Narrowing down where to retire was a challenge. We spent a couple of winters in Arizona and knew we didn’t want to be in a big town of retired people. The scenery in Verrado just felt right. We woke up one morning and found the neighbor mowing our lawn, because we hadn’t had time to buy a lawn mower yet. ~ Ray Hayward

IT’S TIME TO ENJOY VICTORY When we are passionate about something, we become energized and motivated. It’s our passion that propels us forward.

The passion Victory residents have for the Verrado community and in particular for our unique Victory neighborhood is palpable. Victory neighbors just want to be together. My evidence: the incredible levels of participation we saw across our community this past year.

From the moment we opened The Victory Club, the place has been buzzing. And that’s just the way we like it. Our Club calendar is packed with opportunities for neighbors to come together. And boy do you come together.

Take our Thursday Happy Hours – we’ve had to move the location to accommodate the number of attendees and the desire to linger longer together.

Or take the robust arts and crafts programming – we’ve had to take reservations weeks in advance to manage the growing popularity of many of these resident-led classes.

This year, we launched some founding traditions, providing more opportunities for residents to celebrate together.

Our inaugural CRUSH was a feast for the palate and a workout for the feet. We can’t wait for the day that we’ll be crushing grapes from our very own Victory Vineyard.

With Verrado®’s philanthropic spirit reaching peak levels, the Verrado Assembly formally launched The Giving Tree™ program to support accessible volunteer service opportunities with 21+ diverse nonprofit partners.

No doubt about it, Victory is pretty special. It is stunningly beautiful and filled with lots of passionate people. Our neighbors are energized and motivated, and we’re so glad for that. In the pages that follow, we have highlighted just some of the moments and milestones that distinguished our community in 2016.

Sincerely,

Todd Hornback President, Board of Directors Victory District Association, Inc.Director of Community LifeDMB Community Life, Inc.

ANNUAL TRADITIONS

Our house was rural and pretty isolated. We wanted to retire to a place with a sense of community and this seemed like a great choice. It’s a younger, more fun community here… we often came to Victory happy hours and found the folks here so welcoming and inclusive. ~ Nancy Kapp

FIRST ANNUAL CRUSHCRUSHED IT! | OCTOBER 15A supermoon-lit evening with the soulful sounds of The Sugar Thieves provided an elegant backdrop for an evening of great food and wine.

Members and friends mingled, sipped and nibbled their way through delicious food and wine pairing stations surrounding the perimeter of The Victory Club that included everything from antipasto to desserts, and from Ferry La Combe Haedus Rose to King Estate Pinot Gris.

Thirty-five teams of two worked in partnership to fill their bucket first in the CRUSH competition. One partner stomped in the barrel of grapes while the other partner kept the juice-carrying spout flowing.

Many competitors got into the “spirit” of the event. Most notably were Lucy Gambescia and Rebecca Horvath who took top honors for best costume, and Gary and Nancy Adams who were recognized for best team name, “Call Me a Cab.”

HARVEST DINNER | OCTOBER 23Twenty guests tucked into our harvest table to enjoy sies suntuosa curso, aka “six sumptuous courses,” artfully designed and matched perfectly with distinct wines from The Wagner Family. This “indulgent” and “magical” food and wine experience for all the senses was hosted by The Vic Bar + Kitchen.

Throughout the month of October, members enjoyed Yoga on the Lawn on Friday mornings.

SUNSET SOCIALOCTOBER 27Members gathered together for dessert and a toast to close out our month-long celebration of all things wine.

Victory is the perfect community for us. It’s first class. The views, the quality of things… and we’ve met so many great people and made so many great friends here. ~ Sharron Howell

FOUNDER’S DAY Of all Verrado’s annual traditions, Founder’s Day weekend is a shining example of our community coming together to make lasting memories.

COCKTAIL PARTY | APRIL 15Panoramic views from The Vic Bar + Kitchen provided a stunning backdrop for Verrado’s first party at The Victory Club, and it did not disappoint. Guests noshed on delicious southern comfort fare between mingling and dancing to the sounds of The Groove Merchants.

HERITAGE FUN RUN & PANCAKE BREAKFAST | APRIL 16Early risers raced for the challenge and fun in our 10K, 5K and 1 mile Fun Run. United Buckeye Fire Fighter Charities and volunteers from Feed My Starving Children served griddle pancakes. Generous donations and race proceeds raised over $800 between the two charities.

