I want to talk about the realization by average citizens that manufacturing is a significant force in our economy and how this came to be. It started in 1989 with eleven founding members deciding that manufacturing needed its own forum and that its message could best be told by its members directly. It continued through the 90's with increased emphasis on selected audiences. Three examples: Professional Progress was begun not only to develop managerial and professional skills of participants, but to educate both manufacturers and environmental regulators on how to protect the environment by working together. "Thank You, Teachers" was FCMA's attempt to help us and the classroom teacher appreciate each other. The goal was to encourage greater emphasis on math and science by showing that great careers exist in manufacturing. Legislative agendas, coupled with regular meetings with local, state and national elected leaders focused on manufacturing contributions and needs to stay competitive, but also to understand the complications and demands on these officials. Recently we have broadened our reach to more the general public. Beginning three years ago, we have expanded to include the following: * Created a PR Committee to focus our message beyond our membership. * Retained a PR firm, Empire Communications , whose specific goal is to publicize FCMA and its members' activities and achievements. We want manufacturing's positive stories to be in every media outlet at least weekly. * Opened the FCMA website to be more available to the public while making it more user-friendly for our members. Response to the new improved website, designed by Bryant Design, has exceeded expectations.

APRIL 2006 4/15/2006

You've sent mail... and it's being read! The ploy on the popular Tom Hanks movie "You've Got Mail" is appropriate for FCMA. Certainly, NorthFlorida is experiencing a renaissance unequaled in our contemporary history... but, that is the subject of another editorial.

I want to talk about the realization by average citizens that manufacturing is a significant force in oureconomy and how this came to be. It started in 1989 with eleven founding members deciding that manufacturing needed its own forum and that its message could best be told by its members directly. It continued through the 90's with increased emphasis on selected audiences. Three examples:

Professional Progress was begun not only to develop managerial and professional skills of participants, but to educate both manufacturers and environmental regulators on how to protect the environment by working together.

* Retained a PR firm, Empire Communications, whose specific goal is to publicize FCMA and its members' activities and achievements. We want manufacturing's positive stories to be in every media outlet at least weekly.

* Opened the FCMA website to be more available to the public while making it more user-friendly for our members. Responseto the new improved website, designed by Bryant Design, has exceeded expectations.

* Published the second edition of "Manufacturing on the First Coast," which features members and significant activities of importance to the general public. Clements Publishing and its associates are to be commended for their professionalism and insight.

Each of these outreach programs since 1989 are important, but not sufficient to sway opinion. Collectively, a different story emerges--one in which we are recognized as a strong contributor to our economy, but also that we are good corporate citizens who want this region to prosper and maintain its unique quality of life.

FCMA members, you've sent mail and it's being read--thank you!
