On another occasion Ceja roun- ded up three busloads of people to protest the City of Oxnard’s plans to exercise eminent domain for a project. “I don’t want any development in Colonia that is going to remove something else,” Ceja said. “As long as I live in Colonia, I’ll fight for the people.” Ceja is particularly pleased his efforts have resulted in much-nee- ded improvements to Colonia, where he has lived since 1962. Most recently Ceja worked with city officials to get long overdue street and sidewalk improvements to Colonia scheduled for later this year. “There’s the alleys that are all shot, they need to be redone; we’ve got real bad alleys,” Ceja said, adding that some hadn’t been resurfaced since 1941. “I got so mad, I told the City Council I was disgusted with all the work that needs to be done in Colonia,” Ceja said. But his out- burst prompted Councilmember Carmen Ramirez to ask for the ma- tter to get placed on an upcoming meeting agenda, Ceja said. “I felt good that I got it on the agenda, so now we’re going to get our si- dewalks fixed,” Ceja said. Besides sidewalks, Phase 1 of the improvement project will include re- placement of old copper water pipes that have reached the end of their life, said Ben Cassel of Oxnard’s Public Works Dept. That part of the project should begin Nov. 16, with a second phase following in May 2017, Cassel said. The scope of the project will cover a large chunk of Colonia, from Ca- mino del Sol to East Colonia along Roosevelt, Juanita, Bonita, Hayes, Audra and Garfield Streets. The sidewalks will have rolled, or sloped, curbs as opposed to ones with straight 90 degree drops to make them compliant with the American Disabilities Act, said Cossel. That’s also easier just because straight curbs would require property lines to be moved, “and nobody’s interested in having property owners move their fences back,” Cossel said. Ceja left June 2 for his hometown of Saginaw, Mich., where he cele- brated his birthday with his twin brother Noel and his niece’s high school graduation on the same day, June 18, before returning to Oxnard to his usual routine. “It took a man from Sagainaw, Mich. to help the people of Colonia,” Ceja joked. “It’s not really a bad area to live in Colonia is what it is. Colonia has ups and downs, just like the whole city,” said Ceja. From 2006 through 2016, Infante solicited dozens of victims, most of whom were Ventura County residents, to invest money with

him. The investments ostensibly funded development and marketing of sports-related products Infante claimed he invented and owned. Infante persuaded investors his products were commercially viable and would produce spectacular returns. Infante told victims he was pursuing patents and had ob-tained licensing deals with major professional sports organizations, franchises, and product manufac-turers. To support his false claims, Infante circulated agreements pur-portedly between his company and third-party companies. The compa-nies never did business with Infante and the agreements were forged.

The specific charges Infante admitted related to recent crimes resulting in losses to 12 victims totaling $300,000. Ventura Supe-rior Court Judge Patricia Murphy ordered Infante to pay restitution to victims he defrauded as early as 2006. In total Infante was ordered to pay restitution to 111 victims totaling approximately $1,050,000.

California Lutheran University is launching a Center for Nonprofit Leadership to provide needed training for the region’s charities.

Dena Jenson, who led the former Center for Nonprofit Leadership at the Ventura County Commu-nity Foundation (VCCF), is the director.

The Cal Lutheran center’s pri-mary focus will be affordable pro-fessional development workshops for nonprofit board members, staff and volunteers. The sessions will provide hands-on training in man-agement skills and opportunities to connect and collaborate with peers. Jenson and volunteers who are respected leaders in their fields will lead the workshops, which are scheduled to begin in September. Additional resources for nonprof-its will be available online.

The center will offer workshops at Cal Lutheran’s main campus in Thousand Oaks, where it is based, and at the university’s Oxnard Center. Funding will come from participation fees, memberships, corporate sponsorships, grants and donations.

Nonprofits constitute a vital segment of the community. In Ventura County alone, there are more than 3,300 registered non-profits ranging from all-volunteer efforts to large organizations such

Dena Jensonas hospitals and universities. They account for $2.6 billion in annual revenue and $5 billion in assets.