BLOCK PARTY ON MAIN STREET | APRIL 16Victory neighbors shared a Pre-Block Party cocktail before heading down to Main Street for partner-sponsored activities and performances by 28 talented neighbors in the Resident Variety Show. Signs declaring what someone personally “Fights For” filled the Village Green. Everyone sang along as Rachel Platten belted her hit ‘Fight Song.’

COMMUNITY PICNIC | APRIL 17 Traditions and competitions were the name of the game at Founders Park where residents, including our four-legged friends, earned spirit award points participating in DJ games and activities hosted by community clubs and partners.

SPIRIT OF INDEPENDENCE™

JULY 4A record number of participants gathered on Main Street for our quintessential small town annual Bike Parade of patriotic wheels, including golf carts, bicycles, scooters, wagons and even a miniature pony-drawn float. As is customary, Verrado’s fire fighters led the parade in an engine truck, ending with a Patriotic Party that included a Ferris wheel, pirate ship, carnival rides and DJ entertainment. The party continued at the Heritage Swim Park with live steel drum music and poolside games. That evening the Quad provided Victory residents a front-row seat to our community’s 12-minute Fireworks Spectacular over The Victory Club.

Fifteen tons of snow created a winter playground. Tractor-drawn wagon rides provided merriment. Children had an opportunity to visit with Santa to share their wish and capture a souvenir photo. The 50-foot holiday tree was lit by Verrado Middle School students.

THE VICTORY CLUBGRAND OPENING OF THE VICTORY CLUBThe Victory Club vision and plan is bold. And innovative. The intentional balance of public and private space creates unique opportunities for members-only as well as shared experiences between and among Victory residents and family and friends of all ages.

This stunning amenity in a spectacular location includes lots of unique spaces for members to gather together. And gather, we do. From informal socializing in the Sports Den to resident-organized clubs and classes in Arts with a View and Victory Hall to sunset views from the The Vic Bar + Kitchen patio, The Club is Victory’s social hub.

Since the grand opening in February, we made improvements to The Club as we learned how residents engaged with the space. 2016 improvements included: construction of additional pickleball courts; installation of secure access card entry points between public/private areas; building and directional signage; and parking lot and sidewalk improvements. In addition, we launched our House Account program, allowing residents a more convenient way to manage Club expenses.

The Victory Vineyard was featured in The Arizona Republic (August) highlighting experimentation in wine making across the West Valley.

LIFE PERFORMANCE TRAINING CENTER Healthy and engaged living is a cornerstone of life in Victory. The Life Performance Training Center sits at the center of it all.

Literally located in the heart of The Club, and figuratively serving as the foundation to many friendships that helped shape our community, Victory’s vibe stems from being fit and having fun.

In addition to offering core fitness programming like yoga, boot camp, stretch and conditioning, the fitness team offered fun and specialized classes like Happy Hour Yoga, Country Heat, Muscle and Mind, Barre Hopping (from barre to bar) as well as holiday-themed classes like Monster Mash Costume Class (October) and Ugly Sweater Synergy Boot Camp (December).

Outside the Life Performance Training Center, the team offered a series of health wellness lectures, Body-Mind Awareness classes, Active-Aging Week programs and field trips to try new fitness classes, like aerial yoga.

Victory residents took a road trip with Fitness Center Manager, Jeannette Dale, to participate in an ABC 15 Sonoran Living feature on Whole Body Wellness (August 5).

ARIZONA’S 2016 GENTLEMAN JACK COMPETITIONFinalist: The Vic Bar + Kitchen: Southern Pecan Cocktail

THE VIC BAR + KITCHENSince opening, The Vic Bar + Kitchen has been called “a gem in the West Valley” providing incredible food with unparalleled views.

For Victory members, The Vic offered exclusive food and drink activities and specials: educational and mixology classes for the gin and whiskey connoisseurs; wine, beer, vodka and tequila tastings for those that just want a taste; as well as cooking demonstrations to grill like a master and bake ala miniature cream pies like Betty Crocker.

The weekend starts early in Victory. Thursday night Happy Hour was prime time for Victory residents to gather together and enjoy food and drink specials from The Vic.

In the cooler months, the weekend gatherings continued at The Quad Bar on Friday and Saturday featuring “street fare.”

