This year has seen a

bumper year of

nominations for the 2015

Yorkshire Young Achievers

Awards. The judges met last

month and have selected

an outstanding group of

young winners who will be

presented with their Award

at the Gala Dinner in

November.

Awards Judge and Foundation Trustee, Zoe Webber said: “Every year the talent,

achievement and success of those nominated never ceases to amaze the judges. It’s a tough

job that seems to get more difficult.

“Support for the Awards has been incredible with many of our supporters attending year

after year. Over 380 people have already booked and it promises to be a very special

occasion”

of Harrogate.

This year’s Gala Dinner will be held on Thursday 19 November in the Centenary Pavilion at

RHEA REACHES FOR THE TOP

A young Baildon athlete has been given a boost in her bid to reach

the very top with a grant from the Yorkshire Young Achievers

Foundation.

Rhea Southcott is now ranked number one in the UK in Combined

Events at Under-15, both indoors and outdoors. She aims to compete

in pentathlon and heptathlon events in the future, emulating her role

model, Olympic and World heptathlon gold medallist Jessica Ennis-

Hill. She added to her tally recently when she took the Yorkshire

County Athletics trophy for the Pentathlon, in the under-15 girls’

competition.

Rhea, who represents Yorkshire Athletics, competes in the five

combined events of 75m hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and

800m, and was given a grant towards specialist equipment to help

with her training by the Foundation which supports young people

across Yorkshire.

Coached at Leeds City Athletics Club by Matt Barton, Rhea is the only

Yorkshire athlete in the national top 20 rankings in Combined

Events.

Foundation Trustee Ron Miller said: “Rhea needed new equipment and we are delighted to have been able to help her. She is wor king

hard to become as successful as she can and is just the type of youngster that the Foundation was established to support.”

CREATING OPPORTUNITY The Foundation has made a grant to set up the Yorkshire Young Achievers Bursary at Kings College London. The grant will help less

advantaged people from Yorkshire study at Kings College, a global top 20 university. An education at Kings College opens doors for

new opportunities for its students. The College has one of the highest graduate employment rates at 92% and some of the highe st

starting salaries. This grant will help students from Yorkshire who are unable to take up a place at Kings due to the high cost of living in

London.

JACK TAKES TO THE SKIES Our 2014 Personality of

the Year, Jack Marshall,

achieved a lifetime

ambition in July whilst

once again raising

money for the

Yorkshire Young

Achievers Foundation.

Jack achieved his dream

by jumping 15,000 feet

out of a plane, the

highest skydive allowed to be done in the UK, at Hibaldstow Airfield in North

Lincolnshire.

Jack said on his JustGiving page "I consider myself to be incredibly lucky in my life, some

people who don't know me would question that when they hear that I have Moebius

Syndrome, I am blind in one eye, I wear dual hearing aids, I have no nerves in my face so

am unable to smile, no cerebellum so have no balance or co ordination (my mum calls me

her wibbly wobbly boy) I am perhaps facing major surgery on my right leg. I don't know

and I take my life a day at a time, I challenge myself daily, I love people and I love my life. I

have so much compared to some and I want to try and pay back some of the money that

the Foundation gave to me to purchase my racing chair. Thank you for reading and for

your support. Love Jack --”

Jack, who first won the Youngster of the Year Award back in 2007, has been a long term

supporter of the Awards. Despite having severe disabilities which affect his sight, hearing,

co-ordination and balance, he has raised tens of thousands of pounds for other people,

including for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

The Foundation was delighted

to learn that the woman behind

the seamless and sparkling

production of the Yorkshire

Young Achievers Awards has

taken on a new role.

Nicola Corp, who has been a

Trustee of the Yorkshire Young

Achievers Foundation since its

formation, has been appointed as the Producer of the 2016

York Mystery Plays, which are to be staged in York Minster

for the first time in 16 years. The box office will open in

January.

Nicola was a producer for the BBC in London for many years

and also worked for Capital Radio before returning to her

native Yorkshire in 2007. Since her return, she has delivered

a variety of events, both corporate and creative. She

continued her career at the BBC, working in Salford, but her

new commute will be less arduous from her home in the

Dales.

Guests at the Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards may

recognise her as the lady behind the production desk who

keeps everything in the right place and running to time.

Nicola said: “Producing the York Mystery Plays is a one-in-a-

lifetime opportunity and a hugely exciting challenge.

However, I would not miss the Yorkshire Young Achievers

Awards for the world and look forward to hearing about

some fantastic winners again this year.”

The Trustees were very sad to hear of the passing of former Yorkshire Young Achiever winner Justin Wilson. Justin, who won the 2003

Achievement in Sport Award, died competing in the IndyCar Series in the United States. He had competed in Formula One in the 2003

season with Minardi and Jaguar and was the winner of the 2001 International Formula 3000 championship. He later competed in the

Champ Car series from 2004 to 2007 and was also a winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona. The seven-time IndyCar race winner from

Sheffield is survived by his wife, Julia, and two daughters. Our condolences are with Justin’s family at this time.

A TRIP TO FLAMINGO LAND THANKS TO YOUNG ACHIEVERS The Yorkshire Young Achievers Foundation has once again provided a grant to Downs Syndrome North Yorkshire to enable them to take a group of children

with Downs Syndrome and their carers on a trip to Flamingo Land in Yorkshire. The grant, which was added to by sponsorship fr om the Harrogate Poker

League, helped towards the cost of entry and coach travel .

Trustee, Sonia Jones said: “We were delighted to help Downs Syndrome North Yorkshire once again and we are glad they had a lovely day.”

LETTER FROM SHANNON

We were delighted to receive an update from grant recipient, Shannon Rewcrowft.

You may remember Shannon received a grant from the Foundation a few years

ago to help with her training as an actor.

We are pleased to hear that Shannon has been busy, appearing in a number of

plays around the country such as Coal Girls in the North-East, The Ladykillers in

Hull and Fairyland The Musical.

Shannon was also selected to be part of Get Seen 2015 at the West Yorkshire

Playhouse, this unique showcase event offered a platform for just eight Yorkshire

artists to be seen by industry professionals.

Later in the year Shannon will be performing as Ellie the Elf in the Christmas production by the Imagine Theatre

and then in 2016 she will be part of a full scale production by the Reversed Shakespeare Company.

It’s lovely as always to hear how our grant recipient's are getting on and we wish Shannon continued success.
