Guidance Guidance
Dear Andrew High School Community,
The consistent pattern of March and April will change this year and will be an adjustment forstudents and staff at Andrew High School. It will be felt by all with the move of Spring Break fromMarch, which will became a “longer” month, to April, which will be a “shorter” month. Otherchanges on the horizon have forced us to think differently about April.
The changes in Illinois regarding state testing have altered our calendar. The Prairie StateAchievement Exam is gone. The ACT test, which was previously administered in April, alreadytook place on March 3rd. Many of our juniors are looking to the April National ACT test on April18th at VJA as another opportunity to prove to colleges their preparedness. The new testingstructure, the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC), has startedfor our high schoolers. After several modifications made by the State of Illinois School Board, thePARCC test will be given to freshman in Mathematics and Language Arts. Due to complicationswith the online assessment, students will revert back to the old fashion paper-pencil format. Thefirst round occurred already in mid-March, but April brings a final round for the PARCC examstarting on April 27th. At this point, we are still not sure what information from the results will beprovided to parents, or to us as a school, but we will continue to inform you as we are madeaware.
April is a month full of important activity. With spring sports finally getting outdoors and trulybeginning to compete, we are eager to enjoy this competitive season. Our lower level programslook very promising and we are excited for the outcome of our varsity teams as they compete forconference championships. Spring brings forth Andrew teams to try to defend conference titlesand push their way far into the state tournament series. Many of our competitive academicprograms are also gearing toward the end of their seasons. Programs like Scholastic Bowl,Mathletes, WYSE, and Group Interpretation have grown in both popularity and competitivenessover the past five years. We wish them luck as their respective seasons come to a close.
Our spring musical is a highly anticipated annual event for our theater program. This year’sproduction, “Beauty and the Beast”, is a Disney classic that will certainly pack the house. We havea talented group of seniors who are aiming to showcase their astounding talents with their finalperformance. Break a leg to the cast and crew as they perform this audience favorite - openingnight is April 30th at 7pm. Additional performances will be on May 1st at 7:00pm and Saturday,May 2nd at 3pm.
In addition to being very active in academics and activities, our seniors are also partaking inphilanthropic events in April. They host the senior class blood drive that aims to donate over 70pints of blood to assist others. They are also in the midst of planning and preparing for Prom onApril 24th at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. Our ongoing relationship with the Shedd has allowedour students to enjoy the interactiveness and beauty of the venue on that special night. This year’stheme is “Enchanted” which will undoubtedly be a long standing memorable evening for ourstudents.
As always, please contact me with any thoughts, suggestions or questions at [email protected].

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL From the Nurse’s OfficeAttention Parents/Guardians of the class of
2016 (Juniors)
Beginning with the school year
2015-2016, any child entering 12th
grade in the State of Illinois shall
show proof of having received one
dose of Meningococcal conjugate
vaccine on or after their 16th birth-
day. If you child received a dose
of Meningococcal conjugate vac-
cine before their 16th birthday,
he/she will need a second dose. A
letter with this information has
been mailed to all Class of 2016
students.
The following action is needed
from you at this time:
● If a dose of Meningococcal
vaccine was given on or after
your child’s 16th birthday, take
the letter to your doctor and
ask that they verify that your
child has received the
Meningococcal vaccine and
the date it was given. The bot-
tom section of the letter must
be filled out by your health
care provider to verify the date.
● If your child did not receive the
required Meningococcal vac-
cine on or after their 16th birth-
day, he/she will be required to
have the immunization prior to
the start of school in August
2015.
Proof of having received the
Meningococcal vaccine is
required and should be submitted
to the School Nurse as soon as
the vaccine is given and prior to
June 1, 2015. It is important to
note that your child will not be
able to receive a schedule, begin
the school year on the first day of
class, or participate in Athletics
until proof of having this vaccine
is received in the Nurse’s Office.

feel free to contact the Nurse’s
Office at (708) 342-5858.

