Auburn University is an equal opportunity employer/educational institution

This is an intensive five-week academic language and culture program for undergraduate students in Vienna, Austria. No previous knowledge of German is required, and it may be possible to fulfill your one-year language requirement while abroad. The program offers German classes at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced level as well as culture courses in English. If sufficient demand exists, it is also possible to take Political Science, History or Art History courses in Vienna for credit in those departments at Auburn University

One of the main objectives of the program is to provide students with an opportunity for a concentrat-ed study of German in order to broaden their compe-tence in the language. In addition, the program seeks to offer students a meaningful introduction to the rich heritage of European civilization as well as a broad picture of modern-day Austrian and/or European culture. The academic program is designed to accommodate the needs, interests, and proficiency levels of individual learners.

After acceptance into the program, students must print the Course Approval Form, consult with the Program Director about course work, and obtain departmental signatures. Upon admission to the program, all participants will be responsible for full payment of all fees and costs by the deadlines indicated.

Students will stay in private homes with host families. Room and partial board includes breakfast.

Vienna, known for its outstanding contributions to music, art and intellectual thought, is one of the great cosmopolitan cities of Europe. Vienna’s open air theaters, concert halls and breathtaking museums, its Gothic churches and Baroque palaces, the imperial parks and gardens, make it an ideal place for students to extend their learning experience beyond the classroom. It has been home to emperors, artists, scientists, philosophers, writers, and musicians who have played leading roles in the politics, art and literature of Europe for more than a millennium. Its wealth of stunning architecture bears witness to a city of artisans and builders. Vienna’s importance as part of the musical legacy of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mahler, and Schönberg is recognized throughout the world. Acclaimed for the world-renowned Vienna Boys Choir and Spanish Riding School, Vienna also gave rise to Freud and modern psychology, Loos and modern architecture, and Wittgenstein and modern philosophy. With its key position between East and West, Vienna also offers students many travel opportunities. The program includes excursions to other cities in Austria and/or Europe, and also has two program-free weekends for students to travel on their own or in small groups. In Vienna itself, opportunities such as a city bus tour and a one-day boat trip on the Danube are possible.

Upon arrival in Vienna, students will be given a walking tour and an orientation before classes begin. Classes run in the morning and early afternoon Monday through Thursday. Students will be taking undergraduate language and culture courses at the Austro-American Institute (AAIE) which is located in the heart of Vienna, directly across the street from the Vienna State Opera House. Most faculty members in Vienna will be native Austrians. Students may earn up to 8 semester hours of undergraduate credit in German courses (or Political Science, History or Art History courses; see Director for details). Placement and previous course work will determine the level and number of credits which students may receive. The program offers a three-day, two-night stay in Prague or Cracow as well as a possible second excursion. Past excursions have included Munich (with a visit to Neuschwanstein/Cinderella’s castle) and Salzburg. Student passes for unlimited access to Vienna’s public transportation system are provided so that students can discover the city’s many cultural offerings.

Space is limited and students must file formal applications as soon as they know for sure they are participating. Complete the Auburn Abroad Application online and wait for confirmation from the Program Director. Non-Auburn University students must also be accepted as transient students by AU ($50) and attach a transcript to qualify for the Summer Abroad program. All AU and non-AU students must submit the completed Auburn Abroad Application. (See http://www.auburn.edu/forlang “Study Abroad” for link to application.)
