1. KEY HIGHLIGHTS • Vietnamese Youth Academy (VYA) is opening a call for new applicants andmembershiprenewals,theapplicationsareavailableonVYAwebsite,thedeadlineis30th October 2017. VYA is non-paying fee membership organization, therefore,members are expected to contribute to its activities. Renewal is required for allmembersafter theirs firstyearof their initialmembership.Allmembersadmittedfrom2014-2016,pleaseapplyforrenewal.
• DrTranQuangHuy(ChairofVYA)presentedVYAatthe3rdWorldwideMeetingofYoungAcademies(WWMYAs)inJohannesburg,SouthAfricafrom19thto21stJuly2017.The3rdWWMYAswas hosted by the South African Young Academy of Science (SAYAS) and co-organisedbytheGlobalYoungAcademy(GYA).
- Onthefirstday(19thJuly),therewastheannualconferenceofyoungscientistsoftheSAYASwiththetheme“YoungScientists’RoleinScienceAdvice”.Threemainsessions,withmore than ten talks,were representedby SAYASmembers.Themain topicwaswhatyoungscientistscoulddotoachievetheSustainableDevelopmentGoals(SDGs).
- During theWWMYAs, therewere70delegates representing forover35NYAs,youngacademyinitiatives,GYA,andtheUnitedNationsMajorGroupforChildrenandYouth(UNMGCY).Themeetingfocusedonthetheme“OneHealth:HealthandDevelopmentinthecontextofanUrbanisingPlanetandImplicationsforSciencePolicy”.Duringtwodays of the meeting, there were 7 sessions covering various topics, but it mainlyfocused on the role of National Young Academies in achieving the UN’s SDGs. Sixnational young academies includingAzerbaijan,Germany,Poland, Sri Lanka, Sweden,andSouthAfricahavesharedtheirexperiencesincludingtheirmembership,activities,strength and challenges. Dr. Huy has contributed a poster entitled “The Role ofVietnameseYoungScholarsfortheOneHealthApproachinVietnam”.
- AllparticipantshavealsodiscussedabouttheroleofNYAsfornationalimplementation,capacity building and policy setting in respect of SDGs 3, 8 and 11; activities,opportunities,barriersandthefutureimpactofNYAs.Howtoengageyoungscientists?Howcantheyshapethenarrativeofsciencepolicyasyoungscientists?
- During the meeting, Dr. Huy has discussed with other young scientists in AsiancountriestoestablishanetworkofAsianyoungscientists.Thewebsiteofthenetworkwillbelaunchedsoon.
