

Association of Public Broadcasters, the National Association of Broadcasters and the Associated Press.

Despite being one of NPR’s smallest members, IPR boasts one of the highest rates of per capita

contributions of any public radio network in the United States. IPR was named Michigan’s top public radio

station three years running.

Interlochen Arts Festival/Interlochen Presents:

Audiences have packed the Interlochen campus since 1928. The program grew significantly in 1964, when

the Philadelphia Orchestra came to Interlochen to perform a summer series for several seasons. Today,

Interlochen Presents stages 600 student and professional performances in two distinct seasons. Concerts,

recitals, plays, art exhibits, readings, film screenings and dance productions by students, faculty, staff and

guest artists make Interlochen the largest regional presenter in Michigan. Guest artists have included Willie

Nelson, Osmo Vanska, Jorja Fleezanis, Pilobolus, Martha Graham Company, Andrea Gibson, ETHEL, Time

for Three, Joshua Bell, Bonnie Raitt, Norah Jones, Josh Groban, Reba McEntire and Bela Fleck.

INTERLOCHEN CENTER FOR THE ARTS PROSPECTUS | 8

Interlochen College of Creative Arts:

Interlochen College of Creative Arts provides a lifetime of enrichment, creativity and professional growth for

adults, through workshops and classes in a variety of arts disciplines. Founded in 2004, the College offers

non-degree arts programs that, for the most part, are three to seven days long and are housed at the

Mallory-Towsley Center for Arts Leadership.

Location

Interlochen, MI, and the Grand Traverse Region:

Interlochen is located in one of the most beautiful

natural environments in the Midwest, nestled in

1,200 wooded acres between two large glacial

lakes, just a few miles from the beaches of Lake

Michigan. The campus’s 400 buildings are a blend

of rustic historic buildings and state-of-the-art

teaching facilities. The pristine surroundings create

an atmosphere for artist and lovers of the arts that

rival other natural settings for arts centers in the

nation — Aspen, Tanglewood and Wolf Trap.

The region is drawing an increasing cadre of

retirees and professionals from across the United States. The area has become a small micro-climate built

around new areas of growth — high-end tourism, food, organic agriculture, viticulture and the arts. The

business community is successfully aligning to attract companies and professionals that create and export

value to the world, including:

● A newly established entrepreneurial incubator, 20fathoms;

● Boomerang Catapult, LLC, a local venture investment company, and

● TCNewTech, a technology organization featuring monthly meetups at the City Opera House.

While Interlochen is the largest arts organization in the region and one of the largest in the state of

Michigan, The Traverse City Film Festival and The National Writers Series both bring international

luminaries in the arts to the region.

Interlochen is located just 15 miles away from Traverse City, which Outside Magazine has named as one of

the top 10 places to live in the United States. The reasons are many: a spectacular natural environment,

neighborly communities that are among the safest in the nation, housing costs that are lower than most

metropolitan areas and miles of Lake Michigan shorelines and dunes with a spectacular scenic peninsula

that is home to dozens of wineries and small producers. The Grand Traverse region is fortunate to have

INTERLOCHEN CENTER FOR THE ARTS PROSPECTUS | 9

excellent air transportation through the nearby regional airport. Interlochen is a four-hour drive from Detroit

and a five-hour drive from Chicago.

Visitors can discover Downtown Traverse City, the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Crystal

Mountain Resort, several picturesque villages and miles of scenic Lake Michigan coastline – all within easy

reach of Interlochen Center for the Arts’ campus. The region has received numerous accolades and

recognition from national travel and food writers:

● One of “The Most Beautiful Towns in America,” Conde Nast Traveler

● One of America's top five foodie towns, Bon Appetit magazine

● America's favorite towns, Travel + Leisure

● Sleeping Bear Dunes named “most beautiful place in America” by Good Morning America

● 10 best summer trips, National Geographic

● Top 7 Beer Destinations, The Travel Channel

● Bicycling magazine's “Six Best Cities for a Bike Vacation”

● “Top 10 Places to Enjoy Local Wines,” USA Today

Leadership: Trey Devey

President, Interlochen Center for the Arts

June 12, 2017, marked Trey Devey’s first day as the eighth president of

Interlochen Center for the Arts. Devey is charged with the responsibility of

advancing the institution as a global leader in arts education and a high impact,

financially sustainable nonprofit, which includes Interlochen Arts Academy,

Interlochen Arts Camp, Interlochen College of Creative Arts, Interlochen

Presents and Interlochen Public Radio.

Prior to joining Interlochen, Devey served as president of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (CSO),

Cincinnati Pops Orchestra and Cincinnati May Festival from 2009 to 2017, where he led the organization

through a financial turnaround while supporting innovative artistic projects, expanded community

engagement initiatives and growth in educational programming.

Under Devey’s leadership, the CSO maintained its place as one of only 15 52-week American orchestras

and achieved nine consecutive fiscal years with balanced budget operations. The annual operating budget

was $61 million when Devey concluded his tenure. During his tenure, concert attendance increased

significantly and over $225 million was raised for special projects, capital needs, bridge funding, debt

elimination and endowment in addition to substantial growth in annual fund support and planned giving

commitments.

Upon his arrival at Interlochen, Devey embarked on a listening tour, meeting with alumni, families, donors,

listeners and strategic partners around the world. This feedback formed the basis for a 10-year strategic

plan and institutional priorities that were adopted by the Board of Trustees at its July 2018 meeting. Work is

already underway on this plan, including investments in program strength through enhanced touring, visiting

artists and other special initiatives, and new partnerships and programs to make an Interlochen education

more accessible. Devey has been building a team of leading professionals in the arts and education sphere

to realize the institution’s vision.

Devey is a former consultant with The Boston Consulting Group and past president of the Syracuse

Symphony Orchestra, Alabama Symphony Orchestra and Florida Philharmonic.

Devey holds an MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, where he achieved the highest

honor as a Palmer Scholar, graduating in the top 5% of his class. He graduated summa cum laude from

Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Music and was given the Outstanding Alumni Award in 2003.
