The need for occupational health and safety is as evident as it was 100 yrs ago
270 mil.s occupational accidents360.000 fatalities
Globalization
The process has not succeeded in equalising the conditions of work (but the opposite). Gaps are increasing.
Causes of poor safety:Poverty, inequality, underdevelopment Illiteracy, lack of educationPoor access to health servicesLow social protection
The ICOH wants to call International Organizations…
…to join forces for improvement of the conditions of work, health, safety and well-being at work and to provide basic occupational health services to all working people throughout the world
…and calls for actions
Prevention and control through legal and appropriate means
Development of working conditions Provision of occupational health services Research efforts Adopt occupational health as a basic right
of working people
WORKPLACE SAFETY AND THE EU
It is based on the article 31 of the Charter of the Fundamental Rights:
“every worker has the right to working conditions which respect his or her health,
safety and dignity”
HEALTH AND SAFETY AT WORK IN THE SOCIAL POLICY IN THE UNION
More than 18 directives adopted by the Council and the European Parliament have entered into force since 1992
EUROSAFE VISION

Making the working place a safer place where to work in Europe
ITALIAN REGIONS
VENETO REGION
VENETO REGION (CONT.)
VENETO REGION
“food for thoughts”…
while in the EU 15 area construction sector accounted for 11% of fatal accidents in 2001, in Veneto Region the figure is 40% of all work related fatal accidents registered in 2002, 2003 and 2004
CONCLUSIONS
Despite evident achievements and success in the last years it should be noted that cross-regional differences are often hidden by national or European figures.
Prevention policies and actions need these differencies be taken into account