Guidance Guidance
Spring has yet to arrive but Thunder Nation is
hard at work. Our teams are hungry to play
and anxious to get and stay outside.
However, in the meantime, excitement is
brewing for what is sure to be an outstanding
spring for our teams, fans, and community!
The spring sport season is underway and
teams are eager to compete! The
enthusiasm for all teams is always very high
as the season begins. Many challenges will
be faced throughout the season as factors
like injuries, slumps, weather, and hot streaks
all enter into the picture, but our
determination and work will shine through!
Only one team can claim the IHSA state
championship at the end, but every team can
claim that they played like a champion no
matter the outcome. Here is hoping that
softball, baseball, boys’ and girls’ track,
badminton, boys’ and girls’ water polo, boys’
gymnastics, girls’ soccer, boys’ volleyball, and
boys’ tennis all play like champions and show
THUNDER PRIDE.
As March meshes into April and then quickly
advances into May, we look toward the end of
the 2014-15 sports’ seasons and look forward
toward 2015-2016.
Next year will be the 2nd year of the 2-year
cycle of conference contests for all of our 29
sports that the SWSC competes in. The
order is the same but the sites switch. The
divisions are based solely on enrollment with
the top half of the conference placed into the
BLUE division and the lowest half by
enrollment placed into the RED division by
sport. Because of our enrollment, we are in
the RED division for all sports where there
were two divisions (gymnastics is combined
for both boys and girls). This remains the
same for the 2015-16 season and then re-
evaluated for the next 2-year cycle. We now
know that all 16 teams will remain a member
of our conference finishing next season.
Not all schools have all of the 29 sports that
are offered. For 12 of these 29 sports, all
16 schools will field teams. In these sports
(Football, G. Volleyball, B/G Cross Country,
B/G Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball,
B/G Track and Cheerleading) the divisions
are:
You can always follow the results for any
conference games on the conference
website, www.athletics2000.com/swsc. Make
sure this spring you also visit our website

updates, results and announcements.
As we move toward the end of the school
year, we look forward to the summer
sports’ camps that will be offered at Andrew

DEANS’ Office:Parking Lot Review
As a way to continue to examine ways to create a
safe environment for our students, staff, and parents
at Andrew High School, we have recently connected
with the Tinley Park Police Department (TPPD) to
review our pick-up and drop-off procedures in our
parking lot.
This review has already developed an in-depth
study of the function of our parking lot done by the
Tinley Park Police Department. Additionally, the
TPPD has created a preliminary list of suggestions
on improvements to our parking lot that can make
the lot function more safely. School officials have
had an initial meeting with the TPPD to discuss
these suggestions and brainstorm other ideas.
The next step in the review will be a “car count” in
the spring by the Tinley Park Police Department.
This “car count” will give great insight into the num-
ber of cars that enter our lot and what areas of the
lot see most congestion. This information, along
with previous discussions, will help guide potential
changes to the pick-up and drop-off procedures in
our parking lot with the ultimate goal of having a
safe area for our students.
Once decisions have been made, the Tinley Park
Police Department and Andrew High School will
actively communicate this information to all students
and parents. In the meantime, please continue to
use safe driving practices while in our parking lot,
including driving slowly and watching for pedestri-
ans. Also, please be conscientious and respectful to
other drivers in the lot.

National Honor Society Prepares for Year’s End
In February, Andrew’s National Honor Society was heavily involved in
preparations for the remaining months of the school year. Junior mem-
bers interested in running for office began campaigns. The National
Honor Society also began its World’s Finest Chocolates fundraiser.
Proceeds go towards important events like the annual Induction
Ceremony and charity events. NHS members also acted as ushers to
parents supporting their students at Senior Recognition Night. The
group provided and served cake for the celebration afterwards.

they are certified to use Alldata. This is an automotive service

Co-Curricular Updates
Seniors Haley Dendler and Malik
Abdeljaber get some last minute
practice in for Pre-Calculus.
As we approach the end of the
semester, we ask parents to remind
their seniors that in order to partici-
pate in graduation, all credits and
community service must be complet-
ed. Students who have not complet-
ed these requirements are not eligi-
ble to participate in the graduation
ceremony. College-bound seniors
are reminded that their prospective
schools reserve the right to rescind
their admissions offer if classes are
dropped or grades decline. The best
preparation for college includes con-
sistent study habits and a challenging
curriculum.
Senior Requirements
During the week of April 20th, coun-
selors will meet individually with their
juniors to discuss planning for after
high school. Please ask your junior
to share this information with you
after their meeting, and be sure to
reach out to their guidance counselor
with any questions.
Junior Counselor Meetings
Registration deadlines are approach-
ing for the May and June A.C.T. and
S.A.T. exam.
College-bound juniors may wish to
consider taking one or both of these
tests depending on their future plans.
A.C.T/S.A.T. For Juniors
Juniors who plan to apply to highly
selective schools, or schools on the
east or west coast, will probably
need to take an S.A.T., as well as
additional S.A.T. subject tests. If you
have questions or need additional
information, please contact the
Guidance Office or the college that is
under consideration.
By the time they return from summer
vacation, current juniors should have
decided on the colleges to which
they will apply. In order to do that,
they, along with their parents, should
be visiting prospective colleges this
spring and over the summer. There’s
nothing like a campus visit to get a
real picture of college life.
Do I Need To Take the S.A.T.?
College Deadlines for Juniors
Registration continues for second
semester summer school courses in
District 230. Most of the courses will
be offered at Carl Sandburg this
year. There are also a few enrich-
ment courses available at Andrew.
For further information, please con-
tact your Guidance Counselor.
Summer School bus transportation is
also available for a fee.
Summer School
Each year parents of good students
receive information in the mail, or via
e-mail, about honorary academic
societies and financial aid companies
that promise recognition and money
for their children—once a fee is paid.
We always caution parents regarding
organizations that require fees.
These programs are often money-
makers for the organization that is
being promoted. The Illinois Student
Assistance Commission and the
Illinois Association of College
Admissions Counselors recommends
“Fast Web” at www.fastweb.com
as a great source of information.
Thousands of scholarships are
available on this site, ready to be
matched to your child’s qualifications.
Financial Aid Scams
The Future of Financial AidWhile the federal government has freed up more loan
money for college students, it can become a burden on
students after they finish college. This points out the
importance of research when it comes to the topic of
financial aid and college planning. Some families get
caught up in the “name game” when selecting a college
instead of recognizing the value of minimizing student
undergraduate debt, especially for those students going
on to graduate school. Most colleges can give you infor-
mation on the average student debt that their students
have accumulated at the end of their college career.
Most can also give you information on how many stu-
dents graduate in four years. The answers to these
questions, along with a clear idea of a student’s career
path, can help minimize college debt. Most eighteen
year olds do not understand this topic as well as their
parents. Guidance counselors are happy to help in the
mediation of these discussions and to provide informa-
tion on financial aid.
Scholarships AwardedIf you have been awarded a scholarship, please let
Mrs. Driscoll know by emailing her at
Include the following information:
1. Name of University or organization awarding the
scholarship
2. Title/name of the award or scholarship
3. Amount of the award for each year over 4 years (if
applicable)
The amount of the awards will be kept confidential. The