“Investing in the nonprofit sec-tor and its leaders is more import-ant than ever, and it would be hard to find a more effective investment

with such lasting returns,” Jenson said.

Jenson was the vice president and director of the VCCF Center for Nonprofit Leadership from 2005 until it closed in September. The center, which was launched 25

years ago, served more than 800 organizations each year under her direction. Cal Lutheran is working with VCCF as it moves forward with plans for the new center.

“We’re incredibly fortunate that Dena has agreed to serve as direc-tor,” said Cal Lutheran President Chris Kimball. “Her considerable experience will enable us to hit the ground running on this critical endeavor.”

For the last year, Jenson has been the interim executive director of the Alliance for the Arts. Prior to joining VCCF, the Ventura resi-dent served as program and public policy director at the Perinatal Advisory Council in Los Angeles and as program director for the Los Angeles County Department of Health. She has also lectured at Cal Lutheran and Pepperdine University. She has served on the California Association of Non-profits Board of Directors and is a past chair of the local chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

A public event celebrating the center’s opening will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sept. 7 in Lundring Events Center on the Thousand Oaks campus. For more informa-tion on the center, contact Jenson at [email protected] or 805-493-3677.

Guilty of fraudulent...

The 2nd annual mariachi extravaganza

The Oceanview Pavilion Per-forming Arts Theatre by the Beach located at 575 E. Surfside Drive, Port Hueneme in collaboration with Mariachi De Mi Tierra is host-ing the 2nd Annual Mariachi Ex-travaganza July 28, 2016 5:00 pm – 10:00 pm, which represents the culmination of local high school mariachi programs. This free community event features many talented locally known mariachis such as Hueneme High’s spirited and award winning “Mariachi De Mi Tierra” and “Mariachi Aguilas de Oxnard” who performed for presidential candidate Hillary Clinton “Get Out the Vote” event June 4th, at the Hueneme High School. With performances by, Mariachi Camarillo, Mariachi Cihualteco, Mariachi Orgullo de Mexico and more, this is an event you will not want to miss! The concert will showcase and portray Hispanic culture and promote the many wonderful Mariachi groups in Oxnard.

Without the help of Antonio and Dominic Rivera, teachers in the Oxnard Union High School Dis-trict for over 7 years, none of this would have been possible. These two exceptional brothers are very talented mariachi instructors and musicians that go to each and every high school in the Oxnard Union High School District five days a

week to inspire others to develop a passion towards mariachi, as they have developed their own throughout the years. According to Antonio or “Tony”, who has been playing the guitarron for 22 years and is currently doing so, says “mariachi is my life, there is nothing I wouldn’t do to help others understand how beautiful mariachi is.” From being a part of the mariachi program for years, his brother Dominic believes that “music speaks what some people wish to say and it also soothes the mind, heals the heart and soul. In my opinion mariachi has helped me learn to appreciate my Hispanic culture and be able to express my love for it. As a teenager, I always felt mariachi as a positive hobby, but today, I see it as another half of who I am. It has really connected me to school throughout musical education and if it weren’t for

mariachi, I wouldn’t be who I am today.”

Our goal for this event is to raise over $5,000 and the students need your support! There is no better investment than for the children in our community, such a great way to give back to our Future America. Through sponsorship opportuni-ties, and raffles these funds will be used toward music, instruments, uniforms, transportation and field trips. It is amazing to see so many exceptional groups contribute their talents, time and tireless energy, come together to express their love for music through mariachi.

Free parking in “Lot E” has been provided by The City of Port Hueneme for your convenience.

For more information regard-ing the concert and sponsorship opportunities contact Antonio or Dominic Rivera (805) 795-6021 or via e-mail: [email protected].

Trump declares 4th war...calls the new China. No more “open border,” no more smuggled drugs, he will round up and deport every single illegal alien from Mexico and their American citizen families; he will stop any American company that wants to move to Mexico by threatening them. He will defeat Mexico, he says.

