4 DON CARLO
Don Carlo is often considered Verdi’s most Wagnerian work. Itmakes use of the evolving structure of the Musiktheater, madeso popular by Wagner, and introduces several motives that canbe seen almost as Wagnerian leitmotifs. Verdi creates an entirepolitical world set in Spain during the reign of Philip II. Theopera follows four members of the Habsburg family:
Philip II, King of all the world, son of an Emperor and ruler of a kingdom that “the sunnever sets upon." Champion of the Catholic faith, devoted ruler and supporter of theInquisition. This man rules his empire from a small room in the bowels of the Escurialpalace. Likened by his enemies to a spider at the center of its web. At the time of theopera he has married three times. His current wife he married in spite of the fact that shehad originally been promised to his son, Don Carlo. This marriage is one of the greatestburdens of his life. He does not know how to love. He is fiercely anti-protestant. Hispresence is felt oppressively in Flanders, a hot-bed of this new and troublesome movement. He has unleashed his armies and the Inquisition upon them.
Elisabetta, Queen of Spain, daughter of Katharina de Medici and the King of France. Shehas been the pawn in a long political game. In the first act of the five-act version of theopera we see how she falls in love with Don Carlo, Infante of Spain, only to be cruelly givento the father, the actual ruler of Spain at the end of the act. The rest of the opera concernsher misery at the Spanish Court, obliged to be the very correct queen of a very correctmonarch, and yet confronted daily by a former suitor whom she must now address as"son." In a confused world, she is a beacon of light and hope.
Don Carlo, the Infante or Prince of Spain. The son of Philip’s marriage to Maria of Portugal,Don Carlo is hot-tempered and passionate. He is not as rational: he is emotional.Disillusioned by his failed betrothal to Elisabetta, perturbed by having to call the woman heloves "mother,” Carlo finds a cause in the sufferings of the people of Flanders and takes uptheir plight only to find himself a prime target of the Inquisition. The opera concerns hisredemption. He changes a futile love into the passion of moral politics, barely escaping thetwin hammers of Church and State.
Legend states that Charles the 5th, the Habsburg emperor who conquered Flanders for Spainhas died and that his ghost haunts the monastery in the Escurial. He is also said to haverenounced worldly acts. He abdicated in favor of his son Philip who would never be Emperorbut would be King of a realm larger than ever imagined in human history. His tomb is thesetting for the first and last acts of Don Carlo: the place where Don Carlo finds his redemption.
These family members are sequestered in the Palace of the Escurial, which legend tells us islike the lair of a large spider. They share this dark realm with some powerful courtiers. Thesepersons all have their own agendas and wait like jackals for the Habsburg lions to feed.
Rodrigo Marquis of Posa. If there is truly a good and honest man in the opera it is Posa.He believes in the future of the Flemish people. Adept at the ways of court, he is a loyalfriend to Carlo and Elisabetta and is trusted by the King. He is however feared and enviedby the Grand Inquisitor who continually plots his demise.
The Princess Eboli is the female serpent of the palace. Attached to the Queen’s court, she is aspy for the King as well as his mistress. Behind the scenes she agitates for the undoing of thefamily. She protests that she loves Don Carlo yet swears to expose him when she realizes thathe has eyes only for the Queen. After her final betrayal is exposed she changes and desiresto help those she has sought to destroy. She is one of Verdi’s most fascinating characters.
The Grand Inquisitor is the center of power for the State and the Church at the same time.He is beyond morality. The Inquisition prosecuted Jews, Moors, and heretics in an attemptto make Spain a pure and true Catholic kingdom. The Inquisitor serves a God who wasable to sacrifice his own Son and urges Philip to do the same for a higher purpose.
Don Carlo storms across the stage like the most intense Shakespearian drama. As inShakespeare’s histories the characters are historical– but they live in a world created throughliterature. By marrying the plot of Don Carlo to the conventions of the grand opera, Verdichallenged European convention and created a masterpiece based on the struggle of theindividual against the unity of Church and State. Don Carlo is redeemed finally, narrowlyescaping the Inquisition with the aid of Elisabetta. These star-crossed lovers are deeply awareof their political identities. Don Carlo’s fate raises important questions about our own time.

10 DON CARLO
Royal Family, Royal TragedyBY MARY JANE PHILLIPS-MATZ
Tragedy abounds in opera; and Giuseppe Verdi’s DonCarlo stands among the finest tragedies of the genre. In itVerdi reached his creative peak as a composer, creating agripping music drama that resembles no other work of his;and it vividly displays his absolute command of his art. Norcould anything be finer or nobler than this.
Strangely, Don Carlo also leads us to an understandingof Verdi as a man -- his mind, heart, and spirit. And theword "strangely" is appropriate and even quite remarkable, for this composer fiercely guarded his privacy all his life.Still, the opera reveals insights into the way he lived and thebeliefs he held.