required to share the financial information if you do not
wish to do so.

the rewards and challenges that high school can bring through the
eyes of seniors.
Scholastic Bowl
The Andrew Scholastic Bowl moved into March building on successes
of a great season. The varsity team won first place in the Red Division
of the SWSC with a record of 11-4. During the SWSC combined con-
ference tournament, both the varsity and junior varsity teams placed
fourth, with the junior varsity team knocking off the first place Lockport
team. Ryan Witry was named to the all-sectional team by the Illinois
High School Scholastic Bowl Coaches Association. Stay tuned for
results of the regional tournament in next month’s Parent Newsletter.

Auto Club
Auto Club has been very
active the last few
months. In addition to
working on cars, members
also enjoyed visiting the
Auto Show at McCormick
Place on February 17th.
Special thanks to Apple
Chevy in Orland Park for
donating the tickets so
that the Auto Club could
attend the show.
Our Auto 3 class is now Automotive Information certified by Alldata.
These students each received a certificate and a patch that states
they are certified to use Alldata. This is an automotive service
information software that is used by technicians in the automotive
industry for repairs, adjustments and specifications.
Co-Curricular Updates
Seniors Haley Dendler and Malik
Abdeljaber get some last minute
practice in for Pre-Calculus.
As we approach the end of the
semester, we ask parents to remind
their seniors that in order to partici-
pate in graduation, all credits and
community service must be complet-
ed. Students who have not complet-
ed these requirements are not eligi-
ble to participate in the graduation
ceremony. College-bound seniors
are reminded that their prospective
schools reserve the right to rescind
their admissions offer if classes are
dropped or grades decline. The best
preparation for college includes con-
sistent study habits and a challenging
curriculum.
Senior Requirements
During the week of April 20th, coun-
selors will meet individually with their
juniors to discuss planning for after
high school. Please ask your junior
to share this information with you
after their meeting, and be sure to
reach out to their guidance counselor
with any questions.
Junior Counselor Meetings
Registration deadlines are approach-
ing for the May and June A.C.T. and
S.A.T. exam.
College-bound juniors may wish to
consider taking one or both of these
tests depending on their future plans.
A.C.T/S.A.T. For Juniors
Juniors who plan to apply to highly
selective schools, or schools on the
east or west coast, will probably
need to take an S.A.T., as well as
additional S.A.T. subject tests. If you
have questions or need additional
information, please contact the
Guidance Office or the college that is
under consideration.
By the time they return from summer
vacation, current juniors should have
decided on the colleges to which
they will apply. In order to do that,
they, along with their parents, should
be visiting prospective colleges this
spring and over the summer. There’s
nothing like a campus visit to get a
real picture of college life.
Do I Need To Take the S.A.T.?
College Deadlines for Juniors
Registration continues for second
semester summer school courses in
District 230. Most of the courses will
be offered at Carl Sandburg this
year. There are also a few enrich-
ment courses available at Andrew.
For further information, please con-
tact your Guidance Counselor.
Summer School bus transportation is
also available for a fee.
Summer School
Each year parents of good students
receive information in the mail, or via
e-mail, about honorary academic
societies and financial aid companies
that promise recognition and money
for their children—once a fee is paid.
We always caution parents regarding
organizations that require fees.
These programs are often money-
makers for the organization that is
being promoted. The Illinois Student
Assistance Commission and the
Illinois Association of College
Admissions Counselors recommends
“Fast Web” at www.fastweb.com
as a great source of information.
Thousands of scholarships are
available on this site, ready to be
matched to your child’s qualifications.
Financial Aid Scams
The Future of Financial AidWhile the federal government has freed up more loan
money for college students, it can become a burden on
students after they finish college. This points out the
importance of research when it comes to the topic of
financial aid and college planning. Some families get
caught up in the “name game” when selecting a college
instead of recognizing the value of minimizing student
undergraduate debt, especially for those students going
on to graduate school. Most colleges can give you infor-
mation on the average student debt that their students
have accumulated at the end of their college career.
Most can also give you information on how many stu-
dents graduate in four years. The answers to these
questions, along with a clear idea of a student’s career
path, can help minimize college debt. Most eighteen
year olds do not understand this topic as well as their
parents. Guidance counselors are happy to help in the
mediation of these discussions and to provide informa-
tion on financial aid.
Scholarships AwardedIf you have been awarded a scholarship, please let
Mrs. Driscoll know by emailing her at
Include the following information:
1. Name of University or organization awarding the
scholarship
2. Title/name of the award or scholarship
3. Amount of the award for each year over 4 years (if
applicable)
The amount of the awards will be kept confidential. The
district uses the totals for statistical data. You are not
required to share the financial information if you do not
wish to do so.

