WORKING COPY Thursday, 30 October 2008 VICTOR FAMILY in SOUTH AFRICA PROLOGUE My interest in the Family Victor arises from research I conducted into the life of one Peter Stuart, former Chief Military Constable of Mafeking. In February 1905, he married Sr. Ella Sophia Victor in the hospital chapel of New Somerset Hospital, Greenpoint, Cape Town. At that time, Sr. Ella Sophia Victor was one of 11 ward sisters and 39 nurses employed by New Somerset Hospital and working under the famous Matron J C Child (1903-1907). After three years training, aged 30 years, she was appointed a Staff Nurse in Bailey Ward in December 1900. She had passed the Colonial Medical Council Examination on 20 December 1900, receiving her certification on 4 January 1901. Ella Sophia Victor, of Pearston, Eastern Cape, was born 6 February 1868 and died 18 January 1948 MOOC 1479/48 . On 6 February 1905, she married Peter Stuart born 1868 Kirkmichael, Bonffshire, Scotland, the son of Alexander Stuart and Jane Mc Pherson. He died 2 May 1938. They had two children; Victor Stuart and Violet Stuart. The New Somerset Hospital Nursing Register, kept by Matron Child confirms that Ella Victor hailed from Pearston, Somerset East, and gives her address as C Kotzé (Christoffel Andries Petrus Kotzé), Pearston. FAMILY TREE of the VICTOR FAMILY

Family Name : meaning literally “winner”, what was formerly a first name became a family name

1. Gerrit Victor b. Amsterdam, a sick-visitor m 16.1.1667 Christina (“ Styntje”) VAN DEN BERG.

Gerrit Victor was born in Amsterdam, and was in the service of the V.O.C. in Ceylon, where his two children were conceived. In 1666, he arrived in the Cape of Good Hope as a sick-visitor. He was appointed a schoolmaster and conducted classes in an attic, thought to have been in the castle. He received pay of a quarter rix-dollar monthly for educating a child of a citizen or servant of the company. When ships called at port, the attic was converted to an inn and the children sent on vacation. Later he was accepted as a burgher; in 1677 headed the orphan chamber; in 1680 was registrar of marriages; he was standard-bearer of the citizens’ guard and between 1678 and 1680 was deacon of the Cape church. In 1676, his wife got permission to establish a bakery and shortly thereafter he won a licence to establish a wine house. In 1681, he again went into the service of the V.O.C. and, as a result, was sent as a sick-visitor to Batavia. He returned the following year and resumed his trade in wine. By 1692, he was a well-to-do farmer capable of harvesting 100 bags of grain each season. 1.1 Cornelis Victor b. Ceylon ~ 26. 10. 1667 m. 8.8.1688 Cornelia Jacoba JUNIUS [sic : see note below] (b. However, the information in the document 1709 7/1/1.96 is quite explicit as to the detail. 1.1.3 Agatha Victor ~ 25.12.1693 1.1.4 Gerrit Victor bc. 1695 m. 15.6.1721 Susanna BOCKELENBERG 1.1.4.1 Johannes Michiel Victor ~ 26. 4. 1722 1.1.4.2 Jacobus Adriaan Victor ~ 19. 9.1723 dc. 1766 m. 23.12.1759 Susanna / Sara Maria KOEKEMOER (dc. 1812) Following the death of Jacobus Adriaan Victor , Sara Maria KOEKEMOER married Theunis Gerrits VAN AART [sister Catharina v Aart, brother Christiaan van Aart].