Verdi: A Man of the Nineteenth CenturyBorn in 1813, Giuseppe Verdi was the son of tavern
keepers who had a small bar and grocery in the countrysouth of Milan. With his musical talent recognized early, hestudied with a local priest and was appointed as the paidorganist of his parish church when he was only ten. Privatelessons in Milan followed, and after them he emerged as animportant young composer in 1839, the year his first operawas produced in famed Teatro alla Scala. In 1842 hecomposed Nabucco, his first big hit. After that, as he said,he never had to look for work again.
The Creation of Don Carlo Don Carlo was undertaken in 1865, when the Paris
Opéra asked Verdi to compose a new work. ChoosingFriedrich Schiller’s Don Carlos as one source, he also turnedto Filippo II, a drama by Vittorio Alfieri, the great Italianplaywright and patriot. Verdi certainly knew that play, forhe had read Alfieri’s works as a teenager and had written acantata based on one of Alfieri’s plays. Not surprisingly,Verdi was also offered a libretto of the story of Philip II andElisabetta of Valois in 1849. Written by his Venetianlibrettist and friend, Francesco Maria Piave, this was calledElisabetta di Valois; but Verdi did not use it as a source atthat time. In fact, his career took another turn, for in the1850s he was composing wildly popular works such asRigoletto, Il Trovatore, and La Traviata.
The world premiere of Don Carlo took place at theParis Opéra on March 11, 1867; and it was followedby the composer’s last operas, Aida, Otello, andFalstaff. In the course of his 87 years he wrote 28operas, a Requiem Mass, and other compositions;and he died in 1901.
Verdi’s Political CareerIn 1859 Verdi was seen as a voice for
progressive and liberal politics in Italy, so he waselected as a Deputy to the local legislature, theAssembly of the Parma Provinces, and was chosento meet personally with Victor Emanuel II, the kingof Italy, and give him the results of the election thattruly launched the unification of that country. Later
Verdi was elected to a much more important office as aDeputy to the First Parliament of Italy, and in his later yearshe was named Senator for Life. Not surprisingly, much ofhis music is considered within this historical context; and itis no accident that Don Carlo is in part a drama of politics:the conflict between the Church and the State.
Other basic themes of Don Carlo are family strife, grief, patriotism, and loyalty, all of which Verdi understood verywell. He composed one opera after another in the 1840sand eventually became a real celebrity of the 1800s.
That was a century critical to all Italians, the years whenthey finally won independence and created Italy as a nation. In this turbulent time Verdi was twice elected to politicaloffice and thus became a national political figure, somethingthat cannot be said of any other composer; so he was trulyunique. It is no exaggeration, then, to say that his life-experience made it possible for him to create this opera, awork with a perfect balance of personal and political issues. For all these reasons, then, Don Carlo can not beconsidered just "entertainment." Instead, it is the mosttroubling, serious, and profound work imaginable.
Mary Jane Phillips-Matz, Co-Founder of the American Institute for Verdi Studies at New York University, is a published
author of biographies on Giacomo Puccini and Giuseppe Verdi.

Why Donate to?
A professional cast of top artists, a full-scale livesymphony orchestra, authentic costumes, propsand original sets – with the multi-facetedproduction elements involving hundreds ofartists and working crews, opera is the mostexpensive of the performing arts to produce. Anon-profit organization, Hawaii Opera Theatre, isproud to have a strong base of support throughticket sales. However, even with the popularityof our productions, ticket revenues only coverabout 40% of the annual operating expenses – a typical challenge for opera companiesnationwide. Monetary donations to HOTprovide much-needed dollars to close the gapbetween costs and revenue.
HOT supporters can feel confident in knowingtheir contribution, a valuable investment inHawaii’s arts community, is responsibly managedthrough sound fiscal leadership. HOT hasearned a coveted 4-star rating from America’stop non-profit evaluator, Charity Navigator. This award recognizes charities with strongfinancial stewardship.
Contributions to HOT impact the community inmany ways:
Through HOT, children share in the joy ofthe performing arts experience. HOT’snationally-recognized education outreachprograms reach more than 25,000 studentsthroughout the islands annually.
The professional musicians of the HonoluluSymphony Orchestra are guaranteedcontracted performances in the BlaisdellConcert Hall with HOT for up to ten weekseach year. HOT’s Grand Opera and SummerSeason productions employ Hawaii’s valuableprofessional musicians.
Talented local opera artists can embracetheir futures. We believe in the cultivation andnurturing of young artists through our Mae Z.Orvis Opera Studio programs. Several studioalumni have grown into professional singers onnational and international stages.
The community. HOT supports Hawaii’seconomy by utilizing talented local resources –from the carpenters in the scene shop to youngsingers in the educational outreach programs.