Guidance Guidance
Spring has yet to arrive but Thunder Nation is
hard at work. Our teams are hungry to play
and anxious to get and stay outside.
However, in the meantime, excitement is
brewing for what is sure to be an outstanding
spring for our teams, fans, and community!
The spring sport season is underway and
teams are eager to compete! The
enthusiasm for all teams is always very high
as the season begins. Many challenges will
be faced throughout the season as factors
like injuries, slumps, weather, and hot streaks
all enter into the picture, but our
determination and work will shine through!
Only one team can claim the IHSA state
championship at the end, but every team can
claim that they played like a champion no
matter the outcome. Here is hoping that
softball, baseball, boys’ and girls’ track,
badminton, boys’ and girls’ water polo, boys’
gymnastics, girls’ soccer, boys’ volleyball, and
boys’ tennis all play like champions and show
THUNDER PRIDE.
As March meshes into April and then quickly
advances into May, we look toward the end of
the 2014-15 sports’ seasons and look forward
toward 2015-2016.
Next year will be the 2nd year of the 2-year
cycle of conference contests for all of our 29
sports that the SWSC competes in. The
order is the same but the sites switch. The
divisions are based solely on enrollment with
the top half of the conference placed into the
BLUE division and the lowest half by
enrollment placed into the RED division by
sport. Because of our enrollment, we are in
the RED division for all sports where there
were two divisions (gymnastics is combined
for both boys and girls). This remains the
same for the 2015-16 season and then re-
evaluated for the next 2-year cycle. We now
know that all 16 teams will remain a member
of our conference finishing next season.
Not all schools have all of the 29 sports that
are offered. For 12 of these 29 sports, all
16 schools will field teams. In these sports
(Football, G. Volleyball, B/G Cross Country,
B/G Basketball, Wrestling, Baseball, Softball,
B/G Track and Cheerleading) the divisions
are:

conference games on the conference

sure this spring you also visit our website

DEANS’ Office:Parking Lot Review
As a way to continue to examine ways to create a
safe environment for our students, staff, and parents
at Andrew High School, we have recently connected
with the Tinley Park Police Department (TPPD) to
review our pick-up and drop-off procedures in our
parking lot.
This review has already developed an in-depth
study of the function of our parking lot done by the
Tinley Park Police Department. Additionally, the
TPPD has created a preliminary list of suggestions
on improvements to our parking lot that can make
the lot function more safely. School officials have
had an initial meeting with the TPPD to discuss
these suggestions and brainstorm other ideas.
The next step in the review will be a “car count” in
the spring by the Tinley Park Police Department.
This “car count” will give great insight into the num-
ber of cars that enter our lot and what areas of the
lot see most congestion. This information, along
with previous discussions, will help guide potential
changes to the pick-up and drop-off procedures in
our parking lot with the ultimate goal of having a
safe area for our students.
Once decisions have been made, the Tinley Park
Police Department and Andrew High School will
actively communicate this information to all students
and parents. In the meantime, please continue to
use safe driving practices while in our parking lot,
including driving slowly and watching for pedestri-
ans. Also, please be conscientious and respectful to
other drivers in the lot.