In the fall of 2016, The Vic launched its Happy Hour menu responding to resident feedback for more bar and snack food options.

The Arizona Republic dining critic, Dominic Armato, raved about The Vic calling it “a refreshing sip of cool water” (July) and naming it one of “10 Phoenix-Area Restaurants for Spectacular Date Night” (August).

There’s nothing neater than a downtown. It adds that flair, that excitement. It’s just fun to be in a community that has that. And you can walk or take your bicycle. I can walk anywhere I want, and I can run anywhere I want. I can take a stroller and walk my grandchildren. ~ Bridget Niehus

DISTRICT UPDATESHERITAGE DISTRICT Construction began on 122 two-story town homes with attached two-car garages ranging in size from 1,700 to 2,470 square feet. The owner, BB Living, shares Verrado’s vision for community and commitment to community standards. These town homes surrounding Heritage Swim Park and opening in 2017 will address the growing demand for high-quality rental opportunities in Verrado and the Southwest Valley.

With two fully lit baseball fields and a soccer field overlay, Redmond Field – adjacent to Heritage Swim Park and Verrado Heritage Elementary School – became home to a wide variety of sports, recreation and event programming since opening in the spring.

Residents “beat the heat” all summer long at the Heritage Swim Park. Summer of Splash included poolside family-friendly events and activities like music and dive-in movies.

MAIN STREET DISTRICTAnderson Institute of Music and Performing Arts picked up their fourth “Official Best of Arizona” performing arts instruction award from Media World USA.

Tempo Urban Bistro celebrated three years on Main Street. Founders and proprietors Steven and Karen Maynard (also Verrado residents) celebrated their October anniversary by introducing a new menu.

In June, Edward Jones opened its doors. Residents Robin and Wayne Polk run this investment company offering a personal approach to investing.

In October, Pioneer Title opened providing a broad range of title insurance, escrow and construction loan services.

Verrado Realty moved into their headquarters in the Jackson Building elevating the residential real estate group’s visibility.

MARKETSIDE DISTRICT As the needs of the Verrado community and the greater region grow, so too are the services and conveniences offered at Verrado’s 60-acre mixed-use Marketside District at the I-10 and Verrado Way community entry.

Culver’s opened in June satisfying residents with ButterBurgers, Fresh Frozen Custard and Wisconsin Cheese Curds.

Verrado Coffee Company expanded to reflect the growing story of our community, adding a topography table, new community photography and lots of great information about our town, homes and builders.

And in 2017, locally owned and operated Dominion Self-Storage and fast-growing Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry will open, joining Banner Health and Corner Store.

IN THE NEWSFeatured in The Culture Trip article Top 8 Restaurants in Buckeye, Arizona, Verrado Coffee Company (VCC) draws people from all over for a delicious and perky taste of Verrado; VCC was also recognized by Phoenix Magazine for bringing “a touch of cosmopolitan to the West Valley.”

Other segments included a visit to our hometown Bashas’ bakery, students from all of Verrado’s schools dancing and cheering, treatments from The Spa at The Victory Club, interviews with Mayor Meck and Councilman Eric Orsborn, a VIP (Verrado Instant Party) on the Green, a tour of Verrado Golf Club, features of The Giving Tree program and our partner organizations and performances by students of Anderson Institute of Music and Performing Arts.

VERRADO.COM The online hub for Verrado and Victory got a fresh new look this year. In an ongoing effort to improve the resident experience, the revamped site launched in April with an even more robust resident-only section full of special content. Whether on a phone, tablet or desktop, residents can login and access everything Verrado and Victory at Verrado on any device.

With so many exciting goings on in and around the neighborhood, it’s important for residents to stay “in the know.” So in 2016, the Community Life Team launched two new Victory communications tools – a weekly email communication (This Week at The Victory Club) and a monthly newsletter (The Victory Vine).

VERRADO HOME SALESRECORDBREAKING YEAR This past year, the Verrado community sold more than 400 homes, including 107 homes in Victory. That’s an increase of more than 20 percent over 2015 sales – making 2016 the strongest sales year since Verrado’s 2004 grand opening.

This upward sales momentum earned Verrado the #20 spot on the national list of best-selling master-planned communities for 2016 according to new reports released by real estate industry analysts RCLCO (Robert Charles Lesser & Company). Only two other Arizona communities ranked in the top 20.