The United States declared war against Mexico in 1846 when Presi-dent James Polk decided he wanted to steal California from Mexico. He se-cretly ordered U.S. Marine Lieutenant Archibald Gillespie to San Diego, Alta California, in civilian clothes with or-ders to organize American ex-patriates covertly to take the original settlement of California and the region’s finest harbor away from the Mexicans by force of arms.

Months later Polk secretly ordered the U.S. Army to invade Mexican territory south of Texas to provoke a counter-attack so he could ask Con-gress for a declaration of war. Mexico was invaded, California was taken. The U.S. Army occupied Mexico City. The U.S. written peace treaty forced Mexico to sign it and its giveaway of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Utah and parts of present day Kansas and Oklahoma. The U.S. left Mexico owning half of Mexico’s territory.

The United States invaded Mexico again in 1914. Mexican forces arrest-ed a dozen American sailors in the port of Tampico, Mexico. They were released within an hour but the U.S. Naval Commander demanded the Mexicans fly an American flag and fire a 21 gun salute. The Mexicans refused. President Woodrow Wilson

ordered an invasion then asked Con-gress for authority the following day.

Marines landed at and took the ports of Veracruz and Tampico. The U.S. held these vital ports for seven months before they left. Wilson invaded to help a Wilson favorite, Venustiano Carranza, take power.

Carranza was president when Woodrow Wilson invaded Mexico again in 1916 to retaliate against rebel General Pancho Villa’s raid on Columbus, New Mexico.

Named the “Punitive Expedition” its 6,000 soldiers failed to find and punish Pancho Villa. He enjoyed watching the Americans chase their tails. Contact with Carranza’s federal forces led to a battle at Carrizal in Chihuahua between Pershing’s old regiment, the Black Buffalo soldiers of the 10th Cavalry and the Mexicans. The Mexicans won and captured 23 soldiers. The Army was ordered home to prepare for a war in Europe in 1917.

There would be no more American war on Mexico until June 16, 2016 when real estate man Donald Trump “declared” war on Mexico for “rip-ping” off the United States in trade, for sending its criminals and rapists to the U.S. and for stealing American jobs through the two-decade old North American Free Trade Agreement – NAFTA – that he called the “worst” trade agreement ever negotiated by the United States.

In 2014 and 2015, the U.S. and Mexico did over a trillion dollars in trade, making Mexico our third largest trading partner.

Proof, he says, the $54 billion trade deficit with Mexico. More proof, he says, is American car manufacturers

building cars in multi-billion dollar Mexican factories built by American companies as well as by Asian and German car companies. The auto industry is growing exponentially in Mexico for three basic reasons, Mexico’s trade agreements allows all American/Asian and German com-panies to sell Mexican-made cars in 100 nations.

The 19 auto plants in Mexico send cars to the U.S. duty free under NAFTA. Conversely, Mexican new car dealers feature “imported” cars from the U.S. that they sell at premi-um rates. The third reason: wages. American unions have driven labor costs astronomically high, too high to be competitive in the world.

Experts are quick to point out that the growing Mexican auto industry has joined with the American car industry to keep thousands of small American vendors necessary for a healthy car industry in business and growing. The nexus of the large com-panies with this supply train allow the North American car industry to compete vigorously with Asian com-panies that themselves are building plants in Mexico in order to compete with NAFTA companies.

Add to that, the facts that fewer Mexicans are coming to the U.S. than are returning to Mexico and that every study made about criminal ac-tivity shows that Mexican immigrants commit fewer crimes than native-born Americans and we have a pompous presidential candidate that doesn’t know what he is talking about. He is less informed than his demonstrably uneducated base of support; some-thing no one would think possible. VIDA Newspaper

Trump elige vicepresidenteEl magnate Donald Trump eli-

Hijo mío, debo aclararte algo: yo no envío castigos a nadie.
